We've been asked by the team at Samsung to find 20 (v lucky) MNers to try out its latest handset - the Galaxy S4 Active and to add feedback on Mumsnet.

Samsung says "We think this new handset would be great for parents. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is specifically designed to handle all aspects of modern family life - including

~ the great outdoors - with a fully sealed design that provides great protection from dust and water - you can even use the device to shoot photos and video underwater, with your results optimised by the new Aqua Mode.

~ everyday family life - we'd love you to report back on how the handset withstands your general day to day life with a child we'll be asking testers to 'allow' it to be dropped on the floor, 'eaten' by your LOs, and even 'accidentally' dropped in the bath/ (clean) loo to demonstrate how well it copes with modern family life.

~ looks and functionality - the Galaxy S4 Active also shares the Galaxy S4s slick design and useful smart services, so you can enjoy the same great style and convenience"

Full tech spec here

This new handset will be supplied unlocked for use on any network (just insert your sim) - the costs of calls/ texts/ data must be borne by testers. The handset retails for c£400 Grin.

If you're selected to take part you'll be asked to try out the handset (including some challenges!) and to add feedback at least twice on Mumsnet - we'll be looking for first impressions as well as some follow up feedback after a couple of weeks.

We'll also need you to add a review to the MN smartphones review pages
and on the Samsung pages

If you'd like to take part and can commit to adding feedback as above please add your details here

We'll be in touch with those selected asap

thanks and good luck

On phone in the bath. This is the pinnacle of technology as far as I'm concerned. That and being able to type by swooshing my finger around.

I might never get out Grin

I have been playing with mine today and have discovered how to make it take a photo by saying 'smile' or 'cheese'. I can't get the head tilting thing to work, though.

alemci · 06/11/2013 09:41

also I have linked it to my home wifi. Does it automatically link to wifi when you are out and about or do you have to do something in the settings to enable it.

Does anyone know how you put off the push notifications for example of facebook-does that have to be managed within the individual app or within the phone settings -either way I can't find it !

Magenta
Settings
More
Application Manager
Think you have do do each application that has a notification seperately I'm afraid.

I have googled tons for this phone - if in doubt google your problem and "S4" and you will get you answer!

Mine now has a case and screen protector. Doesn't look or feel quite so beautiful now.

Suppose I'll get used to it.

Report
Indith · 06/11/2013 14:13

I have a case now, one of those flexible ones over the back. I have a fancy screen Knight screen protector but not put it on as I'm scared of making the screen feel less nice.

overwise I think I'm fairly set up. Need to play with more functions for fun, can't see myself using voice command stuff but shall play for fun.

I still don't understand about the wifi thing when you are out and about. Should you just be able to link up to it or do you have to turn something on. At the moment I don't think it works if I am not within reach of my own wifi

I have connected it to my wifi at home but have never had this sort of phone before. Is it like 3G?

Report
ShatnersBassoon · 06/11/2013 15:44

You'd have to be within the range of an open wifi signal. I use my 3G when I'm out of the house, my mobile internet. I have unlimited data allowance on my contract, so not a problem for me.

I sometimes use Wi-Fi hotspots when I'm out, like in John Lewis, but only because it's faster than my mobile internet. You have to sign in to these, and the phone will tell you if you're in range of Wi-Fi.

Alemci - not sure about this phone, but presume it works same as my last. You have to let it know about Wifi networks. Set it up at home and then when out and about search for nearby networks (say if you're in a coffee shop that has free Wifi) to join (sometimes with a password). Otherwise phone will give you 3g (if available)

mine connects to my home wifi and when I'm at uni automatically connects to uni wifi as I've put the password in. When out and about if you use internet then it uses mobile data which you have to pay for. I have a certain amount I can use on my contact, above that would appear on my bill. If you go to a cafe or somewhere with free wifi you can tell your phone to connect, it should automatically tell you that there are networks available. usually one you've used a network once the phone will automatically connect to it once you are in range so you don't have to tell it to connect in places you regularly go to.

I think! Grin

I can't get the palm motion screen capture thing to work -I look a bit of a wally waving frantically at my phone!

Report
MoogDroog · 06/11/2013 21:50

Have you got palm motion turned on Magenta? If you have, you just swipe the side of your hand from right to left, touching the screen.

Sad Cherry. I have been entering the comps for years too and not a sausage, I think with the insight thing it is probably just luck of the draw whether you fit the criteria of what the product testers are looking for -Age, age of dc's , location etc?
Hope it is your turn soon .

I like it too however my two year old says 'cheeeeeese' before I am ready and we end up with her taking the photo!
Lot of fun!
I am also enjoying being woken up by my 'walk through the forest' alarm which is much more pleasant than my normal shrill beeping!

I just had an ancient old lg phone before so everything was very basic but loved my dated ipod which I used a lot for taking quick snaps, email, viber etc -I am getting used to the Samsung now though and am getting quite attatched to it.
Downloaded my Tesco groceries app and a few others, anyone used the S health yet ? If this phone can make me thinner too that is even better ;)

Report
Indith · 07/11/2013 12:07

oooh tesco app, I should try that. The health one sorry of seems like a decent idea but I might then feel like I have to do exercise. .........
