This thread is for the 8 Mumsnetters who are taking part in the extended test-drive of the new Toyota RAV4.
Four testers and their families will also be making a video of their test drive - so look out for these on Toyota's page on Mumsnet soon.

Below are some questions for you to answer over the course of the test drive - please don't worry about answering all of them straight away, some may be more relevant after you've had the car for a week or so.

We'd like you to post updates on this thread at least twice a week - more if you'd like! We'd love to know what you and your family thought about the Toyota RAV4 as well as your stories from the Route125 adventure (or your own family adventure) you're going on and any other comments you may have.

Test-drive questions
Which model of the RAV4 are you test-driving?
What were your/your partner's first impressions of the car?
What do the children think of it?
How did you find driving a 4x4? Is it a comfortable ride? How does it differ from your usual car?
What's the boot space and legroom for passengers like?
What do you think about the features of the car? E.g Power back door, rear-view camera, cruise control etc.
Were these features what you expected the RAV4 to have or have you found any unexpected extras?
Are there any other features you'd like the car to have?
Has testing this car made you more or less likely to buy a Toyota in future?
Has testing this car changed your perception of Toyota cars at all? If so, how?
What one thing do you like best about it?
What one thing would you change about it?

Route125 adventures
We'd also like to know which Route125 adventures you and your family went on (or are planning to go on).
What did your children think of the adventure?
Were you already aware of the place you went to or was it totally new to you?
Do you think you'll be likely to try any of the other Route125 adventures or not? If so, which ones?

For those of you not taking part in the extended test drive, please take a look at the Route125 website and let us know which adventures you and your family would like to try. Have you already been on any of the adventures mentioned? If so please share your experiences with us.
If you haven't yet managed to try a Route125 adventure, why not get your family involved in one this summer! Let us know which one(s) you're going to try and come back to this thread to tell us all about it. If there isn't a suggested adventure near you what places would you recommend adding to Route125?
Please share your adventure stories on this thread. We'd also love it if you could upload any pictures of you and your family enjoying an adventure with Route125 or your own family adventure.

Everyone who shares their comments on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Love2Shop voucher

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Pretty I have a vw touran so prob the same size car wise. But it's the height that helps as you can see everything.
Dp drives a Renault megane and he loved it no problems adapting at all.
Enjoy it , it really is a fabulous car.

I am picking mine up tomorrow, and am really looking forward to driving around in a nice new car for the next two weeks!

Prettyfly1, you'll be fine. I have a smallish car and had no problem getting used to the RAV.

I switched mine to manual for a bit today. It's a bit weird changing gear with no clutch. I couldn't see the point really.

I wonder which MNer is getting 'mine' tomorrow? I'm dropping it off at Woodford Green.

I think I am going to miss the automatic boot the most!

We dropped ours off this afternoon after the obligatory trip to Ikea. It was really sad and getting back into the Civic really highlighted that we're making the right decision in getting something bigger. In fact at this very moment my husband is pricing up insurance on the Rav and Hyundai and Honda equivalents, which we're planning to test drive over this coming week! ;)

Hope the Mumsnetter picking it up tomorrow morning (we're in Bristol) has as much fun as we did with it! :)

MmeGuillotine I may have your car! I'm picking it up later from Bristol. It's the Rav Icon automatic, can't wait!

It has gone, I miss it more than I thought I would.

To make matters worse, I had to drive away from the dealership in a Ford Fiesta. It was like being in a roller skate. (A tree fell on dh's car and this is the tin can they gave him while it's being repaired)

I had a bit of trouble adjusting to a manual again and I miss being up high.

Waaaa! I'd definitely buy a Rav if it weren't for the fuel economy.

Pic is my eldest with the car.

Which model of the RAV4 are you test-driving?

We test drove the Rav 4 Icon automatic.

What were your/your partner's first impressions of the car?

I thought it looked huge compared to our usual car (a Honda Civic) and that it sounded like a taxi! My husband also thought it looked big and was wary about how it would handle as he was used to smaller cars. He was also struck by how noisy it is.

What do the children think of it?

The children fell in love with it and were very sad when we had to give it back again! They looked really comfortable in the back and had loads of space - they also liked being able to climb up into it.

How did you find driving a 4x4? Is it a comfortable ride? How does it differ from your usual car?

I thought the driver's seat could have had more lumber support as my back ached during the longer drives. Other than that the driving position was good and I liked being able to see up and over other vehicles. It felt very safe, even when tackling slippery mountain roads! Compared to my usual car it was much higher up so had better visibility but was as quick and not at all as sluggish as I was expecting.

What's the boot space and legroom for passengers like?

There was great boot space with plenty of room for everything you could possibly need to take anywhere and more besides. There was also brilliant legroom for passengers with plenty to spare.

What do you think about the features of the car? E.g Power back door, rear-view camera, cruise control etc.

I loved the power back door and found it really handy, which surprised me as I originally thought that it would be a bit superfluous and gimmicky. It was great though. The rear view camera turned out to be absolutely essential and I will REALLY miss it now. The cruise control was much the same as usual and not massively exciting. I also really liked the bluetooth link up to our phones so we could sync our music.

Were these features what you expected the RAV4 to have or have you found any unexpected extras?

I wasn't expecting the power back door as I thought this was a higher spec feature but I was anticipating the other features as we were already considering buying a Rav4 and had read up about it beforehand!

Are there any other features you'd like the car to have?

I'd really like front parking sensors as well! Otherwise it had pretty much everything we could want.

Has testing this car made you more or less likely to buy a Toyota in future?

Definitely more likely. We'd actually ruled it out while car hunting but it's now on our short list of three along with the Honda and Hyundai equivalents so that's quite a result. Unfortunately the other two manufacturers probably won't let us borrow cars for a fortnight as well so we can properly compare but it's definitely confirmed that it's about time we upgraded to something of this type as we clearly need the extra room and swanky features that it offers.

Has testing this car changed your perception of Toyota cars at all? If so, how?

I always knew that they were good cars so it really just confirmed me in that opinion.

What one thing do you like best about it?

I think the most impressive thing was the amount of space inside and how comfortable it was even when fully loaded with everything but the kitchen sink on the way back from holiday!

What one thing would you change about it?

I would change the sat-nav to make it less clunky as it had a habit of resetting itself when I turned the engine on. I would also move the Eco and Sport buttons to make them easier to locate while driving and I thought the multi drive gear box was a bit gimmicky. Oh and the reflection of light hitting the chrome trim on top of the glovebox occasionally blinded me while driving! Otherwise it was brilliant. :)

Thanks so much Toyota and Mumsnet for the opportunity to give it a whirl! We had so much fun! :)

(Compiled by my husband and me!)

Which model of the RAV4 are you test-driving?

We tested the Rav4 invincible manual

What were your/your partner's first impressions of the car?

I wasn't sure of the colour but that did grow on me. It seemed quite simple to follow the instructions of the salesman. The boot space immediately impressed me. Dp said it felt big as he drives a megane. He also felt the back window seemed to small.

What do the children think of it?

They loved it. They thought the seats were slippy. By far the best feature for them was the automatic boot opening and closing , ds loved it as he is just a little to small to comfortably close my boot but it wasnt a problem in this. They also loved being higher up dd2 actually said it was 'awesome' after she realised there were electric windows in the back.

How did you find driving a 4x4? Is it a comfortable ride? How does it differ from your usual car?

I absolutely loved driving a 4x4 and would love to have tried it out in the bad snow we have here. Our house is inaccesible to any car other than a 4x4 for a couple of months a year and this is one of the reasons we are considering exchancing for a 4x4. I drive a vw touran 7 seater. I had as much room in the boot as my current car which is pretty impressive given that is a 7 seater. It was extremely comfortable and i was very impressed being able to electronically adjust my seat for comfort. Despite me driving a pretty big car already i loved the height provided by the rav.

What's the boot space and legroom for passengers like?

As already mentioned the boot space was great and there is plenty of legroom for all passengers.

What do you think about the features of the car? E.g Power back door, rear-view camera, cruise control etc.

I loved the power back door as did everyone else. The cruise control is something i already have so whilst useful it wasnt too impressive. The rear view camera really took some getting used to but i did eventually stop looking over my shoulder at the end of the two weeks. In fact i really missed it today when i looked at my dashboard in my car when i was reversing ;)

Were these features what you expected the RAV4 to have or have you found any unexpected extras?

Yes i did expect the features as it is a high end spec of the car.

Are there any other features you'd like the car to have?

A temperature display (it could have been one of the functions but i couldnt find it)

Has testing this car made you more or less likely to buy a Toyota in future?

More , whilst i always thought Toyotas were good cars i have always stuck to driving vw's and this has made me seriously contemplate buying a toyota in the future.

Has testing this car changed your perception of Toyota cars at all? If so, how?

The sporty element was quite surprising as they did always seem to be reliable , safe cars but this was definately more edgy and impressive.

What one thing do you like best about it?

Safety , the whole feeling of being high up , the large wing mirrors and the rear view camera all meant you had exceptional vision of everything and it made you feel safer as a result.

What one thing would you change about it?

Have a Sat Nav installed as standard (we really missed this element of the car) It just didnt feel quite as sleek having our clumsy old sat nav in the window.

Can we just say thankyou for giving us this opportunity to enjoy test driving the car. If we were in a position to be looking at purchasing this car in this price range we wouldnt hesitate it has been an excellent car and loved by all the family. Thankyou mumsnet and Toyota.

Well, we collected the car this afternoon and we love it! A few niggles but overall very impressed.

We are testing the invincible, on collecting the car we were disappointed to find out that its only a 2wd car not the awd as expected, dh was going to put it through its paces off road.

The sat nav isn't working which given the spec of the car is a bit of a let down. We've planned a couple of trips over the next couple of weeks and need a sat nav so will have to now borrow one.

We are unable to get 3 car seats across the back seat - this means our 5yr old will have to travel up front and either me of dh in the back. Not ideal for a family car.

However we love.....
The Bluetooth hands free etc, very user friendly.

The auto boot - very handy.

Keyless entry - again very handy when sorting 3 children under the age of 5!

The amout of boot space is fantastic, the underneath storage a real bonus.

We are planning a trip to the coast tomorrow with all 3 dc in tow so we'll see how we go Grin

We are test driving it and loving it. The boot is massive. It is really responsive and is a bit like driving a tank. MIL struggled to get in it as she is short :)

Which model of the RAV4 are you test-driving?

We tested the RAV4 Invincible automatic

What were your/your partner's first impressions of the car?

It's a lovely looking car and very spacious. It's very quiet and nippy for a diesel. Lots of gadgets and nice features.

What do the children think of it?

They loved it and found it really comfortable.

How did you find driving a 4x4? Is it a comfortable ride? How does it differ from your usual car?

Easy peasy to drive and manoeuvre. Extremely comfortable, even for my dh who has a prolapsed disc. Love the electronic seat adjustment. It's high up! I love this.

What's the boot space and legroom for passengers like?

Excellent legroom and adequate boot space. Not as good in the boot as dh's estate, but it was fine.

What do you think about the features of the car? E.g Power back door, rear-view camera, cruise control etc.

I really loved the powered rear door and after I was used to it, found the rear view camera so useful. I forgot to try the cruise control Blush. Keyless ignition is a nice gimmick, but I can't see the benefit. Duel air is fabulous - we never stop squabbling about the heat/cold in the car.

Were these features what you expected the RAV4 to have or have you found any unexpected extras?

I had no expectations of snazzy features and was impressed with the spec of the car. I loved the automatic windscreen wipers and lights and the sync feature with my i-phone.

Are there any other features you'd like the car to have?

The car made me so lazy, I found myself expecting front parking sensors too.

Has testing this car made you more or less likely to buy a Toyota in future?

Definitely more likely. In fact, had we not been in a hurry for another appointment today, we would have been doing some sums with the dealership manager. Much as I would love the car we had - the fuel economy would put me off.

Has testing this car changed your perception of Toyota cars at all? If so, how?

I have always had a high opinion of Toyota. My dh's first 'grown up' car when we got married was a Toyota Carina.

What one thing do you like best about it?

I like being up high and I loved the fact it was automatic. Other road users treat you better if you're in a bigger car.

What one thing would you change about it?

The seat belt alarm was a bit ott. I couldn't remove my belt to park without it going into overdrive. The air conditioning smelt like an old dishcloth - no idea why.

Getting back into my Honda Civic today was depressing; its days are numbered!

Thanks SO much MN and Toyota for this opportunity. I have enjoyed every drive, short or long in 'my' RAV over the last 2 weeks.

Snala think you have the car we had.
The dealer told us it was awd when we collected it ? Is it not ?
I agree the sat nav not being installed is a let down.
Thats interesting about the 3 car seats , did you find it hard locating the middle seat belt holder , took us a few minutes before we could leave the forecourt looking for it.
I only have 2 in booster seats now and one without so i couldnt really test the 3 car seats. It looked like it may fit 3 booster seats across at a push so thats really interesting for those with 3 normal size car seats.

Report
snala · 17/08/2013 21:22

Yes, that sounds like the same car. Leeds dealership?
We are going to try the seats in different positions tomorrow and see if we can make it work, the grandparents have slightly smaller high back boosters so we might have a play with those too.
We have an infant carrier and two high back boosters to get in, however it might work with a cushion booster in the middle ( not great tho for a 5 yr old).

Yes to the seat belt buckle being a bit of a pain tho!

Report
snala · 17/08/2013 21:36

Sorry, just re read your post. No, it's not awd !! Shock

Apparently you should be as to switch from 2/awd with a button to the left of the steering wheel but the button is blanked out, we phoned the dealer who confirmed it must be the 2wd model.

This also means its the 2.0 model rather than a 2.2 with more guts. Still, we'll see how we go. I think I can live with that Wink

Report
Lilyloo · 17/08/2013 22:17

Well spotted then as we just presumed the dealer was right when dp asked him. Dp said it was a different dealer when we dropped it off so he obviously knows.
Cant say it made any difference i guess as we didnt do any rallying with it. The booklet is in the glove box so that would confirm it.

Good luck with the car seats , the problem is the middle seat isnt a full seat so it will be difficult to accomodate 3 car seats. This was such a big part of me choosing my car when my 3 were young and all in car seats not as important now.

johnnyDrivingaShinyCar · 18/08/2013 09:34

Which model of the RAV4 are you test-driving?
Icon 2.2 manual diesel

What were your/your partner's first impressions of the car?
Wow-it's big.

What do the children think of it?
My DS is 2.5 and literally ran around inside when we picked it up. He also loved all the buttons. He dubbed it the "new shiny car" and generally seemed to love it. He also fell asleep within 5 minutes of every journey Shock

How did you find driving a 4x4? Is it a comfortable ride? How does it differ from your usual car?
I really enjoyed driving it and it was far easier to drive than I expected given its size. The ride was generally very comfortable but at times the suspension seemed a bit stiff and rocky on bumpier roads and it took a few days to adjust-I felt travel sick after long drives for the first few days which was very unusual for me this was gone by day three, I am pregnant though. It drives a million times better than my old Renault Megane. It is really responsive and I found it plenty powerful for every situation we were in. I found it made driving much more comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable than my normal car (but my car is pretty rubbish now). I also thought the gearbox was brilliant, I loved how solid it felt when putting it into gear and it was very smooth.

What's the boot space and legroom for passengers like?
There is acres of space for passengers and in the boot. We didn't ever carry much in the boot but had our medium sized pushchair in there and could still fit in full shops. The under mat storage in the boot and netting are both handy features.

What do you think about the features of the car? E.g Power back door, rear-view camera, cruise control etc.
LOVED the power back door-I could pick up all grocery bags and close the door without putting them all own-brilliant. Reversing camera is helpful but I often forgot to use it. I found the dual climate control fab as like many couples we fight over the heat/air con s this was brilliant. My favourite thing though was the DAB radio.

Were these features what you expected the RAV4 to have or have you found any unexpected extras?
Um, no I think most of these are quite common on new cars.

Are there any other features you'd like the car to have?
Nope, I think it had all we need. I would've liked electric, heated seats but can obviously live without these.

Has testing this car made you more or less likely to buy a Toyota in future?
Definitely more likely. I would consider a Rav4 but think a Verso might be more likely as would like 7 seats. I loved how solid and safe the car felt.

Has testing this car changed your perception of Toyota cars at all? If so, how?
I already had quite a positive view of Toyotas-my parents and DB walked away from a head-on collision over 10 years ago in their then new Toyota so I know they're very safe and good quality cars.

What one thing do you like best about it?
Driving position and visibility were great.

What one thing would you change about it?
Not much, maybe a 7 seat version.

Also wanted to say that the dealership - Minories Wearside Toyota in Sunderland -were fantastic and very helpful. They gave us a full tank of diesel when we picked up the Rav4 and washed my car before we picked it back up. We'll definitely go back there when we're ready to buy.

We picked up our car yesterday, and our first impression is that we like it very much.

We spoke to Joe, a very friendly man at the dealership, and drove home, just over an hour's drive away.

The driver's seat was very comfortable and the visibility was excellent. The windscreen was huge and so were the wing mirrors. The reversing camera was great, but it takes a bit of getting used to. I don't think there is a reversing alarm, which I have at the moment, so I am reversing very carefully. There may be one, but it could be switched off, I will check the manual!

It's very nice to drive, very smooth, plenty of power, and very easy and comfortable.

My teenage daughters loved the back seat, and said there was plenty of room. They loved fiddling with the bluetooth, sat nav and radio. It was very easy to set up my phone with the bluetooth device.

My only gripe at the moment is that although I am just about high enough on the driver's seat (I would like it to go a little higher) I feel very low down in the passenger seat as this doesn't adjust up and down.

I would like to drive it some more before I answer the questions above.

Finally got a chance to do a review!

We have had the RAV4 invincible since Saturday and it's lovely! Big,spacious and packed with Gadgets. We have been for a shop, to the woods for a hike and dragged some bits to the skip and it easily handles everything.

I had fun yesterday - we had my stepson for the day and couldnt find the lap belt - there isnt one - its a proper belt that pulls down from the roof Blush.

DH loves the fact you can guage how well you are driving and the rear parking camera is pretty ace. I am struggling slightly with it, I have a KA normally so although it is easy to manouvre it is a big jump - a suicidal cyclist caused some fun yesterday when I wasnt sure about overtaking and he veered into the middle of a country road (definitely hoping that the kids dont repeat the word I used then!) but that is my driving - the car itself handles like an absolute dream and I can see that for school runs, although it is big, it isnt silly so could probably do it quite sensibly - it is certainly very economical!

My absolute favourite thing - mad cyclists aside, is that unlike in the KA people GIVE ME MY RIGHT OF WAY. Normally I get a look of "yeah, in that car you will wait, whether its your right or not", in the RAV not even buses cut me up - LUSH!

We are planning a getaway at the weekend so will put another update with packing plans and how it goes!
