We aren't official testers but curiosity got the better of us, so we promised the DCs we'd try them anyway. Have to say I was somewhat taken back by the cost of £4.00 for a box in Sainsbury's (yes, it was two for £5.00 but won't buy doubles of such things until I'm assured that they will be a hit!) - even the check-out lady did a double-take!
I think that they are a novel concept, but as one of the other posters pointed out the novelty would probably wear off quite quickly - certainly at £4.00 per box it would wear off after the first try from a budgeting adult's point of view! Loved the use of the traditional Cadbury's colours for the box but less keen on the unorthodox use of browns for the foil wrappings? Why would you? Anyway in their current first season they are something a bit different on Easter Egg Row and as such stand out!
We tried the ones with the cream-coloured mousse. Would have preferred the chocolate mousse ones but there were none left in stock.
DD (7) put hers in a standard egg cup but it was rather swamped. The 'eggs' are really quite diddy! She did like the idea that it was the same approach as eating a dippy egg, including slicing the top off with the little spoon, but she didn't find it very easy to do (partly because the egg scarcely peeped out over the op of the egg-cup) so had to be helped. She said she found it rather sugary tasting but it didn't stop her from tucking in and then announcing that it had been 'scrummy'.
DS (12) was presented with his in the same way but just unwrapped it and ate it in two bites...he couldn't be doing with all the 'let's pretend' novelty of it! He enjoyed it too and liked the mousse texture more than the more gloopy/sickly texture of Creme Eggs.
I'm afraid neither of the grown-ups in this house is a fan of creme eggs and for all that the mousse in these eggs looks different, can't get over the feeling that it would be just as sweet. A case of tarred by association if that makes sense. So we weren't tempted by them at all!
I think that the DCs found them a treat because they are a bit different. I can assure you that we wouldn't normally pay £4.00 for four diddy eggs (I note Creme Eggs which are the most comparable item, retail for 60p each so there is a significant mark up for a bit of additional packaging and two plastic spoons!), even as a treat. I think they would possibly make their way into part of an Easter pressie but I think there is better quality chocolate (Lindt or Milka) around for less, that they would prefer if given the choice.
I might recommend them as a fun Easter treat but only if the price came down to about £2.00 for a box! An offer of two boxes for £5.00 is just about acceptable but £4.00 most definitely isn't in these Recession-hit times.
Also, I think only providing two spoons is pretty mean. You have no idea, Cadbury's, about how fussy children can be about not sharing cutlery even with their siblings. If you had three or four children I could well envisage the treat factor being totally cancelled out by some major strop about sharing spoons!
