comparethemarket.com, one of the UK's biggest price comparison sites, has just launched a new credit card comparison service and they want to find out what you think of it. Here's what comparethemarket.com says about it: "Using our experience in the insurance comparison market, we aim to give customers a quicker, easier and more intuitive way of finding the right credit card for them - we'd like you to put our new service to the test and look forward to hearing what you think."

They want as many of you as possible to put the new service to the test and add your feedback to this thread. This is open to all UK MNers aged 18 and over. Please note that you don't have to sign up to any of the credit cards offered on the website to take part in this - it's purely for research purposes.

Some of you may have already taken part in testing this service if you are on the Mumsnet Research Panel but please feel free to add your comments about the service to this thread too.

If you'd like to take part then here's what you need to do:

  1. Visit www.comparethemarket.com/credit-cards, have a look around and compare some of the credit cards on offer, then
  2. Come back to this thread and add your feedback on what you think of the service - there are some feedback questions below to start you off but please feel free to add any other comments too.

This thread will be open until Weds 8th Feb - everyone who takes part and adds their comments below by the closing date will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get £500 of Amazon vouchers. Please note that your comments may be used (anonymously) by comparethemarket.com for marketing purposes.

Questions:
Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

It was really easy - much easier than when sorting out car insurance as there are fewer variables.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

It is useful - I like to see what is on offer and the terms available. My main reason for looking is that I would like to do a balance transfer and the most attractive part of the equation is always going to be the number of months available interest free. The great thing is that I could easily find a card available, on interest free terms long enough to mean that my balance will be paid off by the end of the promotional period.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

Overall saving seems a bit misleading unless people are only paying off minimum amounts.

I was only looking at balance transfers so can't comment on the other sliders, but it was a little frustrating waiting for the page to 'catch up' when I changed the amount (although to be honest, that could just be my server, rather than a problem with the site)

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

Yes and I will be talking with dh about it tonight.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would. It was really easy to negotiate.

Some other points...

It would be good to be able to change the way in which you view the list of cards available. The list goes down from the ?amount saved? but it might be good to have the ability to change the order to say ?lowest balance transfer fee?.

I would also like to see some sort of ?health warnings? to try and make sure that people really understand the downsides to balance transfers, such as more stark warnings if the interest rate after the promotional period will be higher than you are currently paying.

Our credit rating is good, so I can?t imagine any problems, but the actual amount available to borrow will always depend on income too ? so perhaps an additional question asking about monthly salary would be good.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating though ? I may come back with further feedback if we actually go ahead with a transfer.

Questions:
Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?
It seemed pretty straightforward to use, even for the less internet-savvy customer.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?
I don't use a credit card so it wasn't useful for me at all, but I can see how it would be useful if I was looking to make a purchase on credit or consolidate my cards/transfer my balance.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?
I thought these were really effective and very helpful.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?
I don't have a credit card and don't need one, so no.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, as I don't buy on credit. I would recommend it to someone if it came up in conversation that they were looking for a new card/better deal. however.

georgieandjess · 01/02/2012 19:34

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

It was easy to navigate. I liked that the cards were grouped by type such as cashback.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes it would be useful if I was thinking of taking out a new credit card.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

The display showing the overall savings is very good and the slider is easy to use

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

Yes if I was looking to take out a card I would have seen a suitable card

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would use it again if I was thinking of taking out a credit card

VivaLeBeaver · 01/02/2012 20:54

How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

Yes easy to understand, I wasn't sure at first why the card said 0%interest but then 12.5% APR but when I hovered over both those things a little box came up explaining the terms which was clear and useful

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

I found it useful as it clearly pointed out the different 0% interest rates, how long they were for and what the APR afterwards was.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

The overall saving display was good - I was suprised at how much I'd saved. I used the slider as I'm about to buy a car for 5k and realised how good a 0% interest credit card would be. However it would have been good if it had gone on to say what the monthly repayments for the sum selected are.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't? Yes I did.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. After the 18 month 0% interest period comes to an end I'd use this service again, especially if I was wanting to spread out a big purchase.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 01/02/2012 21:02

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

I found it easy to use, and easy to understand.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

I thought it was useful having all cards grouped together by their "features".

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find

I found the slider quite hard to use accurately on an iPad. Its slow to update and being able to input the text would have helped. I did not initially notice the ring of dots indicating it was updating, and some words would have helped. The display of overall savings was informative.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

I wasn't looking for an actual card. I suppose all the major ones are listed. You see on the car insurance adverts now that they make a point of saying they aren't on comparison websites. Might be helpful to include details of the companies you don't mention?

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would probably, since I've used it for car insurance. Although I tend to see a deal for a credit card and think that it's better than the one im on and then transfer over, rather than actively seek a new card.

juneybean · 01/02/2012 21:21

Q1. Found it very easy, liked being able to drag the sliders up to suit my needs. It was set our very clearly and didn't take me away from the page when I looked at the further details.

Q2. Yes it was good to see the different credit cards on offer which were suitable for what I needed.

Q3. I did use the slider tools, found them easy (and fun) to play with. I liked seeing how much I could potentially save, makes you more likely to sign up!

Q4. Yes, I was looking at 0% balance transfer credit cards.

Q5. On a personal note, after this credit card I'm not looking to get any more so I possibly won't use it again.

ginmakesitallok · 01/02/2012 21:22

Thanks for this - have been meaning to switch balance to an interest free credit card for ages - have now done so in 5 minutes (Hurray!)

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not? Very easy

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

yes - east to see potential savings, good to have the positive and negative points for each card

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

Slider tool was a bit of a nuisance - too slow to update. I just entered the amounts. Would be useful to have a link to typical credit card rates or an interest calculator as I don't know what interest rate we're currently on Blush

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

yes

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Don't plan to build up a balance again once this one paid off so hopefully won't use it again...

Dysgu · 01/02/2012 21:43

aagh - just typed a long response and then lost it! Will try again - as would love those vouchers but also have some useful feedback...

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

It was very easy to use. I like that all of the products are listed separately so that you can focus on what you are actually looking for rather than trawling through lots of stuff in a huge table. all very easy and clear to understand and navigate around.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

It was very useful although the first product I clicked on was not applicable for me as it was targeted for the customers of a specific bank. Again, was useful in seeing what is available and how they compare according to balance and APR.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

I like the display - makes me think I need to do something rather than simply pay out all that extra money! The slider was very easy and I liked that it affected the products listed without needing to click on enter or other buttons.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

I only have a credit card that I used for a 0% balance transfer - the original provider was taken over and I never did anything about up-dating the deal so have paid interest for the last couple of months. I had put off sorting it as I needed to get a new card - I shredded the one they sent without ever writing down the new card number Blush
Anyway, this prompted me to make a phone call - new card en route and current provider extended the 0% deal I had for another 9 months when I said why I needed a new card! All very easy - and my provider had come up as being the second best deal (and best deal relevant and open to me) so now I am feel very good and will be saving money again.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will now have to put a note in my diary to check the site again in 9 months time when my (new) 0% deal runs out.

Thank you very much - I would love to win the vouchers but am now going to save about half that amount in interest in the next 9 months.

Thank you Smile

whomovedmychocolate · 02/02/2012 08:21

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

It was easy enough but then I find credit card websites easy too. I tend to you ftyourmoney.com to look at credit card deals at the minute.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

See above. There are plenty of other places to get this info.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

Didn't use them - was only interested in cashback/points cards because I pay off in full every month.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

It suggested the cards I HAVE. However seeing the supermarket cards would have been good.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

No, they might send me a bloody meercat if I do and I cannot abide them.

muddleddaizy · 02/02/2012 09:37

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?
It was easy once I worked out that I didn't have to put any details in!

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?
It was useful as you could see clearly the different catagories rather than having to trawl through lots of information.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?
Initially it was confusing as I couldn't work out how I could save so much money - doh! The slider tool was quite frustrating because if you didn't quite get the right amount you'd have to wait until the incorrect amount had loaded first.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?
If I was looking for a creditcard I would have found something.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes as it's very simple

FreckledLeopard · 02/02/2012 10:23

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

I found it very clear to understand and liked the way the options were set out, depending on your requirements. I was really impressed by the layout and approach taken.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

Really useful, especially as you can change the variables to reflect exactly what you would save if making a transfer.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

I did use the slider tool and found it really helpful in ascertaining the best cards.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

Ironically, I got a new credit card two weeks ago at 0% for a balance transfer - it would have been great if I'd been aware of the comparethemarket.com's credit card site, as it's a lot clearer and simpler to use than moneysavingexpert which I ended up using. It's not a problem for me, as balance is small and am transferring from card that's been on 0% for a fixed time period and is about to revert to higher rate, to another 0% card, so I'm not actually saving anything per se, just avoiding paing interest.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, it's by far the best site that I've found so far.

ShatnersBassoon · 02/02/2012 10:45

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

Very easy to use and to understand.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes, it was useful. I hadn't thought about switching cards, but doing a 30 second comparison made me realise how much I could save.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

I liked the displays of overall savings. They were very clear and made it possible to view potential savings easily and quickly. The sliders were easy to use on the balance transfer comparison I made, but no easier than tapping in a couple of digits.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

I did find numerous credit cards that would offer a 0% balance transfer option.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, it was easy to use and gave easy to understand instant results. I would probably shop around myself as well, but comparethemarket.com is certainly a good first port of call.

gemma4d · 02/02/2012 12:14

Q1. easy, was very impressed that straight away I saw the category I was interested in (cashback/reward cards).

However it made no attempt at removing "points" from the description, and didn't always give enough information (how much to spend for 1 point, how many points for what reward). Points are useless: on one card you might need 1000 points for £10, on another 2500 points: both might be 1 point per pound. It would be nice if the site tried (empasis tries, I know this wouldn't always work) to figure out a % cash back. £1 per point, 1000 points for £10, voila 1% cash back.

Q2. Yes, nice to see whats on offer all in one place - no searching around

Q3. didn't use any of this (doesn't apply to me)

Q4. Several, but none better than the one I have now

Q5 Maybe. I'm happy with my card and won't change unless 1) they reduce their rewards (then I may use this site) or 2) I see a better offer advertised (then I wouldn't use the site, I'd just go with the offer).

milk · 02/02/2012 15:36
  1. Easy, as I like all the question marks next to the confusing words so I can understand what they mean.

  2. Very useful- meant I can get the most for my money :)

  3. I like it, except I wish I could change all the columns, such as have the "interest free period" to sure me the one with the most time, then see how much I'd save compared to one with a short interest free period.

  4. Yes, I found a credit card that would potentially suit my needs.

  5. Yes I would.

beachhutbetty · 02/02/2012 16:02

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

The comparison service is very easy to navigate. It's helpful grouping the types of cards together. The explanations are simple and in plain English.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes it is useful because all the deals are laid out in the same way so you can easily make a like-for-like comparison.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

The slider is logical and easy to use and the display shows useful snapshot information concerning the overall savings for each card.

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

I didn't find a credit card that suited my needs because I am perfectly happy with the one I currently use.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

However, I would use this comparison site in the future when I want to change my current card.

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not
Really easy

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?
Yes, we use our credit card for cashback, the full balance is paid every month. I checked the cashback/points cards to see whether we could get a better rate elsewhere (we can't)

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?
I didn't use this feature (see above)

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?
No, there was nothing that was better than what we currently have

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I will probably check every now and again to see whether we still have the best available deal

FourThousandHoles · 02/02/2012 16:29

May I have one of those toy meerkats please? We used comparethemarket.com for our car insurance last year, just before the offer started. I The dd's would love a meerkat.

Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

I found it easy to navigate and understand. The slidy bars were a good idea and all the info was clearly laid out.

Definitely. Was good to see exactly what the APR etc was and that you could directly compare each card without having to do the maths yourself.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

I did yes, although not really looking for one right now.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

If I was looking for a card I definitely would, as I have got into trouble with money in the past and like to know exactly what I'm getting.

Questions and Answers
Q1. How easy or difficult did you find the credit card comparison service to use? Did you find it easy to understand all of the information provided or not?

The service is easy to use. Yes it is easy to understand since you have categorized it in a nice way, guiding the customer/user as to what he can get.

Q2. Did you find the credit card comparison service useful? If so why? If not, why not?
It is useful specifically when the customer has eligibility for a range of cards and wants to decide which one will suit him.

Q3. What did you think of the display showing your overall savings for each credit card? Did you use the slider tools at the top of the comparison pages for balance transfers, purchase or combination cards? If so, how did you find them to use?

I think it is very clever to show the overall savings! Some people look for that factor when budgeting. Yes I did try the slider tools. It?s very easy to use.

If feasible I think it will be nice to have a Sorting option provided like "Your Savings? High to Low OR Low to High. If customer is deciding on basis of Savings he will get the instant picture. You can also sort on time period (Interest free period).

Q4. Did you find a credit card that suited your needs? If not, what would you have liked to see offered that wasn't?

Actually we already have one. I did not want any card. I just checked the options.
I think you are giving a lot of information, categorized it properly too. So if a person decides on basis of this information he can ideally go for a card.

Q5 Do you think you'd use comparethemarket.com's credit card comparison service again in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Simple info, tho not much on each card.
useful to have everything in one place, tho I strongly suspect not every card on the market is there, so would have to use other sites as well if looking to change.
Didn't see a slider, but then there would be no savings, as I want a cash back card.
Not looking to change at the moment.
Would use the site as a starting point to see what I might be interested in, and see what deals are likely to be available before looking for much more info else where before committing to somewhere.
Would like to be able to filter by Amex / visa / mastercard (ie exclude Amex!)
No ability to compare 2 cards next to each other if they are apart on the list.
