You may recall we recently recruited for folks to join the latest Pearson book review panel - this time for those children in KS2 (aged 7-11). We have chosen folks for this and emails have just been sent to those selected, but Pearson are very keen to also have parents (and DC) put a specific range of books to the Mumsnet test. These books are aimed at children who are struggling with their reading and who are below the 'expected' level for their age.

We are looking for 10 children - 5 aged 7-9 and 5 aged 9-11.

Pearson say "The range of books we would like you and your child to review is called 'Rapid'. The range is aimed at aimed at children aged 7-11, but who are reading at national curriculum levels 1-3c (or equiv for Scotland and NI). They may have dyslexia, or other learning difficulties; they may have English as a second language or they may just be considered behind their peers for some reason. For example, your child may attend a mainstream school but might be in a special catch up reading group working with a TA".

"The books are designed to be 'high interest' with a low reading level. This means that an 8 year old in year 3 who is struggling can been given a book they will find interesting but at a level they can read, rather than being given a year 1 reading book to catch up".

Below are some sample pages of the books:
this is national curriculum level 1a to 2c

this is national curriculum level 1c

If your child fits the bill and you'd like to try some books, please sign up below. You'll be asked to take a proper look at the pack, read the books with your child, maybe get together with a group of mums to see what they think, and then submit your review on a special review thread on Talk. Panellists will be asked to submit their reviews within 2 weeks of receiving their review packs. You must review each book pack you receive. If you want to opt out of the project you can at any stage by emailing MNHQ.

If you are selected to take part, MN will email you to let you know. We will then pass on your name, your description of your childs reading issue, age and gender of your child, and address details to Pearson for them to dispatch your books.

Each panellist will be able to keep the packs they review. Pack values are around £12 and contain up to 6 titles. As a thank you for taking part there will be a monthly prize draw (on the last day of each month) for all those who have submitted a review in that month for all KS2 titles. The prize each month will be £50 of John Lewis vouchers.

The reviews will be used by Pearson to help promote the books to other Mumsnetters - they will link to the feedback thread from the book shop pages and will feature the reviews you send in on the site. Pearson also say "we want the reviews to help us refine and improve our selection of packs for the shop, so if a particular programme is receiving rave reviews, we'll add more titles into the shop and if something isn't being received well, we'll use this feedback to refine our offering"

So if you and your child would like to take part please add your details here

The first packs will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.

thanks
MNHQ

Done. This would be amazing for dd. She try's so hard to read like her friends but struggles Sad

DawnOfTheDeementedDead · 28/10/2011 10:05

DS2 would love this - although he's 7, he's still in Year 2 so can't do it Sad

starfish71 · 28/10/2011 10:09

My DS2 would really benefit from this, hope he can join in.

haggisaggis · 28/10/2011 11:21

dd is 9 but we are in Scottish system so really no idea where she is on your NC levels. She is reading about 2 years behind peers if that helps. If these books are better than the dreadful thing she brought home this week we would be keen!

starfish71 · 28/10/2011 11:29

Forgot to mention DS2 is 7 very very behind with his reading and struggling.

sadfamily · 28/10/2011 16:30

I have entered our details. DS1 is dyslexic, behind his peers and dyspraxic as well as poss aspergers (we are going through loads of appts atm and this would cheer him up) :

ClaimedByMe · 28/10/2011 16:45

haggis what books Is she getting home? My dd is 8 and reading about 2 years behind and the books are dreadful and old!

FroOOOOOtshoOOOOOOts · 28/10/2011 17:30

Ds is 10 and still struggling to read, way behind average for his age. Anything that we can try to encourage him to read more would be brilliant. Am really quite worried how is he going to keep up when he goes to upper school next September.

TheFeministsZombieBride · 28/10/2011 20:30

I've entered our details. DD1 is 8 and has the reading age of a 5/6 year old. She gets very bored with the school reading books she's sent home with now. I've read The Magic Faraway Tree to her and I'm currently reading her The Wishing Chair. I know she would love to be able to read a book as interesting as those herself. It's knocked her confidence massively since she started in the juniors last year as she now sees how far behind everyone else she is. [hsad]

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 28/10/2011 21:07

Done it. DS is 8 and learnt to read last year. He is doing well but needs lots of help. I am dead proud of him!

hmc · 28/10/2011 21:26

I'd like to participate because dd(9) is dyslexic, but she has progressed with reading in the last year and her reading age and actual age are now commensurate with each other - so we can't now! I applaud more books that provide age appropriate and stimulating stories but at a lower reading ability - dd really loved barrington Stoke books for that reason

BOOareHaunting · 28/10/2011 21:57

Done. DS 7 has just been referred to SENCO and dyslexia/ SpLD are being discussed.

Eve · 29/10/2011 09:02

My DS 11 is dyslexic, diagnosed by ed psychologist. Always on look out for books that will interest a boy and that are achievable for him.

He's a classic case, bright in Maths/science ( level 5 in sats). But can't read or spell ( level 3 in sats).

Littlericky · 29/10/2011 11:26

I would love to participate, DD2 is 7 and currently being monitored by the school for dyslexia. Sounds perfect!

ellaballoo · 01/11/2011 19:44

we are really looking forward to taking part

mumatron · 01/11/2011 20:09

Ds is so excited about this.

He says a big thank you mnhq.
