Pearson's Book Panel - Ages 1-7 - Review thread

AnnMumsnet · 25/07/2011 09:29

You may know Mumsnet have been working with Pearson to provide some special learning-related content for you. Linked to the site is a Pearson shop where you can buy educational books for children. We invited MNers with a child aged between 1 and 7 to review the books available and this thread is for the reviews. Panellists will be sent up to 5 packs of books and reviews will continue to be added each month until the end of the year. Pearson will link to this thread from the shop.

As a thank you for taking part there will be a monthly prize draw for reviewers for all those who have submitted a review in that month. The prize each month will be £50 of John Lewis vouchers - the first draw will take place on 31 August and will be for one prize of £100 of John Lewis vouchers.

Below are the questions Pearson would like you to answer - when posting your review please add in the age of your child and please include the question as well as your response.

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?
Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?
Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?
Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?
Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?
Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?
Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?
Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent

Many thanks

silverfrog · 30/09/2011 23:39

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?

we had two packs (neither of which was a repeat!):

Phonics bug pack 2 (4 fiction books inc. Tut Tut Pup and The Bop), and
Read at home Bug Club Pink pack. they are learning to read packs (although am a bit confused, as had phonics bug pack 3 last time, so presumably these are a little easier?)

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?

the books are of a similar standard. the books that dd2 is bringing home are not pure phonics books, though - she has mostly Ginn 360 books. She likes those; the stories seem more complete, in a way. more content, and a bit more point to them, I would say.

Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?

she has (as has dd1 - aged 7, but severe ASD, so just learning to read also) mostly enjoyed them. she wasn't keen on the Lego one, or Harry and the Dinosaurs oddly (she loves the full Harry stories).

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?

the books make a nice change from the ever present Kipper! BUt there does seem to be less flow to them - the 'stories' are very loose (and it is not as though ORT have great storylines...) and both girls don't really seem to get the point of them - there is not the same beginning, middle, end with a flow of story. having said that, they are nice little books, not too intimidating for a child to start reading. dd1 has liked them more than dd2.

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?

dd2 said there were not enough flowers in the stories (Confused, and that the words were different from her school reading books (there has been a heavy emphasis on 'look' 'where' 'here' and 'help' in her school reading books over the last coulpe of weeks, and I think she was a bit lost without them!)

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?

they are good, but seem less substantial somehow. quite thin and flimsy, and not as much flow as some other phonics reading books we have at home (eg ORT songbird books). not sure I would recommned them over anything else, but I would not not recommend either.

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?

not sure it would occur to dd2 to do so.

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent

3.5. I think part of theseeming disjointed-ness is that there is no cohesive flow from one book to the next, whether in terms of charcters or the language used. to me that seems a good thing (I don't tend to read very similar books one after another all the time) but the constant repetition and familiarity of other schemes seems to help dd2 - eg the progression through the ORT or Ginn series.

norriscoleforpm · 01/10/2011 10:41

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?

We received Bug Club level 2 reading together

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?
Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?

She thoroughly enjoyed them! Both being read to and reading out loud.

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?

Lovely! Tactile, user friendly and eye catching.

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?

She says 'good - some of the best books in the world'!

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?

I expect so. In fact i intend to pass on the duplicates we were sent to a friend with a 5 year old to get their reactions.

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?

she says 'Yes, i will tell them they are really good and colourful'

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent

I would definitley say between 4 and 5.

Many thanks

Thank you Chantal. He's now read the two non-fiction texts and has enjoyed those a lot - non-fiction is his thing. He wasn't keen on the fiction texts, shall I donate those to his school? The reception class will probably make good use of them.

funnypeculiar · 02/10/2011 20:44

For ref, dd is 5yo & in Y1.

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?

Learning to read purple pack - Lego city, Cake sale goo & Basil Brush

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?

Slightly more advanced - she is on yellow level (school uses a mix of reading schemes inc Oxford Reading Tree)

Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?

She didn't jump on them to be honest - I don't think the covers captured her as much as last time. But she did enjoy the when I encouraged her to open them

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?

Not bad, but nothing special. Basil B not a character she knows, and Lego City was a bit plonky in the text, although we loved the pictures!

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?

She says they were "brilliant" especially the BB & the Cake sale goo which she thought were funny.

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?

Um, not especially. Fine but nothing special. I can imagine a lego obsessive might get more out of the lego one than we did

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?

Don't think she would, sorry!

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent.

3/5

funnypeculiar · 02/10/2011 20:45

PS I am passing our duplicate selection (inc the wonderful Zip & Zap, which still makes dd giggle) onto school.

SeenButNotHeard · 03/10/2011 18:35

I received an email, but no replacement books yet...

happygilmore · 04/10/2011 13:48

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?

We had the two Miriam Stoppard books.

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?

n/a

Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?

She liked the pictures in the books, but much prefers the first books we were sent, first opposites and colours. These books are a bit young for her (she is 16 months) and in my opinion don't have that much content.

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?

I think they're more aimed at parents. And if I'm brutally honest (sorry!) I found them a bit patronising, the CD and book for the talking book really stress how you need to talk to your children etc etc and whilst I appreciate that some people need to be told to do that sort of thing, I don't think most do. I also think the developmental guide could be quite upsetting for some parents, it says at 15 months all children (whilst offering a disclaimer about differing development times) should be talking in two word phrases, well my DD isn't! Maybe I should have bought the book before now and she would be! Grin

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?

She seemed to like the textures book most, and did like looking at the pictures in both. The nursery rhymes on the CD she wasn't very interested in, which is not like her as she normally adores music. I think it was because they were quite 'dry', Miriam Stoppard obviously believes that all words should be clearly intonated and seems to have a problem with 'motherese' (or at least that's the impression I get). DD much prefers exaggerated singing, rather than the way the nursery rhymes were delivered on the CD. I think the content was also more aimed at parents overall than children.

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?

Perhaps, but I don't think they were great value. Something like the "That's not my.." set of books would capture children's attention more I think.

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?

n/a too young!

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent

2 (sorry!)

Fillybuster · 04/10/2011 13:50

Note for Pearson (if you're looking!) - I had an email from you but have not received any replacement books....yet....

SilveryMoon · 05/10/2011 19:38

Sorry that it has taken me so long to post my review..........
Firstly though, I would like to say, AnnMumsnet I posted a while back to say that I also had received some books that I had got in round 1. Pearson's have not contacted me, but today I received another pack of books which again, are a repeat of the phonics books I received in round 1.

Now my review for round 2:
Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?
A1 We received Phonics Phase 2 Set 5. These are a "learning to read" set.

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?
A2) My son brings home Oxford Reading Tree books. He is on the very first stage, the books without words. My son really enjoys these books and they seem to be doing wonders for his story-telling confidence. He is not enjoying the books from Pearsons Sad

Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?
No. In his words, he says "don't want to read that book. That book is rubbish"

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?
My view, is the books are ok. I do feel that the books without words are better because they help more to build the child's confidence in story-telling, allowing them to make their own interpretations of the story. The Pearsons books put abit more pressure on my son than I would personally choose.

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?
He was excited when the package arrived, he couldn't wait to open it. He was excited when he saw they were books and he wanted to read them, but once we sat down he changed his mind. I tried a number of times to sit with him and look at the books, but he is uninterested. He has not chosen any of them from his bookshelf at reading time at home either.

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?
I would recommend these books to friends. I do think that some children will thoroughly enjoy them, and maybe when my son moves onto the next level of reading and is recognising more letters and sounds, he will enjoy them. I hope so anyway.

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?
He is not really old enough to recommend books to his friends.

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent
I give the books a rating 2/3. Only because my son is not really into them so I find it hard to be overly praising of them.

Moodykat · 05/10/2011 21:33

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?
Not sure, we had the DK lift the flap books

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?
N/A

Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?
He likes lifting the flap and once I had read it to him once he then sat reading it to himself "Baby can't find his boat..." etc!

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?
I thought it was good for him to look at by himself but he prefers to have stories when I read to him.

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?
As I said above, he likes them!

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?
I showed them to my 15 month old niece the other day and she loved them so yes, the people with younger children.

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?
I think he would show them to his friends, yes.

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent
4 stars as for the right age group, they are lovely books and the concept is great! Trouble is, as with the previous pack, I think they are a little young for DS who is very nearly 3 now!

MiraNova · 05/10/2011 22:24

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?

We had Phonics bug pack books - (Tut Tut Pup and The Bop), Lego City, Harry & the Dinosaurs. We also got a duplicate set of Carol Vorderman's 'Maths made easy' books - which are great.

Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?

DS mainly brings home ORT books, but occasionally brings home different ones. School policy is that they all start on the picture (ie no words) books - and we are reading those still. He is a good reader and can comfortably read ORT 5, so waiting to see which level they will decide to put him on once they've assessed him.

Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?

Yes he does. He can read them easily, so would benefit from harder books - but despite that he does love them. I like the practice the sounds bit at the front of the 'bug' books - because I want to check that DS really does know his sounds and isn't just learning the words without knowing the phonics. The guidance notes are good, and help us get more out of the book.

Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?
I started off thinking he wouldn't enjoy them at all as he can read all of the words without hesitation, but having said that, he does really like them, and often chooses them to read out loud regardless of whether anyone is listening to him! I think they're good, and have requested a more advanced level for next time and am very keen to get those.

Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?
He liked the Lego City story, and particularly finding the people, so that was good. He loves the bit in Tut Tut Pup where Pup wees on the carpet, and laughs a lot at this every time we read it. He has seemed less keen on Harry and the Dinosaurs, although not sure why, as he has liked other Harry stories, and loves Dinosaurs.

Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?

Yes I would, although I think with this level of book that you go through them so quickly that it's often better to get them from the library or school than to buy them.

Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?

Not sure he's old enough to think of that, but if asked he would probably be keen to show them to a friend who was visiting for example.

Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent

4 - DS loves them, but they are very easy for him.

StaceyfromPearson · 06/10/2011 09:42

Don?t worry, if your review is delayed because of a delay in receiving your pack, you?ll still be entered into the prize draw!

StaceyfromPearson · 06/10/2011 09:50

Hi Fillybuster, SeenButNotHeard, WhatWouldLeoDo and MoChan, I hope you've received your book packs now? If not, please let us know by emailing [email protected] so we can look into it (if you haven't already). Likewise, if anyone else is still waiting, please get in touch too!

MoChan · 06/10/2011 11:24

Hi Stacey

Yes, thanks, we have received a pack, just yesterday. I will post a review later.

The books we were sent were much easier than the first pack we got, though, which seems odd. They are very much first readers and My DD is reading at a significantly higher level than this; Obviously, this doesn't stop me from reviewing the books altogether, and I'm of course happy to do that, but I think my reviews would be more useful if it were something I could gauge and use her reaction from. She just zipped through these in ten seconds flat and won't look at them again. I am going to get some of my friends with children at this level to have a look if I can, and see what they think, but I think my reviews might be more useful for Pearson if we're sent something a bit more her level.

Happy to continue reviewing them at any level, though! x

SeenButNotHeard · 06/10/2011 11:38

Hi Stacey, our pack arrived yesterday and looks great! Many thanks.
