Hi all

Ok this is your chance to have your say about what, in an ideal world, you'd like to happen to childcare, nurseries and pre-schools (as well as debate what's happening in the sometimes non ideal world). The Rt Hon Beverley Hughes, Minister for Children and mum of three, will be joining us for a lunchtime chat on Thursday 24th May, so bring your sarnies, get your questions ready and join us then. For those of you who have unavoidable lunchtime commitments (and letters from your mum to prove it) we'll let you post your questions in advance here. For the rest of you, we'll see you on the 24th.

Hi there
Just bumping this for anyone who wants to post an advance question ... though I can see there are quite a few already.

Looking forward to seeing everyone here on Thursday around 1pm

carriemumsnet · 24/05/2007 13:04

Hi everyone and a big welcome to Beverley Hughes MP, Minister for Children. Beverley has promised to try and get through as many of your questions as possible in the next hour. We can?t guarantee that everything will get answered, but she's going to give it a good try.

Over to you Beverley....

carriemumsnet · 24/05/2007 13:58

Just spoken with Beverley's office and she will respond on breastfeeding before signing off, so please be patient!

carriemumsnet · 24/05/2007 13:59

whoops, cross posted

carriemumsnet · 24/05/2007 14:14

Thanks Beverley and thanks everyone for joining in. An hour is obviously not long enough to cover such massive topics and big apologies to those who didn't get answers to their questions. Hopefully the fact that the questions were asked will at least be useful to Beverley's office in terms of working out what parents want.

Thanks again

MNHQ

Thanks for the sympathy Grrr - yes the next Minister may not be quite so eager to come and have lunch with us following some of those responses - but also agree that it has to be useful for the Government to hear what's bugging parents. I think we can all safely say that they should have a good idea of some of the big issues after today....

Maybe we should start another thread with "what you'd like to see the Government to do about...." just to make sure ?

carriemumsnet · 24/05/2007 14:31

of course that should read "what you'd like to see the Government do about...."

fainting from lack of food, never actually got round to that sandwich....

carriemumsnet · 24/05/2007 15:02

Hi all

I've been contacted by Beverley's office to apologise again that she didn't get round to answering all the questions and to clarify that she's Minister for Children within the education department (rather than health) which is why she focused on the education questions most and didn't come back with full answers on breastfeeding. Apparently the person we should be emailing re the Govt policy on breastfeeding is Ivan Lewis (and yes I know his biog says he's in trade and industry, I thought that was odd too, but I'm assured he's now head of breastfeeding)The email on his site is
[email protected]
and there's some info on him herewww.dh.gov.uk/en/AdvanceSearchResult/index.htm?searchTerms=ivan+l ewis

I know folks were seriously disappointed by some of the responses, but please, if we're ever to entice anyone back here to face you lot again can stay at least stay civil ?

Shall I see if Mr Lewis wants to come and chat with some friendly mums ?

Thanks
MNHQ

No Cammelia, don;t think it;s his official title, but he could earn it if he comes on here...
