We're pleased to announce that Nicky Morgan, Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities, will be joining us for a webchat on Thursday 18 December at 11.00am.

Nicky was elected for the Loughborough seat for the Conservatives in the 2010 General Election, and was appointed was appointed Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities on 15 July this year. She is married and a mother of one.

Nicky will be joining us on Thursday to discuss all things education-related, and in particular will welcome discussion of behaviour and bullying, mental health, character and careers. Of course, we will welcome questions from across the education spectrum and Nicky will reply to as many as she is able to between 11am and 12pm.

Please do join us live on Thursday, or post your questions in advance on this thread.

monkey it was nonsense wasn't it! The more I think about it the more annoyed I get. I already knew about the 1944 act and that I can withdraw my child.

I see she completely ducked the question about music education. Doesn't surprise me. :(

LottieMumofWilfJenkins · 18/12/2014 21:47

She ignored the BSL one too! Xmas Hmm

LineRunner · 18/12/2014 23:05

This is one of the most piss poor webchats ever with a Secretary of State, in my personal opinion.

threepiecesuite · 18/12/2014 23:10

Even Gove would have given more meaty answers than what we see here.

I look forward to the New Year announcement on teacher workload. It cannot come soon enough- the profession is in crisis.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 18/12/2014 23:27

She might as well not have answered my bloody Q either. Ah well GE isn't far away now!

LineRunner · 18/12/2014 23:30

I have waited a respectable length of time to say this since she left the building, but that really was a patronising shocker.

threepiecesuite · 19/12/2014 00:05

Indeed, Line.

meglet · 19/12/2014 07:17

pastsellby not very reasurring was she. Sounds like she couldn't care less for more able children Confused.

Not many teachers on here were there? Considering the volume of threads about workload etc etc & the amount of posts by teachers on here generally I would have expected more contributions from the teaching community.

I realise the webchat was within teaching times but that's why its posted early, so that those who cannot be here in real time can post their comments beforehand.

LineRunner · 19/12/2014 18:02

This is a Secretary of State with no real profile, possibly.

ravenAK · 19/12/2014 18:45

we've just told her what we think via the workload survey, Magrats.

It's a bit of a busy time for us.

She doesn't appear to have had much to say that was helpful, or even coherent.

As far as I can see, her entire raison d'etre is being NotGove, & therefore marginally less electorally toxic - I suspect the brief for the webchat was essentially 'type platitudes, Nicky, but do it slowly'.

threepiecesuite · 19/12/2014 18:59

ravenAK has it spot on.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 19/12/2014 19:37

Reckon you're right Raven. She 'spoke' like she:

a) didn't know what she was talking about
b) thinks we're all a wee bit thick and
c) couldn't be bothered.

Don't really know why she wasted hers and our time.

stripeysettee · 19/12/2014 20:56

I found the answer she gave re schools gaming targets absolutely shocking - she basically said it was fine. Incredible.

Asleeponasunbeam · 19/12/2014 21:20

I love the way she condenses primary education into teaching children to 'read, write and add up'. Add up FFS! Is that what mathematics is supposed to be reduced to?! I think we should get her to expand on that somehow.

ReallyTired · 19/12/2014 21:35

Nicky attended a lovely private school that did far more than teach it's girls to read, write and add up. Clearly she does not think peasants state primary school kids need to learn any other skills that would be essential in a high flying career. I want my children to enjoy a broad and interesting education like Nicky had.

I really don't think her webchat did anything to advance women in politics. I think a webchat with Michael gove would have been more interesting.

^this a thousand times over. Same for 99% of those in government.

Asleeponasunbeam · 20/12/2014 07:50

I want mine to as well. And I want to teach in a way to provide that education too!

LePetitMarseillais · 20/12/2014 09:20

Blimey that was poor, never seen so many questions with weak answers.

So the answers to boys not achieving is a career in coding- oh ok then.

Re PE erm the money is going in but it is still going on the same more able sporty children and team sports. The mocking, zero encouragement and dire provision for the less able continues. When are children going to be taught to get fit for fitness sake instead of the glory of the school football, hockey etc team? When is the focus going to shift from a few to all?

Complete non answer to the bored year 6 question........
