Am another fan of your performance in Love Actually, including the scene when she discovers her husband's emotional affair and is alone, but has to get it together for the children.

Lots of women post on here about similar real-life situations and are often advised to Leave the Bastard! The ending of that storyline was ambiguous: do you think she LTB?!

The only woman to have won Oscars for both acting and adapted screenplay? Or is it the only person to have won in these two categories?

Either way, that's not my question (just a bit of fawning) but my question is... you seem to have supported/adopted/fostered a young man a few years ago and I think he did very well academically. Did you have any support from Social Services and if so, how did you find that part of the experience?

I sometimes read comments on the scarcity of good roles for women once they get older (which seems to mean over 25) and wonder whether you have felt the same way.

If so, do you end up thinking, 'Bugger it, if I want to play a worthy part I'm going to have to write/direct/produce it myself'?

Can i ask why you initially were vocal in your support for Roman Polanski. I understand you later withdrew this support but I find it hard to understand why you supported him in the first place. I accept that he is a brilliant director but there is no doubt that he raped and sodomised a 13 yr old girl.

Gosh, this thread is all a bit girl crush but I'm going to join in! In our house we love all your family in the various Austen adaptations but just as much we love the magic roundabout stories by your dad. I have wonderful memories of total, crying, pant-wetting laughter with my siblings when we read them as children and now I have the same thing with my 7 yr old daughter. Whenever we need cheering up, we quote Brian: "Good thing Wendy's mouse looks stout". Anyway, thanks for the hours of brilliant entertainment. Looking forward to the Mary Poppins movie, it's such an interesting book.

I think they're together, but leading separate lives to some extent, because she can never trust him, but still loves him, and he realises his massive mistake and that he can never truly make it up to her. So they carry on, slightly sad, she goes on tours of Italian Cities with her friends and learns pottery or something at night school. He mopes around doing the telegraph crossword.

I loved Tutti Frutti and was chuffed to bits when the BBC finally released it on DVD and I could watch it again all these years later. Brilliant on-screen chemistry between you and Robbie Coltrane and just a great series all together.

Your Scottish accent was one of the most convincing I've heard on film or TV. Was that helped by having a Scottish mum, did you have a Scottish accent yourself as a wee girl or are you just very good at accents?
