To celebrate the publication of Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit, Oscar-winning actress, screenwriter and children's author Emma Thompson is joining us for a webchat on Wednesday 2 October at 8.15pm. The book is Emma's second tale about the iconic blue-coated rabbit; The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit marked the first Beatrix Potter tale to be published since 1930.

Join Emma for a webchat on Wednesday eve at 8.15 pm or post a question to her in advance on this thread.

I've had to come back to say that as much as I love you in your serious roles, Your speech in the funeral scene in Men in black 3 was amazingly funny.
And I'm paraphrasing..... Lol :D

Am another fan of your performance in Love Actually, including the scene when she discovers her husband's emotional affair and is alone, but has to get it together for the children.

Lots of women post on here about similar real-life situations and are often advised to Leave the Bastard! The ending of that storyline was ambiguous: do you think she LTB?!

Hi Emma, thanks for coming to talk to us.

I think you are fabulous Grin

I met you a couple of times when I worked for a charity you have been extremely supportive of. My wonderful driver in Ethiopia drove you the previous year (and also sang your praises).

My question is: where in the world would you most like to visit (or revisit) and why?

Emma thanks for coming to MN - I am a HUGE fan too!

I just wanted to say that scene in Love Actually "you've made a mockery of the life I lead" is amazing. Powerful stuff.

What is the most random/funniest sentence you have ever had to utter to a child? I say this having had to tell my daughter aged 2 not to lick the cat...! Confused

I hope you continue to get lots of lovely roles. I always love your films Smile

Emma Thompson. I salute you.

The only woman to have won Oscars for both acting and adapted screenplay? Or is it the only person to have won in these two categories?

Either way, that's not my question (just a bit of fawning) but my question is... you seem to have supported/adopted/fostered a young man a few years ago and I think he did very well academically. Did you have any support from Social Services and if so, how did you find that part of the experience?

Thank you.

I was going to ask a question about him too Nonno. Damn it. Will have to think of another one now.

Hello Emma. Another big fan here both of Beatrix Potter and yourself. I think Beatrix Potter has a lot to teach us. Would the global economy have crashed if everyone had read 'The Tale of Ginger and Pickles'?

Oh yes, so many brilliant roles. I would certainly like to channel your Nanny McFee from time to time. Smile

I sometimes read comments on the scarcity of good roles for women once they get older (which seems to mean over 25) and wonder whether you have felt the same way.

If so, do you end up thinking, 'Bugger it, if I want to play a worthy part I'm going to have to write/direct/produce it myself'?

Another huge fan here! You are one of my all time favourite actors.

[Feels embarrassed at asking such a trivial question Blush of such a hallowed performer but dying to know]

Whenever dh, dd and I are feeling a bit battered by life, we watch the scene from Men in Black3, where you are playing Agent O, and giving a memorial speech in honour of Agent Z (the bit where you are "paraphrasing") and we all immediately feel better!! Grin

How on earth did you learn it (or was it an inspired bit of improvisation on your part?)

Yet another huge fan. You are a truly great actor and a wonderful writer. I have enjoyed your films so much. I am so grateful for the work you do for women around the world and for being a proud and wise feminist.

My question is - what do you think is the single biggest issue facing women in the UK at the moment?

Plenty to choose from I know, but I would be interested to hear what concerns you most

Thanks

Another fan here! We often talk about your Love Actually role on here (and agree that is by far the best in the filmGrin).

No question, but please, please, please join Mumsnet, if you haven't already. We promise we won't out you.

Seems my question re last scene of LA has already been asked, love to know your opinion. (for the record I dont think she does let him come home but that they are amicable for the children's sake)
I can't miss this opportunity to say how bloody fabulous you are and I truly truly adore you - total girl crush!
My daughter has her heart set on being an actress, what would you recommend, should she go straight to drama school at 11 or 16 or wait till university ? Its a big question in our household right now as she moves schools next September. Thank you

OMG, Emma Thompson!

You are just brilliant. As is your whole family. And your sister is very funny.

Ok, enough crawly bumlicky. My question is this: would you like to come round for a cup of tea and a bun? I make lovely carrot cake and I have got a delicious squishy baby you can snuggle.

Or - which do you prefer, writing or acting?

Or - is there any particular role you have always dreamt of playing and haven't yet?

Or - what is your favourite cheese? Grin

Can i ask why you initially were vocal in your support for Roman Polanski. I understand you later withdrew this support but I find it hard to understand why you supported him in the first place. I accept that he is a brilliant director but there is no doubt that he raped and sodomised a 13 yr old girl.

Gosh, this thread is all a bit girl crush but I'm going to join in! In our house we love all your family in the various Austen adaptations but just as much we love the magic roundabout stories by your dad. I have wonderful memories of total, crying, pant-wetting laughter with my siblings when we read them as children and now I have the same thing with my 7 yr old daughter. Whenever we need cheering up, we quote Brian: "Good thing Wendy's mouse looks stout". Anyway, thanks for the hours of brilliant entertainment. Looking forward to the Mary Poppins movie, it's such an interesting book.

I think they're together, but leading separate lives to some extent, because she can never trust him, but still loves him, and he realises his massive mistake and that he can never truly make it up to her. So they carry on, slightly sad, she goes on tours of Italian Cities with her friends and learns pottery or something at night school. He mopes around doing the telegraph crossword.

Hello Emma! DD and I love Nanny McPhee, especially the line 'I did knock' which we repeat to each other frequently. Grin

How do you make time for friendships and do you find it hard to make friends outside of 'showbiz'?

Hi Emma

I loved Tutti Frutti and was chuffed to bits when the BBC finally released it on DVD and I could watch it again all these years later. Brilliant on-screen chemistry between you and Robbie Coltrane and just a great series all together.

Your Scottish accent was one of the most convincing I've heard on film or TV. Was that helped by having a Scottish mum, did you have a Scottish accent yourself as a wee girl or are you just very good at accents?

Hi Emma, I hope you're well and having a fun evening.

There's a thread on Mumsnet at the moment about kids films that make adults cry. Nanny Mcphee has been mentioned. So a) Are you proud of yourself for that, and b) Which kids films reduce you to a gibbering wreck?
