Jamie Oliver webchat, Thursday 29 August, 2.45pm

We're chuffed that Jamie Oliver is paying a return visit to Mumsnet this Thursday. His first MN webchat was back in 2010.

Jamie has a new book out, Save with Jamie: Shop Smart, Cook Clever, Waste Less (all subjects dear to MNers' hearts). It has 100 brand-new recipes designed to be accessible, reliable and, above all, affordable.

This is what Jamie says about his new book: "For years I have been telling people that if you look back through history, the best food in the world has always come from communities under massive financial pressure. But the proviso is that you MUST be able to cook! If you can't, and have no money, that is where the trouble starts. This is a cook book which, from start to finish has tasty recipes, all dedicated to great value, is a brilliant weapon to have on the shelf, and is relevant to every household. If you use this book the way it's intended, you should end up saving a wodge of cash from your wallet."

And to tie in with the book, he has a new six-part series on Channel 4 starting on Monday 2 Sept at 8pm.

Please post your question and join Jamie for a chat at 2.45pm on Thurs.

@sybilfaulty

Dear Jamie, love your books and have made most of your thirty minute meals. Brilliant ideas and loved by my children thanks.

Would you ever do Strictly? Other commitments permitting of course.

Never, but my wife would have a go.

JamieOliver · 29/08/2013 15:19

@BoffinMum

Do you like One Direction? WinkGrin

Love those boys

swallowedAfly · 29/08/2013 15:20

Grin at a kitty and sharing equipment.

also laughing my socks off at £1.38 per head, per meal being cooking on the cheap.

Trigglesx · 29/08/2013 15:20

£115 per week? Where'd that come from?

I have £50 per week total for a family of 3 and that includes all cleaners, pullups, and toiletries. And a friend of mine has an even lower budget for her groceries for same size family.

JamieOliver · 29/08/2013 15:20

[quote Titsalinabumsquash]Hi Jamie!

I'm a massive fan of yours and have been using your recipes since back in the 'Naked Chef' days. :)
I also happen to agree with a lot of things you say.

BuskersCat · 29/08/2013 15:20

You can buy tubs of spices and herbs in Tesco from their value range for 80p(ish) so you can buy one every week if you can. But they have only just started this, and the range is limited

AintNobodyGotTimeFurThat · 29/08/2013 15:21

Am :o at 1D likeage.

I preferred JLS myself.

swallowedAfly · 29/08/2013 15:21

not to mention 'ethnic' supermarkets being 'exciting' places to be.

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 29/08/2013 15:21

£1.38 per portion for 4 people eating 3 meals a day works out at £115.92 per week

I doubt this includes breakfast as a bag of oats to make porridge is less then £1.80 per portion. A bag could last a family of 4 for a week. Add some milk and fruit and it's still less then £1.38 per portion.

worldgonecrazy · 29/08/2013 15:21

I think it's a little unfair to use the £1.38 for 3 meals a day, when most people have either cereal or a couple of slices of toast for breakfast, and maybe a sandwich for lunch. For evening meals it works out at £38.64. Of course there will be some who have a tighter budget than that, but Jamie hasn't suggested people have to eat his recipes every single night.

JamieOliver · 29/08/2013 15:21

@TantrumsAndBalloons

Is your wife a mumsnetter Jamie?

Jules is on Mumsnet, and bounces between ASOS, Topshop online, but don?t think she goes on Netmums.

I don?t know what she really does on that laptop maybe I should start looking.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/08/2013 15:21

In the light of some of these comments, maybe Jamie would consider going a free cookbook, that could be made available via food banks, schools, GP surgeries/HV clinics, focusing on really low budget, healthy, tasty recipes that allow you to gradually build up some store cupboard basics - but don't demand 10 different store cupboard ingredients for one dish.

BerryLellow · 29/08/2013 15:22

To balance my question, I would just like to say that I love going to Fifteen here in Cornwall, and I genuinely believe that you are trying to make a difference, which you aren't obliged to do, Jamie!

BuskersCat · 29/08/2013 15:22

Jamie, if you started checking up on her then we would tell her to LTB Grin

That would be good to see.

missmartha · 29/08/2013 15:23

You can't call £!.38 per person per meal budget, thats just taking the piss.

I would have refused to write a book like that and aim it at the frugal market.

Jeez, it's really poverty sightseeing at it very worse.

TallulahTT · 29/08/2013 15:23

I Can imagine the AIBU reasonable threads about the kitty and sharing equipment, does that actually work in real life?

Vivacia · 29/08/2013 15:24

Oh my God no. I'm only just learning about RED FLAGS but I'm pretty sure that might be one.

HoneyDragon · 29/08/2013 15:24

If Jules is here bet she did a total face palm when she found out about the TV comment Grin

AintNobodyGotTimeFurThat · 29/08/2013 15:24

Oh I see my question has kind of been answered already.

OK then another question:

What is your favourite healthy starter, main meal and dessert to make/eat?

TallulahTT · 29/08/2013 15:24

What advice did Jules give you for being on MN?

Trigglesx · 29/08/2013 15:24

Most likely, HoneyDragon. Anyone that's been on MN longer than, say, 5 minutes knows how THAT will go over. Grin

swallowedAfly · 29/08/2013 15:25

add to that the £1.38per portion will have been arrived at by making a meal for four or six and dividing the cost. it won't be the cost if you're that single mum with her two year old who he demonised who will have to buy in smaller portions to avoid the dreaded waste we're also to be castigated for.

so £1.38 will in fact turn out to be £2 minimum for a family of less than 4 no doubt.

ScooseIsLoose · 29/08/2013 15:25

Hi jules I think we should get jules on for a web chat!

Vivacia · 29/08/2013 15:25

It must do Tallulah, Jamie knows because he's always popping in and out of poverty.
