Her book 'What Mothers Do - Even When It Looks Like Nothing' was the single most sustaining and validating book I read after DS1 was born.

She's written another one called How Mothers Love and How Relationships Are Born and she sounds like one of the wisest people I've ever heard on the subject of mothering.

Please can we ask her on? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese?
(P.s. you may have had her on before when I wasn't looking. I don't care, I want her on again Grin)

YES! I SECOND THAT!!!!

In fact I have just recommended her book on another thread about surviving maternity leave. And I recommend it to EVERYONE I know who has a baby.

Sustaining and validating - you have really hit the nail on the head there WhatFreshHellIsThis. It is a very rare book in that it doesn't tell you what you are doing wrong (unlike most parenting books) but instead it manages to tell you what you are already doing right. I found it so, so reassuring. It really helped me disengage from those feelings of powerlessness, guilt, resentment that I think a lot of new mothers experience and focus instead on the positives.

I think it would also be a great book for fathers to read as well.

I cried reading the first chapter of that book. Should be compulsory reading for all new parents.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 11/09/2011 19:41

I'm so glad other people feel the same! I'm guilty of giving it to every new parent I know as well Blush

Have just downloaded the new one onto my Kindle and can't wait to get on the bus tomorrow and start reading it....

What a good idea. I love Naomi Stadlen's first book and indeed was lucky enough to meet her once in person.
Only problem is that people would ask questions about how-or-what-to-do and Naomi is more of a fantastic listener than a dispenser of advice. So maybe this would be a webchat where she asked us questions too!

RachelMumsnet · 12/09/2011 11:08

Thanks for this suggestion. We'll certainly speak to Naomi's publicist about the possibility of a webchat and will keep you posted on this. Make sure you're signed up to our book club newsletter as we're going to be giving away free copies of Naomi's latest book, How Mother's Love later this week.

Darn it I just downloaded it to my Kindle! Still, given that I give copies of her book to just about everyone who has a baby, I'm sure an extra copy would come in handy. Will sign up now!
