What meal made your heart sink as a child

For me i think it was mince and potatoes. The mince was from a tin ffs!! With tinned peas and carrots.

My mum used to make me eat this and i would gag and cry! Oh and fucking ready brek as i would get pneumonia if i didn't eat it - boak

I grew up vegetarian, which was absolutely fine my Nanna was a great cook and was very inventive. However, she used to make these "burgers" which we made of soy products and lots of nuts and seeds, no seasoning that I could make out, they were so dry and were served without condiments or bread with a side of steamed vegetables. Veggies were nice but always got really cold by the time I got to finish them because the burgers were so dry it took a full five minutes to swallow one mouthful of it. I remember them being huge too, although that might just be my imagination.

Sunday evening usually consisted of a meal at my Grandparents house. There was always a salad and one of those ham shaped tins of 'ham' surrounded by gelatine Confused I loved my Nana's Sunday dinners though so I can forgive her.

The worst meal my Mum served up was chops with chips probably, we had a chip pan which lived on top of the cooker and was in use most nights. She always tried to encourage me to eat the fat off the chop Hmm

Luckily we had a dog Grin

My Mum was a great cook, in a meat, potatoes and 2 veg kind of way & all our dinners were lovely.

I was responsible for my own school lunches from a young age though, which tended to be boring. I recall having peanut butter sandwiches for over a year.

Most meat was overcooked and hard. Even in a casserole, which was always strongly flavoured with Worcestershire sauce. The rubbery, greasy pork chops with tinned apricots was another classic, along with the ubiquitous dry boiled potatoes and soggy veg.
When I was very little I wouldn't eat potatoes, so my mum always cooked pasta for me, no matter what the rest of the meal was. I have fond memories of eating pasta shells with my roast dinner.
We thankfully never got stuff like liver and tripe cos my mum was traumatized from eating these in her youth. However, we never had anything custardy or rice pudding for the same reason, although now I love these.

Anything involving meat that wasn't chicken, fish, turkey or stewed, good quality beef. I still don't eat other meats. My parents used to do a roast every week & refused to have chicken more than every other week. They wouldn't let me leave the table until I'd eaten everything on my plate which meant I'd sit there for most of the afternoon trying not to gag with each molecule. Eventually I discovered that I was allowed up for toilet breaks... That meant I could get a piece of toilet paper, wrap my meat in it when no-one was in the room & hide it under the piano until later when I could retrieve it & flush it. They never caught on & mum was horrified when I told her recently! Blush She'll be even more horrified when I eventually work up the courage to explain to her that it's a sensory thing because I have Aspergers...!

Curried baked beans. Yes, CURRIED BAKED BEANS. I like baked beans, I love curry but they should never, ever be mixed. My father was responisble for these. He would buy catering sized tins of beans and the add the curry flavouring and we'd be forced to eat them for as many meals as it took to empty the tin

Pork chops.

Not because I don't like pork chops, but because we were expected to eat everything except the bone. I don't do fatty meat.

And I was a bit older than a child, but mashed potato in France at a uni canteen. They made it so runny it was served with a ladle. It's the only food which makes me heave to look at it.

Mince crumble. Yes, that was every bit as bad as it sounds. It was bland, gippy mince with a crumble topping. I used to nearly puke.

Fish flan - hot quiche thing with tuna in it. Rank.

Cheese aigrettes - my mum got the recipe from the school cook (why? Why would you do this?) They were basically huge balls of fat rolled in breadcrumbs and baked in the oven - always made with that flavourless mild cheddar, not good cheese, ever.

Cod in parsley sauce - the boil in the bag ones. If really unlucky, this would be served with boiled potatoes (none of your nice new potatoes, just peeled potatoes cut into big chunks and boiled) and green beans from the freezer.

Por chops or lamb chops - what was the point in these? a 2p sized bit of meat surropunded by bone and gristle. Also served with the much feared green beans.

Mum is a really great cook, but her go to meal of lentil rice used to seem very boring. Lentil rice with chili flakes and raita. Ironically, now I have to cook every night, I love this meal.

I remember crispy pancakes as a kid, and I liked them. And tinned sausages.

I have actually up-vomited in my mouth as I typed this.

Tinned Salmon that had DM had added copious amounts of vinegar to and chopped cucumber, huge amounts of bone in it. She then used it for sandwiches for Sunday tea.
Stuffed hearts
Liver and onions
Butterscotch flavour Angel Delight.
A very weird dessert with meringue style egg whites and mandarin segments, can anyone else remember having this dessert?

I dreaded every meal that had meat in,I wanted to be a vegetarian but wasn't allowed.
I would sit there gagging but still had to clear my plate.
Blloody cruel to make kids eat something they hate.

1970s Sherry trifle. I boak just thinking about it now. It combines all the most revolting food concepts in one.

COLD custard, usually with powdery lumps of Birds custard powder throughout

WHIPPED cream, solid and tasteless and freezing cold bleugh. I dislike cream to this day.

Hundreds and Thousands bleeding lurid 1970s E number colours all over the nasty cream

Sherry - yuk. And alcohol in puddings is vile. Nuff said

Hard lumps of tinned fruits that tasted of nothing but sugary water.

Farleys Rusks - this is what my mother used for the biscuit element. I kid you not.

Sloppy jelly. It was doubly vile if it was green jelly.

I've come over all queasy listing that lot. Grin

My nan was obsessed with getting things stuck in her throat, so whenever we went over for tea, anything she served was semi liquid, or cooked to death. the absolute killer was mash potatoes. She'd boil some horrid old non-floury spuds and then bash them a bit, no butter, no milk, no seasoning JUST SQUASHED BOILED SPUDS. and She'd serve them with everything. A particular special was Mash, Fish fingers and tinned plum tomatoes. huuurgh.

We went to BIL's house for tea and they gave us: (after not eating and driving for 45 min because they never come out to meet us anywhere)

a hotdog (no bun)
crisps
half lettuce leaf
one slice of cucumber
one slice of tomato

I appreciated the effort of doing something but I felt like saying 'bloody hell you not that hard up are you'

It was meagre.

School dinners in the early 80's:
beef burgers in which I once found a molar (BSE city),
mashed potatoes with grey bits in (probably aluminium from the serving trays - early-onset Alzheimers here I come),
chips cooked in dripping, so unless you ate them when piping hot they were just grim,
spam (actually quite liked this - you could cut smiley faces into it),
milkshake - yellow/pink/green - didn't taste of fruit, but of washing up liquid, so god knows what they did to it

Fish fingers and chips - my mum only made it when she was in a rush (5 kids, 2 jobs and doing a degree), so she always burned it - it always looked fine then you turned the fingers over and they were black on one side. and the chips were covered in beans for the same reason.
She is a really good cook though!

Two words. Lentil Lasagne. No Mum, it does not taste "exactly the same". It tastes like what it is; solid farts on a plate. Also, my Mum went through a healthy phase where everything (and I mean everything) was sprinkled liberally with wheatgerm.

Tinned salmon mixed with vinegar and served in sandwiches by my nan as a "treat". This was usually followed by tinned fruit and evaporated milk but I quite liked that part and could still manage it for pudding now!

Oh god rimmed fish I remember the hell that is now. Pilchards. My mum.gave us pilchards with the sauce it came in in the Tin. And mash.

I hate pilchards and mash potato.
