Hello,

We’ve got a request for Mumsnetters from Brook, the sexual health and wellbeing charity.

This month marks 60 years since the first Brook service opened its doors in London. In their own words “60 years ago, our founder Helen Brook refused to let stigma stand in her way, and helped empower unmarried women to take charge of their sexual health by providing contraception when it was considered unlawful. Today, old, new and different challenges continue to shape our work and Brook remains committed to providing the services that we know our communities want and need.”

Brook is inviting you to celebrate their rich history with them, by sharing your memories of Brook throughout the decades. Whether you have used Brook services, worked for or with Brook or just cheered them on from the sidelines, they would love to hear from you.

One Brook service user, Linda, who visited Brook in London in 1966, recalled: “I was so innocent at that time, but going to Brook, it was almost like I was on the edge of a diving board, and I dived. From that moment on, I was swimming.”

If you have a memory you’d like to share you can post it here on the thread or you can submit via Brook’s online form (this can be anonymous if you wish). Any stories collected may be used on Brook’s website and on social media.

You can also explore Brook’s 60th activities and events, and join the celebrations via their website https://www.brook.org.uk/about-brook/brook-is-60/

Thanks,

MNHQ

I remember my first visit to a Brook clinic in London. I'd only ever tried to get help from my GP before and will never forget her sighing and tut tutting at me when I had to ask for the morning after pill. Talking to the person at Brook was completely different. It was more like talking to a big sister (I haven't got any sisters, so maybe just my fantasy of a big sister!) No judgment - they just seemed happy that I was there doing the right thing getting help with my contraception when I needed it. I came away feeling like a responsible human being, not an object of scorn or disgust. I have been recommending Brook to friends and their daughters ever since and, guess what, many years later I even ended up working there! Happy birthday Brook.
