Should MN support a BPAS call for non-protest 'buffer zones' outside abortion clinics? Tell MNHQ what you think

Hello all

We've been contacted by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, who want to know whether Mumsnet can support a call they're going to make for buffer zones around abortion clinics - and as ever we'd like to run it past MNers to see what you think.

Here's what BPAS say:

'Over recent years there has been an escalation in anti-abortion activity outside clinics in the UK. Women attending pregnancy advice and abortion centres are now regularly exposed to groups of anti-abortion activists standing directly outside. Many of these protesters bear large banners of dismembered foetuses, distribute leaflets containing misleading information about abortion, and follow and question women as they enter or leave the centres. Often, these people carry cameras strapped to their chests or positioned on a tripod. Women report feeling intimidated and distressed by this activity as they try to access a lawful healthcare service in confidence. Pregnant staff at clinics have on occasion needed escorting from the building by the police. Recently, NHS staff on premises where a clinic is located have felt so intimidated by the presence outside they have asked for the abortion service to be withdrawn. The closure of a service as a result of anti-abortion activity would be unprecedented.'

'We believe enough is enough.'

'One in three women will have an abortion in her lifetime. We are a society which values freedom of speech, but also one where the vast majority of us support a woman’s access to abortion services. The right to protest needs to be balanced with the right of pregnant women to obtain advice and treatment in confidence and free from intimidation. For those who wish to campaign to restrict women’s reproductive choices, there are plenty of opportunities and locations in which to do so. The space immediately outside a clinic need not and should not not be one of them.'

'Women should feel confident that they can approach centres for advice and services without fear of intimidation, or anxious that their identity will be compromised by protesters filming outside. Establishing access zones free from anti-abortion activists around clinics would provide the reassurance and security women need. We urge all political parties to act to protect women as they make their own personal decision about their pregnancy. Women deserve nothing less.'

We know MNers tend to feel fairly strongly about abortion and that there are views on both sides of this debate - so do please let us know what you think.

Thanks

MNHQ

I 100% support this. This is outright bullying of girls and women seeking advice and health care. this is not a free speech issue. These anti choice bullies can demonstrate freely somewhere else. I happened to work in the same street as one of these centres while I was pregnant recently and I received harrassment most days from these aggressive picketers. I was upset enough by that. God knows how I would have felt if I had actually had to get past them to get inside the building. I've seen them follow women and girls down the street haranguing them. it goes way beyond lawful protest.

Mintyy · 20/11/2014 22:18

About time. Yes please. There have been at least two threads on Mumsnet on this topic already and iirc something like 99% of posters were appalled at the tactics of anti-abortion protestors setting up outside the clinics. There were one or two who were on the other side of the argument, but if the threads still stand then they would illustrate very well the strength of feeling on this.

plumquilt · 20/11/2014 22:26

Another yes. I believe entirely in a persons right to protest, but not when that protest bullies and intimidates other, vulnerable, people who are merely exercising their right to their own bodily autonomy.

ModerationInEverything · 20/11/2014 22:27

Yes, agree with all above.

Treeceratops · 20/11/2014 22:27

Absolutely. I wasn't aware this happens in the UK (naive obviously).

Tanukisan · 20/11/2014 22:31

Yes please

I support this 100% too. I live near a Marie Stopes clinic and it makes my blood boil to see these judgey golems there to make a tough decision that has nothing to do with them even harder. I am pretty non-violent as a whole but have been sorely tempted to punch one guy in particular who is often out there. I was offered a termination at 30+ weeks. I chose not to have one and it was the best decision I ever made. I feel kinship and solidarity with every woman faced with a similar decision, whatever their choice. I support the right to choose.

catwithflowers · 20/11/2014 22:42

Another here, fully supportive of BPAS proposal.

ErmICantThinkOfAName · 20/11/2014 22:49

Yes. Please support this. I had to run a gauntlet of these "protestors" many years ago at a time when I was young, scared, confused and vulnerable. One man followed me up the steps to the door of the clinic and shoved a leaflet into my hands showing pictures of foetuses at various stages of development. I will never forget the kindness of the receptionist at the clinic who gently took it out of my hands and got rid of it.

As I left the clinic I had to walk though them again. This time I was given a handful of leaflets about support I could be given if I chose to keep the baby, along with further leaflets showing me pictures I really didn't need to see. Sat on the train on the way home I felt drawn to read the leaflets. I consider myself to be emotionally quite strong and the self-righteous tone of the leaflets left me sobbing the whole way home whilst their shouted comments rang in my ears.

No woman should have to experience what I did that day.

NecesitoDormir · 20/11/2014 22:52

Absolutely.

cardamomginger · 20/11/2014 23:05

Yes from me too.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/11/2014 23:07

YES, support this very strongly

These protestors are bullying vulnerable women and it is also stressful for healthcare workers.
Support this to help the 1 in 3 women who will have an abortion at some time.

glentherednosedbattleostrich · 20/11/2014 23:08

Yes, absolutely support this.

BittersweetSymphony · 20/11/2014 23:10

I'm 100% behind this.

mrslol · 20/11/2014 23:20

Yes. Totally support this.

DramaAlpaca · 20/11/2014 23:34

Yes, definitely.
