Not sure if right place to post but just thought I'd let mumsnet know that I emailed my dc primary school to express concern about OCC.

Not really sure what response I expected, anyway the head did his own research and has withdrawn the boxes!!

I thought I'd post to encourage others to contact their schools, probably many just have no idea.

Interesting MyStuff. I have been very concerned about the whole point of Christmas boxes, especially for children from non-Christian cultures. Surely it makes more sense to support a charitable enterprise throughout the year instead of sending some toothpaste once a year? I am also really concerned about the heavy promotion of a very right-wing version of Christianity.

I will follow your lead and contact our head.

Well it's a good job there are other, more ethical, options then initgrand so that doesn't occur.

I did the same a few years ago, when DD was in infants. School also did their own research and decided not to do the scheme again. Instead they supported a local shoebox charity instead.

I wanted the school to be aware of what OCC actually involved and to note why Dd would not be taking part - small classes so very obvious when someone doesn't koin in with something.

Well done. I expressed my concerns to (CofE) school when my ds was there a few years back and the vicar wrote back to tell me I was wrong. A couple of years later the school stopped doing it though although I know the church themselves still do.

For info, all I did was explain what type of organisation OCC is and suggest the head google the founder to see the kind of things he says publicly in America.

Nothing to do with being a grinch, all about standing up for what I believe ethically and trying to set a good example for my 7yr old ds. I might add he understood when I explained...!

Great that others have had similar responses. I can understand it might be harder for Christian schools as they could feel they have to support other Christian organisations??
