closure of government nurseries

Across Britain nurseries provided by contracted service providers located on HMRC sites are closing down or have been closed down.

This does not marry well with the spirit of the governments/Nick Clegg's priority, 'The delivery of good quality, affordable childcare is one of Nick Clegg's biggest priorities in Government (spokesperson for Nick Clegg, www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/nick-clegg/10045552/Nick-Clegg-blocking-Coalition-plans-to-relax-rules-on-childcare.html, 2013).'

These services are not subsidised, workers pay for their children to attend these nurseries. The advantage to the parents from the onsite nurseries are the proximity to their workplace saving them and their employer valuable time and maximising the amount of time they spend with their children, enhancing work life balance.

What sort of message does the closure of these nurseries send to private companies in Britain about the attitude they should take on such matters.

Workers at these sites may have to reduce their hours to adjust to the changes in childcare. Part time workers may have to stop work all together due to the reduced hours working resulting from them travelling to and from the new location of their childcare.

How is this promoting the interests of parents and their children's work life balance?

How is this protecting the children attending these services?

can you pleas help mumsnet? I would like to use this thread as a place for me and the other affected parents to organise ourselves, and also as a place to drum up wider support ( if their inclined to) from your other users. Regards lankydad

Dunno. How big is the subsidy?

Mammylu · 05/06/2013 23:50

Excellent cause lankydad, thefallenninja - the subsidy doesn't benefit parents, just the company who run the nursery. I use one of these and it was more expensive than where my big one first started - but well worth it! I couldn't manage to work the hours I do, and deal with public transport (which I'd have to do if it closed). Basically, I'd have to consider leaving work. These nurseries keep people in employment, and most importantly, my kids love it. They get a quality education and are well looked after. So, please, mumsnet, support the cause!!!!

Hello, am a parent trying to drum up support. How can I contact you? We got the link to the petition tonight and started promoting, going to continue tomorrow as I'm off work.

I am guessing it is not completely unsubsidised, otherwise why close them?r

The article even says the nurseries are subsidised! Why should the taxpayer subsidise your childcare more than other peoples?
