Mumsnet calls for an end to Premiership kit rip-off

As you might have seen we're writing to Premiership clubs, asking them to stop ripping off young fans with their replica kits. When we did our Family Friendly survey back in February 80% of you who responded said they thought football club merchandise ripped off families. We've now done the maths and the average Premiership kit for an eight year old retails at almost £60, rising to £80+ if you include getting the latest logos and player names. We know a similar (non-branded) kit at M&S costs £27, so are asking (very nicely of course) if the Premiership clubs couldn't produce a more affordable kit for their junior fans as they do for their toddlers.

As JustineMumsnet said in our press release "it's really hard to be the parent who says 'no' to the requests for the latest kits but these days you need a small fortune to buy a complete replica."

We'll keep you updated as the clubs respond to our letter, but let us know your thoughts, and of course if you want to tweet your club in support, that would be fine and lovely.

I read this .......

www.hotukdeals.com/deals/free-bag-with-every-pre-ordered-aston-villa-shirt-plus-free-delivery-plus-glitch/968395/#post11632397

...... and immediately thought of this campaign.

Absolute disgrace to consider this a good deal, I think everybody should ensure this get's a bad reputation.

I agree that this is a silly campaign. No child has to have a Premiership club kit. Why campaign about something that is already within the control of parent Hmm?

MN is very odd at the moment. I keep thinking that I'll wake up and it was all a dream

follyfoot · 02/07/2011 16:59

What a daft campaign. How about getting children to support their local football league club rather than trying to get even more Premiership tat out to the masses by making it cheaper.

Or how about a campaign supporting parents to say 'no' to childrens demands?

Carminagetsprimal · 02/07/2011 17:04

I've emailed Chelsea football club to say I'm backing this campaign - will tweet them too.

Silly campaign IMO.

Junior kits IME aren't as expensive as stated in the OP. I pre-ordered the new Liverpool shirt for DS1's 8th birthday last summer and it was about £30 including having his name on the back. Which isn't cheap, but it was newly released and a birthday present. By the time DS2 had a birthday in May and wanted one the away kit had come down to £10 in the sale with free lettering Grin

You don't have to have them. DS1 is football mad, but understands that if he wants a shirt it is either his main birthday present or he has to save up for one himself. Rugby shirts are the same price, he spent £30 of his birthday money on the new Cardiff Blues shirt.

mn should offer offer online assertiveness for parents who cant say op.as clearly mn feels it needs to save parents from pernicious persuasive marketing.decrease spending.but naturally not affiliated brands here on mn, like McDonalds, boden et al. wouldnt want to decrease the mn income stream

MavisEnderby, the thing is you can get (say) a violin for £200 and that lasts for life - apart from the occasional string or new bow - but a football shirt costing £50 might only last one or two years.
However, you can play football without having an expensive football shirt whereas you can't play the violin without the violin!
Parents can always say no.
