Following so many threads about ridiculous levels of primary HW and how it can really damage learning, I thought this is something that really needs to change.

So what would you change? My main views are:

  • an ABSOLUTE time limit - increasing gradually with age.
  • DCs should get at least 3 nights to do it due to childcare, activities and general family life.
  • HW should never be set for the sake of it.
  • HW must always be based on what children have been learning at school - not used as a substitute so the parent has to teach new things.
  • HW must always be marked or commented on, even if not completed in the time limit.
  • there should be decent differentiation so struggling students aren't put off with difficult work.
  • decent lines of communication between teachers and parents for feedback about how the child is coping with that level of work.
  • help for children who get no support at home.
  • amounts? Not sure on that one. I know lots think any is too much but IMVHO a little (abiding by the above rules) is fine.

Well that's my tuppenceworth. What would you change? If you could set government rules for primaries (I know lots of schools have decent policies already but according to MN several go way too far!) what would you tell them?

(sorry I wasn't sure where to post this, don't know if MNHQ will move it)

I think homework is totally unnecessary for primary aged children. Sending home work sheets is not reinforcing learning. Homework should be about putting the learning in context by connecting what the have learnt at school with what happens in the real world. it should be creative and engaging and should be differentiated to take account of levels of ability.
