Should I go to Antenatal classes?

I am pregnant with twins and have found both a local NCT course and a course an 1 hours drive with Tamba which would have much more details on twins.

I would just like to know whether I should go on the Tamba course as this is my first pregnancy and I need the info on twins. Or whether I should go to the NCT course locally as I'm more likely to make some friends and I don't know many people in the area I live in and none with Children.

Any help much appreciated!

Can you do both? I would recommend NCT if they are your first babies as you will get lots of generically helpful baby information and advice and probably meet future friends. I didn't go to the Tamba one as I couldn't get a suitable date at the time but a friend did and she said that it was really helpful but not a substitute for the NCT classes - it provided the extra information (e.g. she shared with me a handout about making a C-section a good experience, which I used to very good effect; c-sections were covered in my NCT classes but the Tamba tips were twin specific).

I know both are a fairly hefty amount of money, but IMHO, a worthwhile investment.

How bizarre that friend was me! Congratulations on your pregnancy. I would recommend both for the reasons that 1st has given. You get different things out of them which is especially helpful if you are a first time mum. (I did NCT for my first singleton pregnancy and the TAMBA one for my twin one). Also there is a lot of information to digest and even if some of it overlaps it can be helpful to have it repeated. Hope thaqt helps.

1stMrsF I've tried emailing. Hope all ok.

Thanks Ladies,

I'm a bit nervous but thought it might be overkill to do both. You've put my mind at ease and I'm going to get booked on both as I really have no idea about babies and now I'm having 2

Hi Galaxymummy where will the workshop be based?

Hi Lavita
Fantastic news about your twin pregnancy! I~ had twins last year and found it fairly straightforward (easier than my first singleton pregnancy!) My girls are now 8 months. Would definately recommend classes that get you networking with other parents. I went to NCT classes with my first specifically to meet other parents. There are some twin specialist classes around so do investigate. I am a midwife in Brighton and am setting up some here although the first course may be too late for you (September). When I was pregnant last year there was nothing available at all. I would recommend you book in around 24 weeks as the length of your pregnancy may be shorter than that of a singleton pregnancy. Check out the website if you are interested www.peasinapod.org.uk.

I went on the NCT one (also in Brighton) and they were v good at including me and giving me info specific to having twins. Was mildly embarrassing though that the course leader kept saying "and of course with twins..." but then with twins it's hard to keep a low profile so good practice! I made some great friends and it's been good to know people locally with only one baby as if you're out and about, they're always v good at lending at hand. Good luck!

MildredwithTwins · 02/07/2010 20:38

Congratulations!

I'd recommend both. I went on an NCT one locally to make friends, and another NCT one just for twins. I also went to some twins clubs who ran the odd information evening. It's been really good to have local friends to meet up with, even if they don't really understand the twin thing, and I've made one twin mum friend too.

See if your local hospital is running anything for twins as well. It can be good to be shown around the neonatal unit before you need it, to make it less frightening.

Good luck!

Hi Lavita
The class was held in Reading on July 10th and was enjoyed by all attending. I was excited last week as someone came from dubai for a private twins class with me,
!!!
hope you are well

galaxymummy are you running any more classes please? I'm not too far from Reading and am expecting twins in mid December.

AxisofEvil · 20/07/2010 14:26

I'm doing both the NCT class (3 days) and the tamba ones (1 day). Maybe it will be overkill but want to make local mummy friends as well as doing a twin specific course (and hopefully making twin mummy friends)

tryingtosleep · 20/07/2010 16:53

i went to the nct ones and they said lots of stuff about twins anyway - (probably because i was there and expecting twins)
but if you're choosing just one i would definitely go for them - as well as the fact that i met loads of people locally - which is what you really need at the beginning -

good luck!
