How frequently do you see your midwife in twin pregnancy

I don't know why I'm getting wound up by this, and I know I should be grateful that I'm having such a healthy twin (DCDA) pregnancy that I don't need to be seen often. But I feel I'm not seeing my midwife/consultant very much. So far I've had

12 week booking scan (when I found out it was twins)
13 week nuchal fold scan
20 week anomally scan and midwife appt
24 week midwife appt and consultant popped in briefly
28 week growth scan and midwife appt

and then
32 week growth scan
36 week growth scan

Actually when I write it down it seems quite a lot . I think I'm just getting wound up by people saying, wow you are having twins you must be getting loads of appointments and scans. I should just ignore them. But I'm curious, does this seem like standard amount of care for a low risk twin pregnacy?

It sounds like you are getting the same number of appointments as a singleton pregnancy but more scans.

I think I would feel like I wanted more if I was you too. Congrats on your special pregnancy.

sounds similar to what I had, I hardly saw midwife, saw consultant 2 or 3 times I think. They increase if they get concerned though, which was around 34 weeks for me

The consultant appointments were set each time I went - I asked at the first one how often I would be seen but they said they'd decide each time when i needed to come next based on how things were going. My midwife said she would be led by me, but the hospital encouraged me to see her between consultant appointments, so I saw the consultant every month, and the midwife every month but in between IFSWIM so I saw someone every 2 weeks or so, plus scans. This was all after 26 weeks I think, then after 32 weeks it was weekly - fortnightly for the consultant and the midwife. Every time I saw anyone they stressed that if I had any concerns at all I could book to see the midwife at any time.

I did keep telling myself that the fact that they didn't want to see me more often was reflective of a healthy pregnancy - try and relax if you can!

I am currently 34 Weeks with b/g twins.

I've had the following appointments.

7 Weeks scan & booking in appt (thought i was further along)
13 week nuchal fold scan
20 week anomally scan and midwife appt
27 week midwife appointment
28 week growth scan
30 week midwife appt
32 Weeks consultant and growth scan ( i moved areas so wanted me to finally see a consultant, i think they forgot about me at my last hospital!)
34 weeks Midwife Appt
34 Weeks Growth Scan & Consultant appt (which i have today!)(only reason two weeks apart is the consultant didn't want to use the info on the scans that i had done at my last hospital! Why, i have no idea.)

Now that i've wrote it down it seems like alot too.

I'll try and relax and be grateful that its a relatively problem free pregnancy. I'm just feeling a bit abandoned I suppose. Only 4 weeks til next appt/scan at 32 weeks and if I still feel the same I'll try and get them to schedule a 34 week appt. I think its mostly to do with my hormones (if in doubt blame it on the hormones) and people persistantly commenting on now many/few appointments I'm getting. Must learn to ignore them.

Thanks for your replies

Thanks Sophie, that sounds a lot more like my schedule. Reassuring to know that maybe it is a bit more normal and I've just been reading too much on the internet about peoples much more complicated twin pregnancies!

Good luck with the b/g twins, only a few weeks til you have them, very exciting

So far I've just had...

9 week booking in appointment with midwife
12 week dating scan (when I found out it was twins)
12 week Nuchal Scan (the day after my initial scan)

I am now 14 weeks and I am due to see my midwife at 16 weeks.

I will then have my detailed scan at 20 weeks and an appointment with the consultant at the hospital twin clinic the same day.

After that it's every 4 weeks, so -
24 weeks
28 weeks
32 weeks
with the consultant for checks and scans (inc cervical scan at 24 weeks to check for signs of early labour)

then every 2 weeks, so -
34 weeks
36 weeks
and 38 weeks if I get that far.

I've been told I can see my midwife in between times if I want to but unless I present with high blood pressure or something similar that needs monitoring I won't actually need to.

TartanKnickers · 31/03/2010 11:14

I didn't see any midwives. Just at the booking appt.

I seen my consultant every 4 weeks (and had a scan) and my GP wanted to see me every 4 weeks, so I went the in between weeks..So, I was seeing someone every two weeks.

tartiflette · 31/03/2010 13:37

I have had scans every 4 weeks since 20 weeks, and community midwife appointments every 2 weeks in between
eg 24 weeks, scan
26 weeks community mw for BP and urine etc
28 weeks scan
30 weeks community mw
etc etc.
Like you I am low risk. I was told this schedule was to be expected but in practice the community MW ones I have had to chase up and book myself - no one at the hospital has mentioned them since the first scan so I ccould only be getting seen every 4 weeks for all they know. Presumably you could book yourself normal midwife or GP appointments in between your scans if you wanted too?
I absolutely know what you mean, I would feel 4 weeks was a little too long to wait in between seeing anyone.
