Advice on Potty Training Twins

My DDs will be 2 1/2 at the end of Feb and I've started a loose form of Potty Training with them. DT2 is doing really well. She's still in nappies but will often tell me when she needs to go, and will happily 'perform' on the toilet. We've yet to get a poo down the loo, but I'm sure that will come. Obviously I give her loads of praise and she seems really pleased with herself. We're going to aim for nappies off by Feb half term.

Now DT1 on the other hand is showing no interest whatsoever. We tried with nappies off for a day or so and she just weed everywhere, and didn't even really seem to realise she was doing it. She is very happy to cheer on her sister, and will sit on the loo, but never actually goes.

Did those of you who trained one first find that the second trained quickly once they saw their sibling being rewarded/praised, etc? Or is it just a wait and see thing?

They are ID so I guess I imagined that they'd be ready at the same time.

I would say it's a wait and see thing. My DD's did it at the same time. I gave them each their own potty which they decorated with stickers and we had a sweetie jar full of smarties and they were allowed one if they managed to 'perform' in the potty.

I wanted to train them together as it gets the whole thing over quicker. I did have to clean up an awful lot of wee before they really got going.

My DD was ready to be potty trained months before my DS (I had been told that girls were quicker anyway by hv).

I trained my DD at around 2yrs4mnths and it took around 2 weeks. I waited until my DS was 2yrs9mnths, I jusst felt he wasn't ready any earlier, and to my amazement he took to it within 3 days. My DD stayed dry during the night within a few months whereas my DS was in overnight nappies until he was 5 so maybe I should have done him earlier?

I agree with Fernie. I think you will just have to wait and see and go with your instinct.

I am interested to see the replies on this thread as my ID twin girls are 20 months & I've been wondering how people tackle potty training twins. I've been wondering whether people try them at the same time or one at a time.

I never used a potty for DD1, just a toilet seat. Do you reckon that's possible with twins or just madness?

Sorry no advice here, just more questions!!

I have ID girls and they are very different in personality. One got the hang of things very quickly and got lots of treats. The difficulty was that her sister just didn't grasp it, despite trying her hardest, got upset she wasn't getting treats and we ended up having to give her rewards as well for doing, well, nothing!

My best advice would be to persevere with the one who's getting it and leave the other one in nappies. If she's happy for her sister to be doing well while she hasn't grasped it, that's great!

We ended up leaving it until they were 2.8 and summer was arriving -they then suddenly got it in a few days!

Thanks for the advice. I think I agree that I will just go with the flow, and hope that DT1 catches on after a while. I do want to get it over with, but TBH I'd rather not clear up two lots of wee!

i seriously recommend the lora jensen three day potty training method. can buy it online for an e-book to be emailed to you. cost about 15$USD i think but was well worth it and has a section in it about twins specifically plus online advice free too. i did it with my twins at 20mths (b/g twins). didn't follow it strictly to the letter but got DS done in a week and DD in 2 weeks. not having to wash nappies was great. they're now 2yrs 3 mths and only occasionally wet at night. google lora jensen - VERY VERY worth it just to be told a plan and to do it.
