Hi ladies,
My Dts are 3 months old and until recently had both been feeding well, DT1 was always a bit slower to feed, (she also spent 3 weeks in scbu ) but recently she doesnt seem to want her bottle, she takes maybe an ounce or two then refuses to take the bottle, she stiffens herself up and screams. Bringing her to the doc today to get checked but wondering if anybody else has any theorys?
Thanks in advance

Also while winding she gets wind up quiet easily , huge burps so dont think that is the problem

I breastfed but I also gave our boys the occasional bottle of expressed milk. I found my smaller twin was very fussy using a bottle, I tried allsorts and found that he hated how fast the milk came out and he used to gag on it and get really frustrated. It might be worth experimenting with a few different teat flows and maybe some different bottle makes. I used closer to nature bottles by t.t. But those where rejected by mister fussy as the milk came out too fast. In the end the only ones he would feed from were called playtex. I think if you google 'playtex feeding system' you might be able to find them. Sorry couldn't be of more help.

Hi Turkleton - I didn't realise your dts were 3 months old too - seems ages since I last saw you on the d'y ever thread so I hope you are all well .

Was going to suggest the same as twinmummy. I do sympathise though. We have the TT bottles too and have just started using a faster flowing teat - dt2 either collapses the teat by biting it or does what you describe and screams the place down.

You can try pacing the feed a bit too. I was shown how to do this in SCBU by letting the baby have 5 sucks and then tilting the bottle so they can't drink and then letting them take 2 breaths. If they are choking on the milk or forgetting to breathe while swallowing, this gives them the chance to rest between mouthfulls.

Hey bagpuss how are your dt's ? hope they are well mine are nearly 4 months now, thanks for advice about bottles, I had the same problem with dt1 and collapsing the teat by biting it and started using MAM bottles with the valve at the bottom, seem to work a treat. Brought Abby to the doctor yesterday and she reckons it is reflux, she has been put on infant gaviscon and it seems to be making a difference, fingers crossed it will last.
Thanks very much to twinmummy79 too

Hi Turkelton. DTs are great thanks . Glad you managed to work out what the problem was and hope the gaviscon does the trick. Dt2 seems to have stopped doing the biting thing overnight - I'm wondering of it was because he had a blocked up nose (permanent colds here) rather than a problem with the bottle.

was going to suggest reflux. My breastfed DTs have been diagnosed with it with similar symptoms to what you describe. The arching back is a classic diagnostic feature apparently.

Sounds like what one of my DTs had too. He would take an ounce or two and then just scream and refuse the bottle. He was diagnosed with lactose intolerance, and put on lactose free milk. It seemed to cure him, although it did give him dreadful constipation. In the end we gave him a mix of lactose free and normal formula, which worked fine and eventually weaned him off the lactose free back onto standard formula.

He is one in two weeks, still hates milk, but eats like a pig since he went onto solids.

Good luck with it.
