Diapering Decisions

Hi everybody, I have twins coming in June, and I have been kind of freaking out at the cost of diapers! LOL I figure in the newborn stage they will go through 10-12 diapers per child/per day. That's 15 packs of Diapers a month! I know they use less as they get older, but I forget exactly how/when it tapers off. (My dd is 2).

Has anyone here tried cloth diapering with twins? How did it go cost/convenience-wise?

If you are using disposables, how much do you spend a month (and how old are your twins and are you using name brand or generic)?

Thanks in advance for sharing.....

I have 2 singletons both still in nappies. I have been using cloth on both since about 10 weeks old.

There is a big outlay to start with, and I need to wash them about every 1.5 days. But I reckon I would be spending £15-20 a week to keep them in disposables plus wipes - we use washable wipes too.

Cloth nappies are great if you find some that suit you, far fewer poo leaks onto clothes.

I would suggest you consider using disposables for the first few weeks then go for cloth - as I am guessing there is a high likelyhood of having a CS? Mine were both CS and I found I had enough to do without mauling extra laundry in the early days.hth

i don't have twins myself but know at least 3 mums of twins who have used cloth nappies.
it's a lot of washing, but def cheaper than using disposables

or you could do half and half

I used cloth with ds2 and then again in the early months with the dt's but I found it too difficult largely because of the nappies I had bought. I had got 1 of that one, 3 of those etc so had to make too many decisions about wraps etc - a more simpler setup might have meant that I stuck to it. Plus I have 2 other children, one of whom is in nappies, the other soils nearly every day. If it had just been the dt's I would have been fine. I loved it with ds2. If you buy 2nd hand, go for a basic nappy/wrap combo even if different for the early months, it's very cost efficient. Lots sold on here. I'm still selling mine!

I only use about 4-5 a day each for the dt's now and they're 14 months. I use Tesco own brand which are fine, I probably spend £20 a month on them.

Would second sticking to sposies in early weeks, I couldn't cope until they were 1 month old!

My sister-in-law bought us 3 multipack boxes of disposibles for our birth present! Have to say it was one of the best presents we received!!

Wasn't brave enough to go cloth, but I know penty of people who've done it

Congratulations on your pregnancy

I have 5 1/2 month old twins, and use cloth nappies. I spent a total of £400, on all-in-ones (pop-ins) that should see them through until they are potty trained. I used them from when the babies were a month old (before that they were too small!) and it is no hassle at all. Just dry pail and shove in the washing machine. This time of year they dry within 24 hours on the radiator, and outside / conservatory in the summer. I do about 5 nappy washes a week. I bought 30 nappies which does us fine - they get through approx 5 a day - they are certainly as reliable and absorbent as disposables, more so, IMO.

If you want to do it, i would suggest buying them before your babies are born, so you have already got them and therefore have the incentive to use them, otherwise you may not have the time / motivation when the babies arrive!

If you think you'll have problems drying then I'd recommend terry squares. They dry quickly.
They are not difficult to use and I found them to be very absorbent.

Hi, we use cloth on our 12 week old twins and have done since they came home from hospital at 18 days old. I don't find it any hassle at all and have loads of different types of nappies depending on the situation (nights, days out, quick changes etc). At the moment they go through about 14 to 16 nappies a day (they were 7 weeks early and so still are very much like newborns though). At first I used muslin squares and tiny wraps for them but now they are bigger we are using a mixture of shaped nappies with wraps and one size pockets/all in ones.

Lottie, pocket nappies with microfibre inserts might be a good option for you also - my favourite are bumgenius but I have also recently bought some close parent pop in dream dri which are a one size all in one with microfibre soaker and dry super quickly. You can also get a bamboo fibre booster to go in them for nights but I haven't tried this yet. Let me know if you want any more ideas - I love talking about cloth .

Hi londonlottie congratulations on your gorgeous babies! I remember you from the AC thread (i had ivf/icsi around 15 months ago). I use the ones that bagpuss mentions - close parent pop-ins, although ours are the original variety. I should imagine that your apartment is nice and warm, so i would think they would dry on a clothes horse or similar. You could always leave them out for a day and then finish them off in the tumble dryer for a few minutes. Alternatively if you have a load of tumble drying going on, then you could pop the inserts in with that, and it's not using any more energy IYSWIM!
