I had my 12 week scan yesterday and cannot stop panicking. Really just wondered if anyone has been in a similar position and what you did to prepare, how antenatal care in a twin pg differs from a single one and probably about a million other questions when they finally come to me.

BTW, have been absent from MN for ages (although lurking), everyone's missing!

LargeGlassofRed, you sound very relaxed, I hope I am the same when I get to 34 weeks!

MrsBonJovi, the only thing I would say to your sis is that if she thinks she may be expecting twins she should get herself an insurance policy before she has a scan and then at least most of the major expenses would be covered by the payout. I didn't and am soooo regretting it now!

Hi and double congrats . I had twins in my 5th pg. I had 2 m/c before them so they were #3 and #4. I have since had #5. Out of 8 pregnancies, only 1 was twins but my Nan had 2 sets. I had scans from 16 weeks, every month. More apts at hosp too. It really isn't so bad...although I didn't know what to do with 2 x boys after 2 girls!!

MrsBonJovi · 27/05/2009 16:52

Hey bagpuss...what sort of insurance policy do you mean? May well suggest it to my sister

bagpuss · 27/05/2009 20:30

MrsBonJovi, if you google twin insurance then quite a few companies that offer it should come up. I think policies are about £40-£90 for £1000 pay out depending on family history - it probably wouldn't hurt to get a quote.

Hey bagpuss. When are you due? I am also recovering from the shock of finding out I am having twins, due on December 2. I have a DS who will be 23 months when his siblings come along. I am really lucky to be working at the same hospital where the twins will be born and its one of the best in London. I had my DS here too- and will have the same mideiwfe again how which is very cool. I think that we have a lot more hands on medical and midwifery care, an obstetrician (sp?) this time around and more scans. I had a nuchal as standard- all clear- and they couldn't use the blood test results. I love the idea of more scans so i can see them more but also to make sure that they are growing well, which I am already a bit worried about and I am only 14 weeks. So waiting for the shock to subside and beginning to focus on how to keep myself happy and healthy to give these kids the best chance they can get.

I know the chances of twins increase the older you get, not sure why though!?!?!?

lucya1980 · 11/06/2009 21:15

hi just thought i would join the thread of suprise twins!! i have a little boy who is 18.5 moths old and ecpecting twins end of september when he will be 22 months. i will be watching this post for any tips! i am 21 weeks atm. the regular scans are great. only thing is i cant tell so much when the left one is moving? is that normal? or is my placenta just in the way on one side or is it due to baby sizes?

idobelieveinfairies · 12/06/2009 20:03

Congratulations!!!

I had 2 sets of surprise twins!!

Had for singletons and then got caught on the pill (with a bug) and had twins who are now 8.

And then..took a chance on day 25 of my 28 day cycle and got another set of twins who are now 4.

Don't panic you will be fine.

Had to see the docs a lot more for the twins ante-natal care..more tired..a lot bigger (obv)..just eat well and rest as much as possible.

Hi, I'm a secret lurker...not even pg (and won't be for a while) but have convinced myself I'll have twins because of my crazy logic as follows....

I now know 5 people who are pg, 3 more who've given birth in the last couple of months...not one of them has been a multiple so crazy logic would suggest that if I'm next..I'll have the multiples... I know, I'm mad!

Anywho... [steps away quietly..]

The reason for the surprises in slightly older mums is that your body releases more eggs to increase your chance of pg. In theory, you're running out of time...sorry!

Anyway congrats to you all! If, in a few months, I'm back on here begging for help please take pity on me!

Decaf xx

PS idobelieveinfairies - do you have 8 children?! OMG! I hope you drink...!

Had forgotten about this thread now that the initial shock has worn off.

Hi BKD, edd is 24/11, I'm now 17 weeks.

lucya, I still haven't felt any real movement but have heard heartbeats at mw appt last week. Feeling a bit down about it as bump is huge and I keep thinking i should feel more pg now. Can't wait until 20 week appt is out of the way tbh.

Idobelieveinfairies, thank you for your words of encouragement - not really panicking about how we'll cope once they are here but more how to survive the whole twin pg really. Any tips very gratefully received .

Cheers decaf . DH used to very kindly refer to me as broken when we were trying for another baby briefly last year. We stopped trying and somehow I manage to conceive two at once .

twoplusone · 19/06/2009 12:36

bagpuss- congratulations.. we found out last week that I am expecting number 4.. a surprise as DH had the snip on the Monday and we foud out on the wednesday that I was pg.. he keeps telling me it is twins..

I didnt realise the chances of twins increased the older you are and the more pg you have had..

Did you feel any different before you had the scan..
I have near cnstant nausea which i never had with any of the others.. and am so tired.. but put that down to the pg and running after the other children..
Will wait till after my scan before changing my name from 2+1 to 3+?....
Again congratulations and enjoy..xxxx

bagpuss · 19/06/2009 16:37

twoplusone, thanks and congratulations to you too .

Looking back I did feel a little different from the start. Constant nausea but no actual vomiting and really tired - I caught a cold when I was 6 weeks pg and was literally laid out on the sofa for about 2 weeks (good job it was the easter hols). Also although I only tested when my period was late I had really awful heartburn for about a week before which I've never really had until late pg before. I will repeat what I said further down though - if you think it could be twins then get some insurance now before you have a scan and its too late. DH had an overwhelming sense that I was having twins just before the scan and so did I! Anyway, good luck with your pg .

bagpuss - thank you for your reply.. did you get worse pains in the begininning I put it down to implantation at first but this should have happened by now I am 6+1 and still getting low down pains.. cant describe them really they are just above the bikini line on both sides.. debating about getting them checked out.. as never had them with the others but as I have had no spotting or bleeding of anysort taking the impression that it cant be too serious.. sorry maybe i should post this somewhere else...
