Twins and seperate classes in a school with composit classes - any thoughts?

Went to parents eve last night. DTS are in P1 (scottish version of reception) and are in a mixed class of P1 & P2 as it is a small school. Teacher is v good. Kids love school/teacher.

She has offered up idea of next school year splitting them up so one stays in her class of P1/2 as a P2 but the other goes to the P2/3 class. Obvious benefits would seem to be, each twin gets more personal identity, (they are id) out of each others shadow, better behaved apart, more teachable, able to make own friends, time apart, etc. Down sides could be: will one feel left behind? Could it affect self esteem?, best teacher in the school is the one they currently have, other teacher may not be as good, they may end up doing diff work and a gap could develop.

Deciding is normally done by age ie the oldest P2's would be in the P2/3 class. Mine are the youngest in the school so would normally stay in the P1/2 for another year. Not necc an issue as they are in class currently with kids up to 2 1/4 yrs older.
than them.

Any advice am a bit confused and seems like the most important decision in the world even tho probably isnt!!

I have id twins in year one and there is no scope at their school for separate classes until year three. Then they are "set" for maths and english so their ability may mean they are together for some lessons. I think they would benefit from splitting for all the same reasons you mention. There is not much difference in their ability although one enjoys maths more, the other one is more creative. I really sympathise with you that you want them both to receive the same standard of teaching. This is a typical dilema with twins, isnt it? Have you asked the teacher what she feels the pros and cons would be? Do yours excell at different things? Although mine are in the same class I did request they be in separate groups when doing their work.I know one of mine often feels in the other ones shadow and loves being independant, doing things on his own,if his twin will let him!! Good Luck.

my 2p's!
I'm a non-id twin and was seperated from my sister pretty much throughout school, I think it was a good thing when we were at senior school but probably didn't make much difference at primary school. It was a nice safety net really. I suppose if one is much stronger then it may be better for them to be seperate as it might help the less dominant one develop.

Sorry for not getting back, am building a house and has been bit crazy recently.

They are both of pretty much same ability. Teacher feels both are overshadowed by each other but in diff areas. Ie one talks more, one is less sociable. Think best thing to do may be to wait til May til they announce who the P2/3 teacher will be and assuming she is not a poor teacher will go with splitting up as temp measure, assess at Christmas to see how its working, if its not then go back to same class.
