Am I being totally stark raving bonkers not to wean my DD right this second? Have just had 12 wk scan, so two babies due when she will be 20 months ish?

I can't bear to wean her when she doesn't want to, but bfeeding three is surely beyond the pail? Is it?

How much does she feed just now?

fustilarian · 12/02/2009 10:13

3 to 4 times in 24 hours. Not much at night, except occasional 5 am feeds....

Congratulations. A twin pregnancy is much, much more tiring than a single one, so you might feel you need to reduce your toddler's feeds as pregnancy progresses. You'll just have to do what feels right. It might be advisable to wean earlier rather than later, if you find you can't manage to feed three once twins are born and you have to wean your toddler then she might experience greater sibbling rivalry. But I understand it must feel difficult to decide to stop before either of you feel ready. Breastfeeding twins isn't easy, I've found tandem feeding very difficult, also it takes up a lot of time to feed them seperately. On the other hand you might feel that you want to keep up with one or two feeds for your toddler so that she can continue to share those special moments with you. It might not have to be an all or nothing decision. Good luck.

thanks- I have heard of people feeding toddlers once or twice a week and I would be very up for that, I am also concerned that I can't physically eat enough to support four beings at once (me, two pregnancies, DD). Am trying to eat lots of cheese, but not putting on a lot of weight yet... at 12 weeks.

So would that mean you would start to reduce your daughters feeds in the mean time?

With regards to your diet, make sure you get plenty of protein; meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts etc. good for making sure the babies have what they need to grow. People do put on varying amounts in a pregnancy. I found that towards end of pregnancy my legs and arms got thinner and thinner my bump got bigger but my overall weight didn't change.

am not sure re once or twice a week but a single feed at bedtime seems a popular toddler option...

Thanks again,

I'm trying to cut down to just morning and evening now, and hopefully just bedtime when I get a bit more pregnant...

People have said to me that it can be a bit of nightmare if your toddler is still feeding a bit when new ones are born, cos they want to get in on the action whenever the newborn does, but I hope maybe she could keep up an evening feed if I am a bit firm about it in the day? Hmmm, not sure still really.

Sticking to evenings sounds like a great idea. You can have a bit of Mummy-toddler time, which there won't be much of the rest of the day!!!

Get yourself a good feeding cushion like the EZ-2-Nurse for when the twins are born. It'll be much easier if you tandem feed and this cushion id a God-send for that. You can feed hands free. They're expensive but keep your eyes open for second hand ones on ebay and Tamba etc!

Good luck!
