Single umbilical artery

Hi Ladies - found out on Friday that we're having a boy and a girl so really excited and that they are both fine which is obviously a great relief. Little boy only has one arterial artery though and the sonographer was great and very reassuring and I know we'll be well monitored. I am just interested to know if anyone else has experienced this with a twin pregnancy and what the outcome was (think it is lower birthweight?). Thanks.

Hi Magnummum

Just read your post - you may have had your twins by now. I found out when I was 7 months pregnant that one of my twins had a single artery. I asked what that meant and was told he may be born with congenital abnormalities - maybe even Downs syndrome. I hadn't had an amnio as I didn't want extra worry during my pregnancy so I was annoyed at having this news forced on to me. I asked what I was expected to do with this information and was told it wasn't too late for a termination! My sons were born at 35 wks and were fine, I now have two healthy 6 yr olds. To think that there may be some mothers out there who would have considered a termination at hearing this news makes my blood run cold!

Hope you and your twins are doing fine.

Thanks BrightonTwinMum - I'm now 29 weeks and have tried to put the whole thing out of my mind to be honest, as everything else on the scans has been normal and as you say, nothing you can do about it anyway so sitting tight really. Three registrars and sonographer have been positive and one registrar casually threw the whole congenital abnormality thing into the conversation. Obviously it's at the back of my mind all the time and I'll be very relieved when I've had them (though I want them to stay put for a bit ). They are both growing well which is good and nice to hear a positive story from you!
