Conceiving twins...any ideas?

Would love to have twins - any old wives tales or scientific research about increasing the odds of conceiving them?

are you mad......????

Personally I'm panicking about twins as I'm feeling much sicker this time than last (plus I'm older, believe it or not). Plus I was really teasing a friend of mine who comes from a family of twins (whose scan shows its a singleton).

Got my scan on Monday - waiting with baited breath!

Any advice? Labotomy (sp?) ? Oh no, I'm sure I've offended someone now, but really I'm just thinking of my own inability to cope. My dad is a twin and I always wanted twins until I had my second child and was, and still am, permanently knackered! Thank the lord baby 3 was just the one!!

Flick - I have 8 month old identical twins - no twins anywhere in family but I reckon I conceived whilst away for a weekend in Norway and have always wondered whether the flight home had something to do with the splitting of the egg!!! Obviously plenty people have flights which do not result in multiple births but maybe it was the timing or something!

I have to say that having already had one pregnancy which I thought was pretty bad - my twin pregnancy was a bit of a nightmare and frought with difficlties but now I wouldn't change it for the world - just wait till they're moving around then I might change my tune!!!

Yes, black women are more likely to have twins.
I was interested to read about your Yoruba stuff, scummymummy. Do you have Nigerian friends/family?

I lost identical twins 13years ago at 14 weeks. I would love another set of identical twins. Any ideas!

According to an article in today's Herald (one of the Scottish broadsheets), the odds of two sets of identical twins are 500,000 to 1. I wouldn't set your heart on it happening again!

throckenholt · 20/08/2003 13:44

I was working this out the other day for another mailing list. The odds of identical twins is approx 1/240, so that would be the odds for anyone to conceive identicals regardless of what they have already. The odds of doing it twice would be 1/240 x 1/240 - approx 1/58000.

this is assuming there is no genetic tendency to produce identical twins.

I am tall 5'7. I have 3 teenage girls. A lost one baby before i had the girls. Then the twins and i lost a baby 6 years ago and another 3 years ago.
I am 36 now and would like to try for aother baby in a couple of years. I thought if i start on the folic acid now, maybe a chance?

cocoa · 23/08/2003 22:01

Ah i forgot to mention. My nans sister has a son, who has identical twin boys. Also my grandads sister has identical twin girls in their 30s. My sister and my brothers do not have children yet.

athleticmum · 02/06/2008 14:27

I have identical twin boys and had them in y late 20's.NO you don't want twins as it is always extemely hard, stressful work if you have mine. They are now 8 and it is nightmarish. I love them to bits though it is like having teenagers about. My hubbys grandad was a non-identical twin. So how do they get identical twins running in families?
I am available if anyone needs some advice.

pootlesmum · 02/06/2008 14:41

Clomid tablets normally increase the amount of eggs a woman ovulates. You'd need regular scans to check how many eggs your growing though in case you're very responsive to the drug and ovulate loads of eggs. Very, very risky strategy without scanning to check.

I have naturally conceived identical twin girls and wouldn't change it for the world

Egg · 03/06/2008 09:41

I conceived twins naturally age 31. I am 5ft 3ish. It was a big shock and although they were pretty easy at first I am finding them hard at the mo (nearly 5 months).

kateri · 07/06/2008 16:03

I want to know how NOT to conceive any more multiples once you have fraternal twins already (and so know you are Prone To It) but just want the one more! :P

Hi everyone,

The folic acid theory is interesting. I m/c 3 months before I got pregnant again so was already taking folic acid.

I love having my girls and wouldn't change it for the world, you get a lot of attention with ID twins and they are certainly special. At the same time though I wouldn't say that I would have chosen it if somehow I could have been given the option.

It is harder work than you could imagine and there are more potential problems during pregnancy and childbirth.

We were very lucky, our girls were born with TTTS but it only happened towards the end of my pregnancy so they were ok. They were 1lb different in weight and one of them had a blood transfusion but was out of special care after a day.
Now they are both chunky cheeky things at the top of the weight scale.

The amount of people that have said to me that they would like twins is unreal!....

it can be hard work..but so can singletons..it depends on baby/babies..i have 2 sets fo twins.....i had 4 singletons already..no twins in the family at all. The 2 sets of twins were indeed 2 the 2 happy accidents when we had finished our family...so i am a big believer in that theory! I found the twins fine, no trouble at all, however i have been looking after my nephew since he was 3 months old...and he is VERY hard work, has been since birth....to think of having twin babies who are like that would be a nightmare....so a gamble whether you have 1 or 2!..lol

I was 25 (i think) when i had my 1st set..i was on the pill..but had a bug and didn't think to take extra precaustions!...for a while i thought that is what had caused twins. But then with the 2nd set we were using condoms..and we didn't have any left one night...but as i was on the 25th day of my 28day cycle..i said..it'll be alright this once! and hey presto...twins again!

Good luck to anyonw wanting twins!

lindseyfox · 08/07/2008 19:15

well my friend who had no history of multiple births in family had twin boys non-identical 27yrs ago, 14yrs ago her sister had triplets. Both natural pregnanices. My friends daughter who is 28yrs old says shes never havng kids she prob would have quads with their luck!!

twinmama · 09/07/2008 15:55

Hi,

I wanted twins too! Think most people trying to conceive would love twins.....And then I fell pregnant and found out there were two!!! I can honestly say that as much as I feel blessed by having two healthy babies - boy and girl who are now 14 months - I regretted thinking that for the first year! Can't even remember much, a complete blur. Don't know if i fit into the stats you've all been talking about but I'm 5ft 10, white, 32 years old and they're my first. Good luck
