Missed twins at early scan ?

I had a private ultrasound today in the UK at 6 weeks and 5 days. The person doing the scan wasn’t a medical professional, and halfway through she became really focused and quiet. When I asked what she was looking at, she said she was double checking for twins because of the yolk sac positioning. In the end, she told me she was pretty certain there was only one baby, but now I’m curious — how likely is it for a twin pregnancy to be missed this early on?

Go see a medical professional

Explain paying for a scan from a non medical professional.

Kershaw22 · 10/12/2025 18:29

Sorry they are professionals it is a non medical clinic .

So go to a medical clinic.

marcopront · 10/12/2025 20:07

What were you hoping to achieve by having a scan at a non medical clinic?

What do they do?

gamerchick · 10/12/2025 20:14

Ffs, some people just like to have early scans. It doesn't matter why.

Something to keep you guessing for a later scan I think OP.

Mumofteenandtween · 10/12/2025 20:16

How are you feeling Op? I know a few people who had twins and they felt pretty awful from very early on.

Congrats!

I'm not sure what you mean by non medical clinic or not professionals? I would have thought that even at a private scanning place, the person doing the scan either needs to be a qualified sonographer or a nurse with additional training in scanning?

6 weeks is still very early on. The foetuses are absolutely tiny so if conception was a few days later, if their equipment is older, if the person doing the scan isn't as experienced, it can all affect the views you can see. Did they make a referral to the EPU for you or advise any follow up?

There is no problem with having an early scan.
There is a problem with having an early scan with someone who can’t tell you any information from the scan.

Why go to these places…. You’re paying to know nothing fir certain.

I don’t honestly think this is an indication. As a mum of twins I was lucky to have had a perfectly straightforward pregnancy and felt fine.

I don’t know if it’s DTs or not but congratulations on your PG anyway. Hiw exciting! It sounds as though it’s going to be a long wait until your 12 week scan Smile

I had a twin pregnancy second time. When I did the test it turned positive whilst I was peeing on the stick! I also felt far more sick and tired, though I didn't actually vomit. It was definitely more difficult.

OP, you'll just have to wait a bit. Actually at my first scan in the maternity unit that told me it was triplets. Second scan they couldn't find a baby so sent me to the main ultrasound in the hospital which is a better machine (where they do the anomaly scans). They confirmed it was twins and the 'triplet' was an echo on the ultrasound.

Were you relieved or disappointed that there wasn't a third? Smile

I had a twin pregnancy that resulted in one baby, very common I was told. I found out by chance

I was actually gutted. I believed it was 3 babies for a couple of weeks and had begun making all sorts of plans including moving house so we had a spare room for an au pair! It was a very intense time and it felt like losing a baby as I bonded with 'the baby'.

But by the end of my pregnancy and after they were born, I was VERY grateful it was only 2.
