When did you ditch the pushchair?!

We got rid of the pushchair with our singleton when he was three (when our twins were born). It was easy to carry him if he got tired. He’s now 7 and recently happily walked 8 miles round London with no complaints.

Twins are now nearly 4 and we take our pushchair out as an emergency backup. Unfortunately the sheer presence of the pushchair has them complaining that they’re tired, and so in they go.

Any experiences with this? I wonder if we should just go cold turkey at some point and see if removing the option keeps them on their feet. Alternatively I wonder if we get one of those trailers that’s just for baggage to hold things like picnic bags, coats etc on our days out that they can maybe hop onto for a quick break.

I’m desperate to take that old battered pushchair to a landfill site, shove it in and say goodbye to that era of my life for good 🤣 any tips on how I can make that happen would be appreciated!

Both of mine started refusing the pram just after 2. Incredibly annoying for those times you just want to shove them in it and get somewhere quicker but probably good in the long run

Mine were 3 1/2 the youngest twin walked often with older dc so I got fed up of pushing 1 in a double buggy so went cold turkey. I was also a single parent so had a no carrying rule in order to make sure everyone walked.

I had lazy dc! Ditched the double when they were 4&2 but ended up with 4 year old with 2 year old on her lap half the time!

My youngest is now 3.5 and has refused the pushchair for the last year or so. We only really use when out in a theme park etc for the day, and mainly for storing non valuables so we don’t have to carry them. No advice really, except if you allow extra time for getting around, leave it at home and see what happens!

My twins are just over 3 and we still have the pushchair but rarely use it. Just been on hols and took it with us but only used it once for a nap as they were shattered one day. Think we will be ditching it now! We have just gotten one of the trolly things and used it on holiday for beach stuff and once the twins were pulled back up the hill from the beach.

Ok, from this I think it sounds like ditching it is long overdue. I’ll try cold turkey this weekend 😬

Will they use scooters?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/09/2025 20:20

With twins I would want them in their for their own safety near roads and to stop them running off, but if they are more obedient than my child then less of a worry!

Ds was 2.5 only because dd was in a pushchair and didn’t want a double!
dd didn’t have the pushchair since she was 18m as it was easier we went on public transport a lot and it just worked better for us

Blueberry911 · 08/09/2025 21:13

About 2.5 as I couldn't get my child in it any more! Back arching, screaming, crying, the works.

Will they use scooters?

@Unexpectedlysinglemumyes they have balance bikes and one has a scooter if he prefers. That works for local trips but again they will decide they are tired at some point and I’ll end up loading
the bikes onto the pushchair.

It’s frustrating because one of them can actually ride a pedal bike, but it’s too heavy to carry if he decides he can’t be bothered. I think I just need to have a few weeks of pain without the pushchair so they get used to not having the backup!
