Flying to New York pregnant with twins

Hi there. I'm flying to New york in a weeks time and I'll be 19 weeks pregnant. I'm carrying fraternal twins and I have my fit to fly letter.

I also have health insurance and have bought compression socks. Is there anything else I shpuld buy or do to look after myself and the twins on the flight?

I'm starting to feel nervous about it. Thanks for your time and help.

Make sure your health insurance actually covers you!!! Twins often come early and I would never ever go to the USA without the very best insurance policy!

Is this trip absolutely necessary? I wouldn’t do it tbh.

How urgent is it that you go? It’s not a trip I would do unless I had no other option. Healthcare costs for a baby in NICU can easily run into the hundreds of thousands, and there are very restrictive laws in the US that may prevent you getting the care you need as a pregnant woman.

Yep I agree. Not sure I would go to the US as a pregnant woman at the moment.

With current legislation in USA, if there is any indication of a miscarriage the doctors will not treat you for fear of being prosecuted for carrying out an abortion. I didn’t think anyone pregnant was travelling to USA at the moment.

Double and triple check your holiday/health insurance. Take out extra if need be.

@Rocknrollstar The OP will be fine in New York, the state laws are very robust there. She would have access to treatment.

My concern is long distance travel at 19 weeks. Sadly, I have a friend who lost her twins after a trans-Atlantic flight -I’m not inventing this, she went into very premature labor. I don’t think that the OP should risk it.

Drink lots of water and keep moving. I flew at 24 weeks pregnant with twins and at the start of the flight an air steward gave me a 2 litre bottle of water and said I needed to make sure I drank it all by the end of the flight. Not sure you’ll get that with most airlines

Florally · 16/08/2025 22:31

I’ve never had twins so my opinions/ experience means nothing, but 19 weeks still feels quite early to me? Surely okay to travel if a doctor deems you fit to fly?

losssohard · 16/08/2025 23:32

You can get very dehydrated flying. drink plenty of water. Snacks on hand and move plenty. Please do decide if it’s necessary to go.

I gave birth early in the USA OP. I was 27 weeks pregnant, waters broke and I gave birth at 34 weeks. Travel insurance does not cover the birth or NICU, just so you know. My baby was awarded Medicaid thanks to the 14th amendment. Total cost to the insurer (for my care over 7 weeks) was £250,000. You could be absolutely fine or you could has problems - it is something of a lottery but good to have the facts.
