Just as the title really?
Just wanted to know at what point in your pregnancy did you discover you'd got more than you signed up for?

I'm pregnant with baby no. 5 currently, horrific morning sickness (on medication number three at present!)
Showing already with what looks like a 5 or 6 month bump.
We have no idea about paternal history as dad is adopted so don't know if any multi births in the family.

We've convinced ourselves there could be more than one! We did have a five/six week scan but there was one present and a teeny heartbeat, however, my friends have scared the crap out of me by telling me twins don't show on an ultra early ultrasound and now I'm panicking.

My twins were born last week. We found out at 7 weeks there was two. And it was very clear there was two!

At the first scan. My pregnancy test was a bit weird (the positive line but only feint "it worked" line). But then I was very lucky to have no morning sickness at all throughout. They are about to turn 20, where did that go?? 😁

12 week scan but had a feeling. Only had mild symptoms (but pretty much none with singleton).

By paternal do you mean your OH or your own father? ID twins don’t have a genetic link. Non ID twins do, but run on the maternal side (increased likelihood of 2 eggs being released in a cycle)

7 weeks at an early reassurance scan due to past MC.

Paternal history has no influence on multiples. Hyper ovulation runs down the maternal line - non identical twins. Identical twins are spontaneous and no family history.

Scan at 5+3 there was a suggestion of a second sac. Then confirmed at 7 weeks (with heartbeats).

Sorry I read that identical ones come from fathers genes / side. I meant my DH

It's reassuring to know it's unlikely they've 'missed' one then ☺️

I found out at a 6 week scan, by that point you would expect to see more than one if there was going to be more than one. I feel like the only time there could possibly be ambiguity is at the point where the sac/ embryo is at the very early stages of forming.. if you can see one baby surely you must be able to see the other one too if there are more than one? I’m no expert so I would be interested to hear about anyone who has seen one baby and then two at the next scan!

That's what I figured too! Scans are so detailed now I'd be very surprised if a spare could be missed? Think I'd just got freaked out by googling and people sharing horror stories with me 🤦🏼‍♀️

Two sacs seen at 5 weeks for me and 2 heartbeats seen at 6 and a half weeks.

anicecuppateaa · 06/02/2025 09:54

At 8 week early scan. Fraternal twins are genetic on the mothers side only, nothing to do with the dad’s history. ID twins are random, and there is a split very early on. However, your chances of twins increase with various factors - maternal age, and the more children you’ve had.

7 weeks at the EPU after a bleed, very, very obviously 2 with 2 strong heartbeats.

Non identical twins are due to hyper ovulation inherited on the mother's side (although there is absolutely no history on mine). Identical twins are a random freak of nature when an egg splits

Omg hahaha why is that gif there
