When did you get out the house after birth?

Hi!
After you gave birth to your twins, when did you feel comfortable to get out the house? Or when did you get out the house? With your partner as wel I don’t mean alone!

Only asking because we have a massive family, not extended family but so many immediate members. My partner has 6 siblings all very close to us 😂
I’m thinking when it comes to visitors I would rather visit them then them coming over to mine so I can leave when I want etc
We also have two family birthday meals in February
Twins will be here 30th January via c section!

Once my twins were out of hospital (they needed to stay in for 3-4 weeks) we went out for walks with them within the first few days (summer born though). My birthday was a week after they were discharged from hospital and I went out for lunch followed by the playground with them plus DH, older daughter (hence playground) and DM. Then continued going out following this. Think it was about a 3-4 weeks after they came home that I managed day trips alone with them (without DH or other family support)

Took our second DC to an antique fair in a pram when he was 8 days old. I remember people looking in the pram and being very surprised.

It's so variable because it depends so much on your healing and crucially how you cope more generally, it's major surgery.

Whether you have one or more children you'll get a wide range of answers but for you i would suggest keeping arrangements flexible but with lots of support you may feel up to short journeys fairly soon, my friend (in USA) was driving after a few days something which seemed unwise and not sure you can in the uk. For a standard vaginal birth it's usually easier on your body, I was in Asda within 24 hours, whereas when I had mi d they kept you in for 4-5 days for a c-section. Twins just makes everything harderGrin but congratulations, very exciting. Don't commit but might be ok after 2 weeks or so

After their return from hospital (in for about 3weeks) I took them for their first out of the house medical appointment 4 days in, then for walks (even in January) from 2 weeks. We had an aborted trip to a local national trust property at 3 weeks, a successful one with both of us at 4 weeks, then a brunch a week later. I think I was taking them on my own for coffees and walks from about 8 weeks and managed a solo brunch with a friend and their baby around 3 months which felt like an achievement. We had a lot of issues with reflux and averaged 10-12 hours a day screaming, and I was a first time parent, so probably at the more extreme end of the scale.... if you were going somewhere with a lot of people to help, close family etc then I think I could have done it a lot sooner.

I didn't have twins nor a c section but we ventured out for lunch when baba was about a week old. I'm not one for being couped up so I was more than ready to get out and about with him.

Thebigdigs · 29/01/2025 23:23

About a week afterwards - I was dying to get out and see the world again - I was so uncomfortable before the birth, the CS pain after a week was nothing.Better visit others - no need to tidy! Good luck for the 30th!

TheChosenTwo · 29/01/2025 23:24

Hope all goes well for you tomorrow, good luck! I bet you can’t wait to see those little babies 😍
I didn’t have twins, I had 3 singletons. First one was allowed home on day 2 and went out for a walk! Second one I was home the same day and went for a walk (only about 10 minutes!) to my mums to collect dc1). Third one i went for a walk with the buggy (again only a short walk) the day he was born. I was really fortunate and had straightforward births each time with no real complications and felt the need for fresh air.
Take it at your own pace. You’ll be having major abdominal surgery and I’m sure you’ll
need to move a bit but gently!

With the twins, we were in hospital for 2 weeks, then the next 4 weeks involved some very short trips, a few aborted trips and a lot of learning.
By the time the first 6 weeks were up I was on a train travelling 100 miles, just me and two babies.
It is so different to a singleton, the start may well be slow and bumpy but you will get there.
Congratulations for tomorrow.

Hope you managed to get some sleep in the Wink

Blue278 · 30/01/2025 07:05

I had a toddler when my twins were born so pretty much when DH paternity leave ended. About 2.5 weeks. They were only a couple of weeks early and vaginal birth.
I do remember having to sit down and rest halfway though a shopping trip when I first took them out. I had pain in my whole chest from my body settling back after my whole ribcage was distorted from carrying them.

TinyMouseTheatre · 30/01/2025 15:28

Sorry I meant to say hope you managed to get some sleep last night.

Hoping the DTs are here and you're all safe and well Flowers
