36 weeks waters broken before planned section

Has this happened to anyone and can you share your experience please?

I'm 36 weeks today and my waters broke at half 5 this morning and have continued to leak regularly, soaked through multiple pads and pants. I'm currently in the maternity triage awaiting a doctor so I know I'll find out more about what the plan is soon but I've been on the monitor and babies are fine, I feel okay apart from some mild period type pains which I've been having for the last few days really.

I know everyone is different just wanted to hear other people's stories really. I know the risk of infection increases slightly once waters are broken but I'm wondering what will happen if I don't go into labour or they're hesitant to give me a c section. I already have a 4yo but had a planned section so never experienced any of this and don't know what I can/can't refuse. I really don't want to be kept in hospital until my section date, mentally I won't cope with that whatsoever, the food is dreadful, it's uncomfortable, I won't get any proper rest and I have limited childcare for my other child anyway so can't realistically be in here for the next 9 days and then however long after the section!

Can I refuse to stay in if they say they aren't bringing my section forward? Can I insist they bring my section forward now my waters have gone? I'm panicking as like I say I've never been in this situation and was hoping I'd just make it to the section date without issue but the twins have other ideas Grin

I've not had this scenario, or know anyone in this scenario but in similar circumstances a friend who had a planned section for her breech baby had her waters go early and they just moved the section forward to get baby out.

My sister had similar - a planned section for a twin birth and she went earlier and they just did the section earlier. They are unlikely to leave you as the risk of infection is high once your waters have broken.

My waters went and I went in but had the choice to stay in or go home to see what happened but I had to keep taking my temperature in case of infection starting and anyway had to be back in 24 hours after to be induced.

My section was scheduled a couple of days after my waters broke. They gathered a team and delivered the babies rather than wait. They'll do what's best. Good luck!

They won’t want to leave you more than 24 hours so it’ll probably be move section forward or induction.

DonningMyHardHat · 11/01/2025 10:25

At 36w with twins, they’re likely just to get on with the section.

SoldierofFortune · 11/01/2025 10:25

They won't leave you 9 days with broken waters. Likelihood is you will go into labour in the next 24 hours anyway so they will just do the section earlier.

The standard advice 5 years used to be if your waters have broken they want the babies delievered within 2 to 3 days. As your babies are preterm they want to give you a steriod injection and wait a day to help their lungs develop but that’s more of an issue for babies under 35 weeks.

Good luck, soon you will be holding your babies.

Beamur · 11/01/2025 10:29

As others have said, your babies will be arriving in the next 48 hours. If your waters have broken they won't send you home for 9 days.
You will either go into labour or they'll bring the c section forward. Good luck!

I had this situation. Planned section at 39+2 but waters broke 37 weeks exactly. I was contracting so they asked if I wanted a section or a vaginal birth and once I said section I was moved to the emergency section list. About 6 hours on gas and air later in early labour I had the section no issues.

They may try and egg it out a bit at 36 weeks but your section if you still want one will still go ahead.

twinmumtobe11 · 11/01/2025 10:52

The doctor has been and they've put me on the list for today - they've got one section to do now and then providing theatre/delivery stays quiet it will be my turn after that so I imagine I'll be down this afternoon at some point. They said as my waters have broken and they're 36 weeks there's not much to be gained from trying to keep them in a couple of extra days and if I went into labour their hand would be forced anyway so it's better to just do it now whilst it's safer to do so.

I'd just sent DH to get me a Gregg's breakfast when she came and told me so now I can't even eat that, gutted! But hopefully everything will be fine and I'll be a twin mum by the end of the day. Definitely not how I was planning to spend my Saturday today, I don't remember being this nervous about having my son but that was a planned section with no complications or anything beforehand.

Thank you for all your replies
