MCDA - Waters broke, steroids, hospital admission

Looking a little bit of help/reassurance/hand holding. My waters broke yesterday round 12pm (34+4) and I was admitted to hospital where I’ve been last night and now tonight, I agreed to the steroid injections for babies lungs so had both 24 hours apart. I’ve had contractions here and there but not in active labour and managing with some paracetamol although waters are still leaking which is annoying if anything else. I have an elective section booked for 9th January (36+2 weeks) which was the “textbook delivery time” per my consultant but she was open to the possibility it would be before this in every appt.

My main concern is what’s next? I’ve an appointment in DOU tomorrow previously arranged with my twin consultant and I feel like everyone so far midwives and consultants are reluctant to tell me what to expect because they’re not my specified consultant. I’ve spent the last 34 weeks being told how high risk this type of pregnancy is and especially now with infection risk etc I feel like I should be doing something more?

Has anyone been in this situation before? Did you make it your planned elective section date? Once you had your steroids were you taken for a section (considered emergency albeit just unplanned)? I’ve a 1 year old at home and I’m conscious of childcare arrangements and would just like to prepare myself if anyone has been in a similar situation.

Can't help on your waters breaking. But my twins were born 33+6 after a uterus rupture. My planned section was 36 weeks. They are now 2.5 years and fine. They did stay in SCBU for around 3 weeks due to struggling to feed. And 1 had jaundice. I also only had 1 of the steroid Injections a few hours prior to them being born too by emergency section. So probably had no affect.

In relation to the steroid Injections I would think they are expecting them to be born soon. Apparently they only beneficial if given 24 hours- 1 week prior to delivery.

Hope your ok. The fact you are 34 weeks is quite good, not too far off your planned date.

I've got MCDA twins, had an emcs at 31+3 following a central abruption. We did a 60 day stint in nicu but they're 14 now and have no issues at all. I would imagine they will schedule in for section sooner rather that later.

No advice for your situation but I gave birth to my twins at 34 weeks, short stay in scbu to get stronger and then home! I had an older child too and the shock of mum vanishing one night and being in hospital with babies was confusing for him even though we’d prepared as much as possible.
They are all teenagers now and doing great.

Good luck

I don't have twins but on waters breaking, please ask directly about infection risk and whether you need to be given antiobiotics. My waters broke before any contractions started with DD1 - i didn't know i was GBS positive, i was left over 24hrs before labour started and she ended up with sepsis and a NICU stay. I believe NICE guidelines are IV antiobiotics if labour hasn't started within a certain time frame and then it is either c section or induction, so as you will be coming up to 24hrs this morning, worth making sure that they've got any antibiotics under control as well. (I'm guessing you haven't had a GBS test yet as I think it's usually done around 36-37w at those hospitals that offer it). I think probably worth preparing yourself for the section to be moved up. Good luck!

Thank you all for the advice. The consultant came round this morning and confirmed section will be booked first date she can get (Christmas catch up may mean waiting a day or two) and she’d like to speak to my twin consultants also before proceeding. Contractions are picking up so I think she’s keen to get me in before active labour begins! Yes thankfully we’ve gotten to 34+6 today which at times felt like a lifetime away, 36 was always an end goal but I had accepted weeks ago twins could definitely be before then! I don’t think any mental preparation will prepare us for neonatal or SCBU if the time comes for that but that’s another hurdle, focusing on getting these babies safely here now and the rest will have to be dealt with at the time!

Thanks @CrispAppleStrudels for the heads up I’m on oral antibiotics at the minute and bloods and urine being tested daily for infection!
