Pregnant with twins and a one year old at home

Hope you're all well!

I'm currently pregnant and have just found out I'm having twins (exciting!)

I also have a little one who just turned one. By the time the twins are born, he will be around 1 and a half. Wanted to know if there are any mothers who have experienced this / have any advice!

Many thanks

Sorry that you haven't had any responses to this. Just wanted to say congratulations Flowers

Hi OP, I've not experienced quite this (my older DD was nearly 3 when my twins arrived) but I just wanted to say congratulations. Also, I think it's much easier to have twins after a singleton vs as your first foray into parenthood! So that's something 😅

WhiskerPatrol · 09/11/2024 09:25

My cousin had this exact situation! First couple of years were pretty hard work but they got through it and now their DCs are a lovely little team. Sleep training, military schedule/routine, don't worry about what your house looks like, try to get the older one potty trained before the twins arrive, and really work on independence and kindness with all three from as early as you can (putting on own shoes/clothes, sharing/swapping toys nicely, everyone helps to tidy up toys before bathtime etc). Have a look at TAMBA for advice and support too. Good luck!

Our DS was fully potted trained at 2 years 3 months. I think 18 months might be a bit optimistic? Wink

I think mums on here who had kids before disposable nappies might disagree.....

Then you had to potty train as the new baby needed the nappy.

By these days, yes true.

Congratulations!!

I'm a twin. When my mum bought us home she already had three kids under 5. 😲
I often wonder how she managed. Ido remember bed time was very strict. She needed her time in the evening.
So maybe that's my advice!

Oops, wrong quote!!

Congratulations! 💐💐💐

I always wanted twins but I do have 2 close in age out of my 4!

I'd read as many blogs, Pinterest routines etc from mums in the same situation or who have been and see what will work for you.
I do agree though routine will be the best cause of action.

Odd question but have you considered the practicalities such as push chairs?

Thank you so much! Hadn't thought about routines so that's a great point

Yess I've been having a look at double buggies online and thinking of adding a buggy board for my older one. Haven't seen much about how to get three young ones out and about!

Aw congratulations! I also have twins! I'd recommend joining some of the Facebook Twin groups - like U.K. Twin Support one or the Mums of Twins and Multiples one - you'll get a lot of advice and reassurance on there - yes there can be lots of posts about how hard it can be but just as many uplifting ones

notbeenagreatday · 09/11/2024 13:57

@NancyD92

I have 3 children - so when the twins came along look at your day to day lifestyle - my house has a narrow entrance door so side by side pram was a no go - I went for a double decker silver cross one - also lots of shops -NEXT is a prime example never have space to fit a side by side pram through 😂

When going out and about - I'm a single parent - when they start walking bright clothes and hoodies for ease of seeing and catching 😂

My twin sister! I and our younger sister were so supportive when she told us she was expecting twins, I think we both held off laughing for at least 10 seconds! My sister has a 13 month age gap between her 3dc, they are now 11, 10 and 10. I'm not going to lie, the first 2/3 years were hard, but having and sticking to a good routine worked wonders. She was a very active member at the local multiples club and her and their pushchairs of choice seemed to be the out n about nipper double, with a sling when 1 baby was little (she used a connecta sling) and then a buggy board. Incidentally my mum also had twins then 17 months later a singleton and then 15 months later another singleton, 4 under 3.5.

TeenGreenBottles · 09/11/2024 14:33

Congratulations! I echo asking in twin Facebook groups. I had my twins and then my singleton so haven't been in your situation, but I would really recommend a twin sling for the early days. The weego is really good. People will tell you that you can use a stretchy wrap but it's impossible.

Even if your singleton was a bit older I'd not potty train when you've got very young twins. Nappies are much easier with newborns or tiny babies because it takes away the urgency.

StandingSideBySide · 09/11/2024 14:33

I had twins when my eldest was 3.
Nursery was my saviour.

I think over time I have forgotten that it was stressful.

One tip
When you put them in their car seats remember there will be one behind you in the car. Double Check and make sure you have both twins before you drive off. Countless times I left the twin who usually sat behind me in the car on the doorstep whilst I drove off. I’d arrive at destination with only one twin ….. thank heavens for great neighbours!

TeenGreenBottles · 09/11/2024 14:34

Also if you plan to breastfeed there's a really good Facebook group, breastfeeding twins and multiples.

WrongSortOfPoster · 09/11/2024 14:37

Congratulations! i has 2 under 15 months, and it wasn't as bad as I expected. Can't comment about twins other than they are usually great.

Gina Ford for routines….another of my saviours.
Im aware she’s controversial but I couldn’t have coped without her.

My dh measured the doorways of all the shops in our local town (not a big town) to make sure we bought a buggy that fitted in all the doorways. I assure you, no one here thought that odd 😁
