Hi @MrsChas i am also a twin mum (first time) to 8 week old dcda twins, how are you getting on? Time goes so quickly doesnt it!

MrsChas · 20/08/2023 15:11

@TwinMummaX hey! Congratulations gosh it really does I can't believe they've now been here longer than I carried them for!

how are you finding things? X

@MrsChas i think im just starting to find my feet to be honest, they are both amazing with such amazing little personalitys. We have some kind of a routine although some days are just go with the flow. Im lucky to of had a lot of help. The only thing im finding a little bit difficult is feeding them at the same time. They are both ff and are so in sync, its ok when my partner is home from work or if family are here to help but on my own i either have to feed one at a time which means i have 1 screaming baba for 15/20mins or i try to feed both together using nursing cushions but my little boy has tongue tie and spills a lot of milk. How are your little ones? Do you have much of a routine now? X

MrsChas · 20/08/2023 16:12

@TwinMummaX you sounds like you're doing a far better job than I was that early on haha I was so lost for the first 4 months.

Now strict routine is the only way we cope - my husband is constantly working so I only have a helping hand when mums over so I have had to learn to utilise everything I can 🤣

Feeding wise I found using two regular nursing cushions either side of me sat on the sofa was best but when they were really small I propped them up in the bouncer and fed at the same time that way!

My lil ones are ok thank you we just got back from a weekend in Brighton.

Are you London based? X

Hi 👋 I am a Twin mum to 20 month old boy girl twins, I also have 3 older children and having twins is wonderful but also a whole new ball game!

Routine routine! I’m so strict with this in a way I never was with any of my singletons but I just fine the routine make so many things so much easier.

Now that mine are walking and have a few words it’s just so special watching them learning and playing together, though I’ll offer a heads up in that it will not matter if you have 2 of the exact same thing in the exact same colour one twin will always inevitably want the one the other twin has!! Watching them wrestle over the same red toy phone or the same blue toy car whilst an exact copy of it sits idle in the corner is 🙈 and nope just handing them the exactly identical other one doesn’t work, I wish it did!!!

TinyTeacher · 20/08/2023 18:03

Hi! Mine are older - nearly 3 now.

I love them to bits, but I did find the first year tough, so just wanted to pop on the thread to say it's going to get easier! Feeding twins is so difficult sometimes. Very much easier when its just an extra seat at the table 😄

newrubylane · 20/08/2023 18:12

Mine are four, a boy and a girl. It gets so much easier as they get bigger, hang in there! The first year with mine is basically a blur! Once they get towards three that start to play together, and it's just the best - for them and for you.

MrsChas · 20/08/2023 19:00

Yay so lovely to see some more twin mamas on here honestly sometimes it gets difficult trying to find people to understand just little tips and tricks that were shared with me make my life sooo much easier.

And the sharing toys thing no one warned me of this 🫣 they both have a green slug toy why must they fight over the one in their twins hand 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 x

TwinMummaX · 20/08/2023 19:56

@MrsChas i am in Nottingham 🙂
I can imagine as they get older it is a different kind of hard, as long as they have a good night and we all have enough sleep i find they have a much more settled day. They are just beginning to smile and babble, melts my heart. Isnt it a military operation to get out of the house though!?

MrsChas · 20/08/2023 20:27

@TwinMummaX oh that's lovely!
Military operation - to say the least! And honestly the constant people stopping me whilst I'm out still shocks me 🤣 not many twins round here I'm guessing!

My two are teething terribly at the moment so that's been really difficult but it'll pass and hopefully they'll feel much better soon!

How are you finding operating a double pram?! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 x

OP posts:
TwinMummaX · 20/08/2023 20:40

@MrsChas i know i get stopped all the time when they notice the twins, although i feel like twins are a lot more common now, unless i just notice them more now i have my own im not sure.
When did they start teething? The double pram is a nightmare to get in and out of the car 🤣 it takes us so long to get into the car strapped in, pram collapsed, changing bag 🤣 wouldnt have it any other way though. Have you been to any mother & baby groups? I dont have any friends with young children and id love to get out and meet new people im just a bit nervous about going for the first time x

MrsChas · 21/08/2023 07:25

@TwinMummaX Morning! Argh my poor boys started teething at 10 weeks and honestly it never stopped it's quietens down and then starts again. One has two teeth the other has 4.

Haha the double pram is something else! Although I just purchased the baby jogger city tour 2 double which is incredible as they get older (it's side by side and fits through single doors!)

Argh I feel the same I have a couple mum friends and I'd love to try a baby class but the thought of going alone with twins is daunting. I'm hoping when they're on their feet I'll feel more confident and perhaps just go straight to soft play 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are you joint to 'twins trust'? A stranger approached me in the street and told me it's incredible so I googled them and it really is! Has lots of courses and classes specifically for twin mummy ♥️ x

Hi. I have 14 month old identical girls. And the same reassurance here, it does start to get easier. Although I now have the task of keeping both safe when the a climbing and running in opposite directions... the park is exhausting!

I go to a local twins group which I have made friends with lots of other twin mums. So I'd suggest looking to see if there is one in your area. They have loads of suggestions to make life a little easier (which non twin parents have no idea about). Also we pass on loads of twin products to each other. I've never bothered buying 2 identical things of anything. Most of the twins toys are hand me down from my older one.

I too get annoyed with the constant stranger love of twins. Takes so much longer round the supermarket with them sat in the trolley together!

Lillygolightly · 21/08/2023 10:17

As for prams I really wanted the bugaboo donkey to start but DH wasn’t a fan and talked me out of it. We ended up with a Silvercross Wave Tandem and I have to say for early on it was absolutely fantastic and fit everywhere with ease. Once the babies were older though I didn’t like one being sat behind the other and found it heavy to push so I ended up getting a second hand Baby Jogger on marketplace and whilst it’s certainly not an attractive pram it’s easy to fold, fits through my doors and the hoods come down really low and is miles more lightweight and easier to push than the Silvercross. I honestly thought could still kick myself for letting DH talk me out of the bugaboo.

There aren’t any twin baby groups near me but my local library has a stay and play once a week which is nice and friendly, still daunting going with 2 on my own though.

ChristmasCrumpet · 21/08/2023 10:28

Mine, boy/girl are 3yrs.

My advice for you? If you haven't already, get one of those massive playpen with the foam floors.

You can leave them in there when they are mobile, and actually answer the door/make a tea/leave the room for thirty fucking seconds Grin without two small people waddling after you.

It was a game changer for me. I knew if they were in there, they couldn't hurt themselves on anything, they might cry, but they were safe.

Our house is quite open plan, and it got to the point it was so helpful, that I'd position it so I could see it by sticking my head out the study, so I could whack The Gruffalo on, put them in there with some baby toys, and be able to work on something in peace....for the duration of the Gruffalo anyway, but it felt like such a break.

MrsChas · 21/08/2023 11:39

Yh I have the bugaboo donkey 5 I love it but honestly it's absolutely huge if I could go back I would have got the I candy peach but that's done now :)

I just purchased a play pen however despite its size my boys still manage to meet in the middle to have a little play fight which stresses me out 🤣 make a tea ? I'll be lucky to grab a drink ready made before I'm having to grab one of them or stop a crying fit 🫣

I've just searched up a local twin group perhaps I'll just pluck up the courage and go!

OP posts:
Lillygolightly · 21/08/2023 14:03

Oh yes the playpen! I honestly wouldn’t be without mine as it so useful and yes allows me to answer the door, make a brew or let the 5 year old have some of her big girl toys out, it’s also good for separating the twins when need be.

I can also recommend the Schnuggle toddler bath, up until recently I was able to fit both of mine in together. I find bath times easier in the living room as I’m able to distract one with Hey Bear baby sensory on the TV whilst I bath the other one, also my changing station and everything I need is already there so I don’t need to trek stuff up and down the stairs. When our main bathroom is finally finished I do look forward to getting them together in the bath again though.

As for getting hot drinks I recommend getting yourself a thermos, it’s the only way to have a hot drink!

MrsChas · 21/08/2023 20:34

@Lillygolightly haha didn't even think of a thermal in the house although I will certainly be trying that tomorrow!

Funny you say that I bath mine in our lounge as my bathroom is tight I can't imagine fighting to bathe one and keep the other safe and distracted at the same time.

I have just the twins and most days are a struggle so hats off to you with an additional bubba too! X

@MrsChas Morning, i have only just got around to checking in on here my little ones had their 8 week immunisations yesterday, that was a traumatic experience for all 3 of us i think 🙈 they sobbed bless them. I did take my sister for an extra pair of hands so they both got lots of cuddles. They have been quite grizzly through the night. But are now napping so im having a coffee and taking a breath. How were yours after their jabs? Im dreading the 12 week ones. I havent looked at the 'twins trust' but i definitely will. Any advice twin mummas about what toys i can get for them now? They have a gym mat with dangly sensory toys on, they have different mats for tummy time, is there anything else you'd recommend that your little ones enjoyed at this age? Play pen is definitely on my list to buy soon x

MrsChas · 22/08/2023 14:27

@TwinMummaX hey mama hope your lil ones feeling a bit better today. My boys were ok but I did give them calpol an hour before every injection and every 4 hours for the whole 24 hours as our doctor recommended. X

Hi everyone 😊 jumping on as I have 5 month old dcda boys. Was super lucky to get pregnant with my gorgeous boys after IVF. Will be great to chat to some other twin mums as I haven't managed to find any groups in my area! I read somewhere that months 3-6 are the hardest so I'm really hoping some of you who are further down the line can confirm this! 😅😅😅

MrsChas · 22/08/2023 16:21

@truetotal hey! Oh that's lovely - my DCDA boys are IVF also ♥️ how are you finding things. ? X

OP posts:
truetotal · 22/08/2023 19:26

@MrsChas oh gosh, barely surviving at the moment 😅 attempting to get into some sort of a routine for sleep but it's a big challenge! They're very different little personalities as well which is making things tricky. At the moment twin 2 refuses bottles and basically wants exclusively breastfed every two hours night and day and insists on sleeping burrowed into my armpit in our bed 🙈 cosleeping was never part of my plan but it's the only way I get any sleep. Twin 1 is a lot more chill! Managed to get to a baby sensory class with DH this week though so that felt like a bit of an achievement! How are you getting on?

MrsChas · 22/08/2023 19:40

@truetotal bless you that must be so hard! I'm still struggling this end 🤣 all the twin mums I know have much older twins (more my age) and all they tell me is 'don't worry it gets easier as they get older' so we're powering through just trying to stay alive 🥹 and thrive of course :) x

OP posts:
Lillygolightly · 23/08/2023 09:49

@truetotal my twins were very similar like that, boy twin was a boob monster and liked to be held a lot, my girl twin was not fussed at all a didn’t seem to have any preference between breast or bottle as long as she was fed and was quiet happy to settle herself. It used to make me feel really guilty in the early days as I felt that she got less attention just because she was more chilled out, but at 20 months she’s definitely made up for it now 😂
