Did anyone start off with both twins in one next to me?
If so, how long until they got to big to share it?

I have two cots for them so I can move a cot into our room for them but the next to me is easier to move about if I can squeeze a couple of months out of it!

If it makes a difference my twins are currently measuring on the first centile and I'm 31 weeks

Mine are teens now but had one moses basket till they were about 3 months then put them both in a cot together (moses basket inside to start with) until they went into separate beds aged 21 months.

Maybe I will squeeze a few months out of it then!

Hey, congratulations!

My twins were born at 31 weeks and after 4 weeks in nicu, they shared a next to me for approx 3 months so can be done and much easier for you. They then went into individual compact cots but slept better together so we bolted the two cots together and they continued to share until 1 years old and we moved house.

They are nearly 5 now and still creep into bed with each other occasionally!

Lullaby trust says one bed per baby FYI

Donimo · 10/03/2023 16:29

I initially put my twins in a next to me together. But as they were separated whilst in special care they never settled sleeping together. So had individual moses baskets which they fitted in till 6 months old (they are on the 1st percentile).

@Smogtopia
Could you link me?

I did research this earlier in pregnancy and this is what I found on the lullaby Trust website.

'At The Lullaby Trust, we often will promote co-bedding your twins so that you can share a room with them, if you have restricted space. Sharing a room with your babies is a really important measure you can take to reduce the chance of SIDS.

However, there are other reasons you might want to co-bed your twins that you might want to look into. Various areas of research have suggested that putting twins in the same cot can help them regulate their body temperatures and sleep cycles, and can soothe them and their twin.'

@Donimo I haven't bought moses baskets but I could sell the next to me and pick some up if that's what they prefer - thanks!

Mine shared a Next To Me until they were about 6 weeks. They were good sizes for twins though, twin 1 was 7lb 1oz at birth and twin 2 was 6lb 5oz. If they were smaller and less annoyed by each other, we could’ve gotten longer out of it.

After that they slept in a cot bed next to the bed with one side down, that lasted until about 6 months when they started sleeping on a mattress on the floor (Co sleeping with one parent, we take it in turns). They are almost 2 now. We now have a single & double mattress on the floor for the twins plus parent on duty.

My twins don’t seem to draw comfort from each other, they just want a parent with them. They’re fraternal and as different as siblings can be. ID twins might be closer.

Smogtopia · 10/03/2023 19:45

Sorry to be unclear - has to be a cot / not a small next to me / crib or Moses basket

Louisa4987 · 12/03/2023 20:43

Mine outgrew the next to me fairly quickly and if it wasn't for the fact we had it anyway from their older sibling it would have been a waste of money. They shared a travel cot until 6 months though with a proper mattress. If you've got space for it I'd go straight for something bigger. My twins were below 5th centile as well so tiny!

Aliceinwonderland5 · 26/03/2023 20:31

They arrived two weeks ago at 3lbs so once they're out of the nicu I think they'll fit in it for a few months!

Congratulations @Aliceinwonderland5 and hope you can bring the babies home soon.

Hanna86 · 16/04/2023 06:38

Mine shared a Moses basket for 2 weeks, then it started to look a bit snug (my bigger twin was born at 6.5lbs so basically a normal sized baby). Then separate Moses, single file down the side of my bed. Then separate cots next to each other. They are very active in their cots now at 10 months so I don't think they could really share now anyway.
