Twins - where to sleep

Hi. We're expecting twins in august. I have an 18 month old who'll be about 22m when they arrive.

When we had my son we put him in his stroller bassinet (uppababy vista) for day time sleep (or we tried to, but he mostly would only sleep in my arms). At night he sleep in a next2me until about 6m when he went into a cot bed. He's still in that and I guess he'll still be for some time, but I'm not really sure when he should transition out of that.

I'm wondering what we should use/buy for the twins? Would like to try keep them together at first at least. If they're together for night time sleep, should I keep them together for day time sleep as well for consistency? And what should I use? I could put them both in the next2me but imagine they'll hit the weight limit pretty quick. I don't want to waste money buying loads of extra things either.

Thanks

Could you just buy one extra cot bed. Use with side off as a large next to me for both. By the time they are ready to go in individual cots you could get single for eldest ( or single mattress on floor a few more months), and use his cot bed as second cot.

Use the next to me downstairs as somewhere in living room to but babies when you need them off the floor. Or if one is asleep and other crying in pram

Could you buy a second cot/cotbed for the twins to share initially. By the time they are too big to share maybe DC1 will be old enough to transition into a toddler bed?

We had both in a next to me, and then one in a next to me on each side of the bed. When they were tiny they slept in the pram during the day. Congratulations, twins are such fun.

Thanks all for the replies. Could you tell me roughly what age my son could go into a single bed? At the moment he's still using the cot bed as a cot, not yet a toddler bed. I just looked up that cot and it says it can be used up to age 5/6.

And any idea what age I would want to put the twins in separate cots? I was thinking that might be quite early, maybe when they go into their own room around 6m?

Well lots of children are in cot bed or single from 18 months onwards as climb out of cot.

You could take the side of the one you have and he carry on using for 3/4 years as toddler bed. But then you would need to have three of the same.
He could safely sleep on a mattress on the floor any time.
A single mattress on floor, then on single frame will give you longest time. Or you could by him a toddler bed which is same size as cot bed so would last again until 5 ish

I've also preg with twins and approx same timing as you re dc who will be 2. We have smaller cot bed, more like 3-4 max at the moment and have been given a toddler bed the same size. My plan is to buy another cot when the twins are about 3 months so they can have one each, by then dc will be nearly 2.5. Then perhaps another toddler bed in time but maybe they can stay in cot beds and go straight to beds. The friend who gave me the toddler bed said the guard rail is useful, which you generally don't get if you take the side off a cot bed so that seemed to make sense. Sure not imperative though. I think it depends what you're happy to spend. I don't want to buy anything unnecessary but at the same time it stresses me out to think of a room with loads of mismatched furniture, lol. Think that is just how my fear of the chaos is currently manifesting!

Ooo this is helpful as I’m expecting twins with a just over 3 year old at the time. I slept mine in the uppababy bassinet so was thinking two of those, cots when they grow out of them. Not sure whether they will want to sleep together or separate suppose it will depend on them. Will use Vista as double too

When visiting family I'd settle dc in a single bed and slip out, easily by age 2.

Thanks all. I think I'll go with buying 2 more cot beds, I might just pick some cheaper ones than the one my toddler is in at the moment. And at least we should get some longevity out of them vs buying stuff that can only be used for the first few months.

I'll use one cot bed for night time sleep, with the side off beside our bed. And keep the next2me downstairs for naps. If they outgrow it but I still want to keep them together, I could put the second cot downstairs for a bit.

But if I need to separate them for naps, I can always pull out the bassinet as well. And I'd have the second cot bed on hand for whenever we want to separate them for nighttime.

I think that's all bases covered!! 😀

Now I just have to figure everything else out 🤪
