Which cot or crib???

I am having twins, due July
My hardest choice is deciding what on earth they are supposed to sleep in from newborn and without having to buy loads of different ones as they get older. There's so many different ones around that I feel I need some recommendations for ones that are actually good

Have a look at Kelly E Bailey on Instagram and babycentre. She has a list of useful kit for twins including a twin crib. It was like a next to me only bigger and with a divider in the centre.

Following with interest. I think I'm going to end up putting mine straight into a cot together, and then will buy a second when I need one. Don't think I'll fit in the room with them when there's a second cot too so could have a problem later down the line if it's before 6 months (which I'm assuming it will be tbh!)

Definitely following with interest! I think my twins will be here late May/early June and I have NO idea about their sleeping arrangements. I have looked and looked, just can't seem to make my mind up on what is best and what is best for the space we currently have.

For the first couple of months my twins shared a cot at night and a Chico next to me during the day

I did buy another separate Moses basket but they preferred to be together

They are now on separate cots

I should also say mine shared an incubator/cot in NICU for 3 weeks and also the Twins trust does a leaflet on safe practice for twins to share a cot (had a big argument with my family as they said it wasn't recommended - pffft what do they know they never had twins and Twins trust said it was perfectly fine 😂)

Do you remember what sort of age they stopped sharing?

@ReeseWitherfork

I think it was around 5 months

You have 2 options basically

1 - one at either end so their heads are in the middle of the cot

2 - both with their feet against the long side (so horizontal in the cot)

Mine hated being opposite ends and when they could shuffle about just used to annoy each other by ending up banging heads

I also - due to space - purposely didn't buy the bigger cots which convert to a full toddler bed as with my eldest she didn't get much use out of the "bed" bit and went into a single bed - so my cots are smaller - they are the IKEA ones (I still wanted ones that the side could come off and be used as a bed just not as long)

Option 2 worked best for us - even though I'd leave a space in the middle they'd end up snuggled up next to each other 🥰

So for me it was when they were so tall that their heads then touched the other side of the cot and also when they just started annoying each other by moving a lot more in their sleep - I have one twin much bigger than the other and he needed more space - if he had been same size as his sister I'd probably have got another month out of the cot sharing

5 months for the cot

Less for the Chico next to me

It depends how mobile they become and when

Infertilitywarrior · 21/01/2022 12:55

There's so much to be aware of, I want to make sure they're safe but also would like them to sleep together for as long as possible and also not have to keep buying bigger cots/cribs as that just ends up expensive but its hard knowing what's the best for space and for them to be together xx

@Infertilitywarrior

Just be aware they may not want to be together 😂 as mine only had each other in NICU and shared there they were really bonded when we brought them home but as the months progressed it's obvious at times they get on each other's nerves - by 6 months they definitely didn't want to be sharing 😂

Infertilitywarrior · 21/01/2022 17:08

@bonetiredwithtwins thank you I'll bare that in mind and have a back up 🤣

I just found out I'm having twins too, likely August. Will be able to fit a next-to-me style crib in our bedroom but nothing bigger than that, so I think will just be seeing how long they last in there together (unless they hate sleeping with each other, in that case I guess 2 large moses baskets??)

Arpeggiator · 25/01/2022 20:09

Mine have shared a regular size cot since birth. Now at 6 months they sleep diagonally, with heads at opposite corners and toes meeting in the middle- in sleeping bags. I reckon I have another couple of weeks before they need to go in their own cots. We have one cot in the living room and one in the bedroom, and then soon we will move both cots into their room.
For us, we wanted to save on money and not have to buy anything else until they are 3 or so and go into beds.

The recommendation, as far as I am aware, is that once they are rolling they should be separated.
