Yams and multiple births

I recently found out that yams contain a follicle stimulating hormone that increases the chances of releasing multiple eggs at ovulation. That's why there is a higher incident of twins and higher order multiples amongst women of Afro-caribbean and African origin because they tend to eat a lot of yams. That is certainly the case in my family (Jamaican). Even so, I was still shocked when I found out 3 years ago that I was expecting twins!

Wow that is so interesting. To think a food could be responsible in any way for twins! I wonder if any other foods have that effect?

hmm, don't think I've ever eaten yams! I eat mogo, that is similar I think?

My obstetrician friend works in London and sees lots of African and Afro-caribbean women. If they are expecting twins etc, the first thing he asks them is if they eat yams!

black women are more likely to have twins than any other race too, though, I read that somewhere. I think it runs black, white, asian, eastern asian.
