Double bed for toddler twins?

Cabra82 · 23/05/2020 17:09

Thinking of transitioning my two year old toddler twins to a double bed. They currently sleep v well but they are in sleep suits and they are getting a bit big for them, they are tall for their age. Their bedroom is small so not much space for toddler beds so a double mattress made more sense to us. We plan to add a single bunk bed above later on when they are older. Does anyone have any experience in moving twins to a double bed?? What age did you do it? Thanks in advance.

The only issue I have found is getting nice duvets covers for them. 😂

@pinkglove75318. Would it not make sense to let them have a single duvet each and chose their own covers?

I have tried that. They usually end up snuggling under one and throwing the other on the floor. My gran has made a lovely double one for them now, which Works well.

If I'm reading it right, you are talking about a mattress on the floor? Just be careful to air the mattress properly if it's on the floor rather than a frame.

Why don't you just get one single bed for them to share, sleeping at either end? They'll certainly have plenty of room, and by the time they're big enough for bunks the single bed will probably be knackered anyway.

It's often referred to as a sibling bed if you wanted to Google for ideas. That brings up several articles and opinion pieces.

Hi @Cabra82
My girls are now almost 4 and sharing a small double. They went from sharing a cot bed size cot to a standard single bed sharing that from age 2-3. Just for a year though, as it quickly seemed too small for them to share since they are quite long and legs were starting to become a problem when top and tailing.
So from 3 till now they are in the bottom bunk of a triple sleeper which is a double- it might be a bit smaller than standard about 3ft I think.
They choose whether to side by side or top and tail, although i prefer them to top and tail unless very tired as they can keep each other awake more if too lively! They do sometimes love to be side by side though and I think they find comfort in it.

I dont really know what problem some other posters are seeing with sharing a double, maybe because they haven't taken the time to explain themselves Hmm Or maybe it was a slow day on aibu and thought they'd come over here for a quick jab. Pay no mind to unhelpful comments some people just live for their opportunity to have a go!

The only thing I would say is agree that you need to be careful about mattress directly on the floor as it can get damp and mouldy underneath if you dont air it out regularly, so I've read on cosleeping threads. Maybe a futon frame?

Thank you so much- this is really helpful, especially the damp issue so will make sure to air! Appreciate all the advice :)

We have two single beds but my 3yo b/g twins always want them pushed together so we’ve just kept them like that! Whatever gets you the best night’s sleep IMO!

Just wanted to update in case anyone was thinking of doing the same. Its been a week now and cant believe how well the girls have adapted to the double bed. The first nap was funny- they played for and hour and a half with new found freedom. I went in as little as possible- to tie the cupboard shut as they discovered how to open it, and if one cried but they were mainly playing and enjoying their independence! I took out the light bulbs (saw that somewhere). After 1.5 hours I used our baby camera mic and said- bedtime! Time for sleep! And both girls settled down to sleep for an hour! That evening, as it was nice and dark they didnt play too much- they chatted and moved around for 15 mins (which they would do in cribs anyway) and slept through 12 hours- amazing! Since then they have seemed to really enjoy sleeping together, we read in bed to settle them and they understand its time for bed. They have fallen out a few times but as it s on the floor not too far to fall. I ended up putting those inflatable bed guards under the sheet at side and end of the bed which has helped a lot. V happy so far seeing the girls enjoy their new big girls bed! Thanks for all the helpful comments :)
I would say a reliable bedtime routine (previously) helped them quickly settle Into their new bed.
