Twins measuring BIG!

Just had 32w scan with DCDA twins which are measuring a couple of weeks ahead! while I'm v pleased that they are growing well - as I know that the bigger the better in many ways - I'm now getting a bit scared about how I'm going to keep them in long enough for their lungs and brains to develop as much as possible.. 🤞
Speaking to the consultant they said that the size doesn't mean that they are any more developed that a smaller baby at 32w, but that as I'm not a huge person (5ft5 & about 9st when not pregnant!) that they could well come early. I just want them healthy & happy - they are about 5lbs (one a little less, one a little more) each already! My DS was 8lbs at 41w... so wasn't expecting these guys to be so big! Anyone else had big twins that were early?! Thanks x

Thanks Hobbes39 we are all doing well. Boy is called Alex and is a feeding champ, girl is Erin and she's a bit too small to breastfeed so using some formula for now til she's a bit stronger. Still in hospital, was hoping to go home today but it's very busy and no one has got round to us yet. Here's a pic of them snuggling

Aaaahhhh! How utterly gorgeous are they?! 😍 that's just such a lovely pic!
Hope they get round to seeing you soon so you can get home - that's fab they are doing so well - and don't worry about feeding - whatever works is best. They are utterly gorgeous & I love the names - Erin is one of my top ones for girls names, but DH prefers others, so will not get to use it - might try sneaking it in as a middle name tho!! X

Hobbes39 we are good thanks, babies are 1 week old (where did that week go!!) And things are quite chilled actually. Very much enjoying all the cuddles and my 2yo has been absolutely brilliant. Recovering from the csection well and feeling more normal every day.

2 weeks to go! Hope it doesn't drag too much and you're doing ok in the heat. Just to add that my two weighed very close to what the scan predicted the week before they were born.
Twin 1 was estimated 4lb15 at 35 weeks and was born 4lb14 at 36+3
Twin 2 estimated 5lb15 at 35 weeks and born 5lb 13.

Hi Hobbes39 how are you doing?

Hobbes39 · 11/09/2019 16:01

Hi! Meant to update you but couldn't find the thread - my babies are here! And were totally fine, no help required! 🥳
They were a good size not quite as enormous as they were measuring but - 6lb7 & 6lb9!
Born Monday morning at 37+2 - they are totally utterly gorgeous and I'm totally in love 💕 ! And I'm so delighted they are so healthy and so far reasonably happy - although they are SO hungry and my milk hasn't quite come in fully yet, so having to top up for now. How are you guys getting on? X

Thats amazing huge congratulations Hobbes39 and those are great weights. It's great that no help needed either. Have they got names yet? Hope you are recovering well.
We are doing well thanks. Twins are 3 weeks old now, it goes so fast! They have been pretty sleepy up until now so very little required other than feeding and changing. They didn't get on well with breastfeeding, I was having to top up with more and more formula due to them being so sleepy and wouldn't latch. I'm so utterly disappointed about it but they are doing well with formula now. I'll get over it in time but bottles just seems so unnatural to me and I'm beating myself up a bit.

Hobbes39 · 20/09/2019 03:06

Hi @boodles101 - how are you doing?
Don't beat yourself up about the feeding - it's hard with 1 baby let alone 2! We too are having some issues with feeding - my wee girl is great at breast feeding - latches on really easily and just gets on with it ...she's gaining weight well...
My wee boy however is not such a natural
and we are struggling with him - he's not too bad during the day, but night time feeds are so hard - he doesn't latch well, he's on and off, he falls asleep the minute he's had one suck, etc... and he's the one that needs the food most as he lost a bit too much of his birth weight and we are topping up with formula too. I suspect we will end up with one baby bottle fed and one breast fed - and I feel a bit weird about them having different things, but I keep reminding myself that fed is best, so we do what we have to! My boy also struggled to feed. He was 6lb3 at birth but got sick and was in SCBU for a week on a tube. It took him maybe a month to be able to feed as well as his sister. We used some formula but kept up the breastfeeding too and he did get it then we dropped formula altogether after a cutie if months (just because I had enough milk so no need for it). He's nearly 11 now and he's super clever, very sporty, just extremely talented!

Hobbes39 · 20/09/2019 08:20

Hi @MerryMarigold - that's interesting to hear - thanks!
My wee boy was 6lb7 when he was born, dropped to 5lbs11 but is now back up to 6lbs2, so the formula top up is working, it I do Susie the has 'nipple confusion' or something similar as he is getting worse at take breast feeds rather than better and I think it's probably cos bottles are so much easier he doesn't have to work at it at all, but breast feeding he does... so I worry that he will never get back to more Brest fed - but you e given me hope! One thing good about twins I guess is that I have a ready made pump in the form of his sister to keep my supply going until he gets the hang of it!

Maybe stick to bottles at night and keep persevering with breast in the day. I can't fully remember what I did, it's such a blur. My daughter was in hospital too with really bad bronchiolitis at about 3 weeks old. I just remember getting so frustrated with my baby boy once as he wouldn't latch but was screaming as hungry and I was screaming at him. Horrible. Anyway, it was all fine in the end and he did get it. I fed all my children with top up formula in the first month but it was top up ie. At least 80 per cent on the breast.

boodles101 · 22/09/2019 16:21

Hobbes39 glad to hear you are doing well. Well done for doing both, it's not easy at all. And sounds like they are both putting on weight nicely.
We are doing ok thanks, tired but you know how that is! I've got over the feeding now and don't let it upset me anymore. I think my boy has reflux so going to speak to GP tomorrow about that but otherwise they are both very good babies and are quite good to me.
