Stories of twins born 37+ and all ok..

Hi - I'm 16w with twins - I have a 5 year old DS who was born at 40+6 and relatively uncomplicated pregnancy (I had issues with low blood pressure and pelvic pain, but otherwise fine)... I am however scared about these babies. They are much longed for IVF babies, after multiple early miscarriages they are our little miracles as I've just turned 42, so we've experienced a lot of things going wrong and I'm still finding it hard to believe that things will be ok...
I'm really scared about them being premature and poorly, I just want our babies safe after all we have been through. Please can people tell me their positive twin stories of twins born around full term and without major issues so I can know it is possible. Also if anyone knows of anything I should be doing that could make a difference then please tell me! Thank you x

My DNiece and DNephew were born just shy of 34 weeks (also IVF babies after a first). They came of their own accord and one was almost 5lb and the other 6lb, so good weights.

They had around 2 weeks in special care but it was relatively uneventful and they are 6 now with no issues at all!

My two were born at 36 weeks- they weighed 5 1/2 pounds each. Apart from one having a bit of mild jaundice they were fit and healthy.

This was over 35 years ago - I had been in hospital for a month on enforced bed rest (boring as fuck but normal for then) and we were all sent home after the (normal for then) week in hospital.

I was absolutely enormous and was very glad when they arrived- after a normal labour and delivery.

Congratulations btw!Thanks

I'm a twin born at 34 weeks and was absolutely fine. No time in the nicu, and sent home three days later.

Woodenhillmum · 05/05/2019 19:18

I frightened myself about prematurity and all the possible problems when pregnant but you don't tend to hear all the positive experiences so this thread is great .I went into labour with my triplets at 32 weeks and had a caesarean .They stayed in the least intensive special care room for 4 weeks and then came home together .No health issues at all , other than needing tube feeding till they could suck ,steroid injections in my pregnancy had matured their lungs .Best wishes

Mine were born by planned csection (both breech) at 38.5 weeks! Both fine.

Hobbes39 · 05/05/2019 19:27

Thank you all for your positive stories - it definitely helps..! As @Woodenhillmum says, and as with life in general, you hear / read all the stories where things go wrong and where everything is fine people don't usually comment, so it can be frightening. My logical brain knows the above, but as I said in my original post, we are so used to things not going our way that it's easy to worry. I really appreciate you all taking the time to reassure me it is possible for it to all be fine! Thank you so much xx

Mine wouldn’t come out and had to be handed their eviction notice at 38 weeks. Grin 5lbs11oz and 6lbs2oz.

catoney · 06/07/2019 09:42

They told me they don't like twins going over 37 weeks. Mine were 37.5 induced but ended up having a section - induction didn't work at all and I wanted a section anyway but didn't have the balls to say until the very end. Was pressured to go naturally imo.

They were a perfect 6.5lbs and 7.2lbs.
No problems.
I lost blood and had a transfusion but was home 2 days later.

DorothyHarris · 17/07/2019 21:06

Dcda twins here born by planned section at 37.5, 6lb8 and 7lb 9...no issues with the dts whatsoever..I had a bit of a rough time (pph) but aside from the last we were find and home two days later. Also relatively easy pregnancy, no problems other than usual aches, pains heartburn etc

ToddlerTwinsAndUnhinged · 29/08/2019 18:21

My twins were born at 37+4 and were absolutely fine. One lost a bit too much weight (9%) after birth so was weighed every day for a week, but other than that, all good. They were both 6lbs at birth.
Try not to worry.
They're 11months now and thriving. They do my bloody head in and are such hard work, but they are healthy, happy girls xxx
Good luck with your pregnancy.

TheWashingFairyatemyhamster · 30/08/2019 22:20

My DCDA twins were induced at 37+4 weighing 6lb 1oz and 6lb 8oz. Vaginal birth with no intervention. Gave birth just before 4am and was sent home 36 hours later.

The birth was much less traumatic than the birth of my singleton three years before. I was given a side room and the midwives were very helpful and kind (unlike with DS1). They took to breastfeeding well, and honestly it was easier than my first time experience despite there being two of them!

A friend had her DCDA twins at well over 40 weeks (can’t remember how much after but think it was close to 42 weeks) . Had a home water birth. You very rarely hear about these very straightforward experiences but they do happen!

My twins are 6 now and bloody hilarious. Good luck and enjoy!

My sisters natural birth. Not sure exact wks but counted as term both fine both doctors now.

doodlejump1980 · 31/08/2019 22:32

How are you doing @Hobbes39?

Hobbes39 · 31/08/2019 23:14

Hi @doodlejump1980! I'm still pregnant - 36w now... can't actually believe I've made it this far, am delighted but SO exhausted and counting down the days!
I'm struggling to do much at all now, babies were measuring pretty big at our last scan (32w) - due another scan on Monday and then if they don't make an appearance before then I am booked on for c-section at 37+2. I can't wait to be honest, I'm desperate to meet my babies and to not be hulking this huge weight around!

Fantastic @Hobbes39 you’ve done brilliantly to get this far! Won’t be long until you get those amazing newborn cuddles. Will be thinking about you! Good luck!

Hobbes39 · 11/09/2019 05:19

Hi - just to update you - our little miracle babies were born on Monday morning at 37w2d and I'm delighted to say they didn't need any special care, they are healthy strong wee things and they've been straight on the ward with me!
The little girl was 3kg, little boy 2.9kg!
I'm in a fair bit of pain still from the section and I lost a fair amount of blood, so I'm a bit pale and tired, but over the moon with our beautiful babies finally being here!

Huge congratulations - wonderful news. Thanks

DorothyHarris · 11/09/2019 08:26

Congratulations! What lovely news xx

Littletabbyocelot · 17/09/2019 20:32

Congratulations, that's lovely news

newrubylane · 23/10/2019 13:01

Mine were born at 36+2 and no issues apart from a little trouble maintaining their temps for the first week, and mild jaundice. Now nearly 7 months and doing great. I know of three other people who also had twins around full term with no issues. Yes the risks are greater with twins, but you're still more than likely going to have a perfectly normal experience. I'm assuming as IVF babies they're DCDA as well, which is the safest type. Try not to stress - I know it's hard x

Xenia · 23/10/2019 13:17

Mine were born (naturally) at 40 weeks by the way. The NHS would have inducted them at 38 weeks but I wanted to wait until they were ready as did my private midwives so we monitored them really closely and I feel really glad they had those extra 2 weeks to put on weight and come out when they wanted to. They decided to come exactly on 40 weeks to the day - unlike their older 3 siblings who came a few days early.

They were 6 pounds 8 and 7 pounds 8 - non identical twin boys and they were 21 years old yesterday! Obviously at 39 weeks pregnant and still working full time I was huge at the front but quite well. I felt most ill in the first 3 months when I was much sicker than with the first 3.

By the way one of mine came so quickly he came at home (my midwives were both here at home - and we had a booked NHS hospital birth) but his twin did not want to come that day so we had to go to hospital in a different London borough (mine technically has no NHS maternity hospital) and he was born 7 hours later - again a normal vaginal birth although I had an epidural with that last one as no one had ever told me I would have two separate 7 hour + labours one for each twin on the same day. i had always thought one twin came out and then the other immediately. (These are non identicals so in their own sac etc) Even tha was fine and we came home form hospital the very same day - didn't even stay over night).

PowerslidePanda · 06/11/2019 21:13

This thread was started around the time I discovered I was pregnant with twins and I shared the OP's anxieties about the risks, so I read everyone's experiences with great interest. Now that my babies have arrived, I wanted to add my own positive story! My twin pregnancy was free of complications and in a number of ways, actually easier than my previous singleton pregnancy. I was really pleased to make it to 37 weeks and had an ELCS at that point. My girls weighed 4lb 8oz and 6lb (the 36 week growth scan was waaaaaay off!), but even though that meant twin A was officially low birth weight, she was absolutely fine - no NICU time needed for either of them.

Dartsplayer · 06/11/2019 21:23

Congratulations. My identical twins were born at 36+4. Vaginal delivery, just gas and air, no complications. Weights were 5lb and 5lb 2oz. I was almost 39. Best of luck with everything

PaddyF0dder · 06/11/2019 21:25

Our twins were born very slightly premature: 36 weeks. They’re now two and a half and are flourishing.

Birth was fine. They had one day in incubators but otherwise plain sailing. Good luck!
