Just had the twins shock!

Hi,

Had my 12 week scan today and got the twins surprise. I'm a little in shock - already have a toddler and only ever planned two children. There are flickers of excitement but at the moment it's mostly terror. Just googling and reassuring and scaring myself at the same time.

Two sacs and two placentas (dcda twins) are not necessarily non identical. 33% of dcda twins are identical. A friend of mine had so called non identical twins who, after genetic testing, are indeed identical!

littlesupersparks · 30/03/2015 20:50

I'm not particularly big - fundal height of 34 at 33 weeks I think. Both babies are measuring over 50% centile too. I feel much bigger than previous pregnancies but people are surprised when I say it's twins.

neversleep I remember the sonographer at my 12 week scan saying they're identical, then my consultant saying 1/3 of dcda are identical and how we won't know if they are or not until birth but the sonographer at the 20 week scan said they're definitely not so I'm bloody confused!

neversleepagain · 30/03/2015 21:17

Are you having dcda twins glitz?

fuctifino · 30/03/2015 21:22

I'm a twin.
My dm found out 6 weeks prior to our full term birth via an xray Shock after there was some confusion regarding heartbeats.
My df had the snip prior to our arrival Grin

I am in my mid 40's, hence not knowing we were twins. We were also good weights, 12lb 10oz combined.

Congratulations Smile

Don't worry about getting too big though. Just remember you're growing two humans, and your stomach gets so squished that you'll have no appetite towards the end and no space for any food anyway!! I'm usually a size 14, the day I was induced (37+6!) I had a 55" waist. 3 weeks later, I had lost 3 stone!! Best diet ever! ??

neversleep yes I am

fuctifino twin too here and one of us was hiding at the first scan Grin. I think I'd pass out if I found out at the second scan!!

Hi OP. Just wanted to wave. I had the twins sick yesterday. I'm only 7 weeks and was having a reassurance scan. I'm in shock. Also have another child age 2.5. Didn't plan for this.

neversleepagain · 31/03/2015 09:21

If they are b/b or g/g then you won't know until they are born and look obviously very different or if they are tested. I have one blonde and one brunette and they are obviously very different so we didn't bother with zygosity testing.

My friend with dcda identical girls never thought her girls were identical (everyone else did though) and zygosity testing shows they are are identical twins.

neversleepagain · 31/03/2015 09:22

It baffles me how HCP get this wrong! My consultant, who was fabulous, looked at me like I was crazy when I told him my dcda twins could be identical.

quesadillas · 31/03/2015 09:43

So now I've done some reading, I see that 80% of DCDA twins are non-identical and around 20% identical.

24 hours on and I'm still massively in shock. I barely slept last night there was so much churning around in my head. DH is much more settled about the idea I think. My honest feelings are that while I'm not devastated, I'm certainly not thrilled at the moment. I'm just unsure, scared and a little confused about it all. I know overall it's a happy but scary thing, but it's the way it was meant to be, and I'll get used to it eventually.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP hope you're gradually getting over the shock! I didn't plan for it either (who does?) and only ever wanted two children. I did wake this morning after my limited sleep and wonder if it had all been a dream!

With regards to finding out the sex of the twins. Luckily mine were in the optimum position and it was really clear. It just depends how they are positioned at the time. You will be having regular scans, so plenty of chances to find out.
