30 weeks - worried that they might arrive early...

Hiya everyone,

I am almost 30 weeks with dcda twins. I felt one of the heads go down on Sunday (to the extent that it feels like it's going to fall out & I am waddling when I walk!). I started having sharp pains around my cervix and bum that day.

I then started having more uncomfortable braxton hicks that evening but they stopped after a few hours, then came back in the night. This has carried on for a few nights, sometimes getting to every 15 minutes for an hour or so. Every time I start thinking I might need to call somemne, it stops!

On Thursday morning I woke up with a tiny amount in spotting mixed in with discharge. I phoned the midwife (hoping she would tell me not to worry & to stay at home!) but she sent me over to be checked, which I suppose is understandable. I was admitted for 24 hours. The monitor picked up a couple of the 'contractions' I was feeling but the Drs are quite happy that they are braxton hicks and are not worried.

My cervix is closed which is more good news. The consultant found that twin 1 has got it's head fully down which explains the pressure & decided to give me steroids just in case they do turn up in the next few weeks - although she stressed that there is no way of predicting whether this will happen or not! She also said that the head being engaged is not a prediction of labour on it's own. They couldn't do an FFN because of spotting.

So, I am at home with instructions to take things easy this weekend & am going back for another steroid injection today.

I know that no-one else can predict when they will arrive & I keep reminding myself that I could easily get to 37 weeks. The head feels SO low though, I don't know I'd this is normal for twins. My DS didn't engage until 40 weeks (and when he did, my waters went immediately!) and I don't think DD did at all (elective section) so I don't have anything to compare the feeling to.

Does anyone have a story to share with me please? The Dr said that babies born after 30 weeks generally do very well & that the steroids will make a really big difference if they come in the next couple of weeks. I am so scared at the idea of what it would be like to have babies in special care. I know it sounds pathetic (especially since so many people on these boards have been through it & at earlier gestation as well) but I just keep thinking that I wouldn't cope with being separated from my babies and that it is just the one thing I couldn't do.

You did well to get to 36 weeks and lovely weights.

Look after yourself and you will soon be with both your lovely little pink & blue bundles :)

Congratulations Festive, well done on getting to 36 weeks, exactly the same as myself and well done on getting through the birth. Now you can enjoy your little bundles.

Great weights :) What have you called them? Please keep us updated on how your little blue bundle gets on, it must be awful to not be able to be with him.

Oh congratulations Festive, 36 weeks is just fantastic, and lovely weights too.

My boy was on CPAP & ventilator for a while and he is now a 15 month whirlwind. Seriously - we went to stay with some friends whose baby is older, taller, and more mobile and they had to up the childproofing because DS is so active and into everything!

Good luck with the expressing, it is hard but so worth it. Don't be demoralised by the tiny amounts you get to start with, it will suddenly pick up. I had EMCS under GA as well and actually took Domperidone after a few weeks to bolster my supply, so there are options there, but if you've tried a little bf with your DD already you'll likely do just fine without it!

Ahhh congratulations, with my boys I had one with me and one in scbu and found that harder to deal with than our girls who were 7 weeks early and both in scbu.

Hope you get them home soon :-)
