Sleeping arrangements for newborn twins

Sorry if this has been done previously but would appreciate any tips from those who have already been through this!

I'm just wondering whether people would recommend getting two moses baskets for twins or whether you went straight for both twins sharing a cot/cotbed?

If you went for the latter, would you recommend a cot or a cotbed? I'm presuming we'll end up with two of whichever so I'm wondering what the advantages of one over the other are? Price-wise, two cots and then two junior beds seem comparable to two cotbeds so are there are non-cost advantages/disadvantages to either cots or cotbeds?

Thank you...

Hi Teds. I have 8.5 month old twin girls. We had moses baskets which were on a twin rocking stand. We kept the girls in the living room during the day and then moved them in to our bedroom at night. We got 7 months use out of them which is quite a lot but then my girls were tiny. We probably kept them in with us for longer than necessary but the smaller one Twin 2 had issues and we just wanted to keep them in with us to keep a close eye on them. We then bought two cotbeds which they are now in. They now have plenty of space. They were more exspensive but you are supposed to get about 4 years out of them so hopefully it will be money well spent in the long run.

I was just having a nosey but on the cotbed discussion, my dd has a cotbed (handed down from her big brother so we have had lots of use from it), she has turned 4 and is still in it. There is probably still another foot of length at her feet (well, if I would remove all the teddies there would be....) and so I def think they are worth it. Plus as they are smaller than single beds it does give a fair bit more room in the bedroom for a while. HTH

teds as you know my twins aren't here yet but plan to use 1 cot at night, also have 2 bouncy chairs and a travel cot for day x

We got small cribs for nursery, they're on wheels so could be easily moved between our room and nursery (as I used to sleep in nursery with them on bad nights but in our room normally). They used to share one crib until about 4-5 weeks then went in own crib. Think they'll last to about 12 months.

Never bothered with Moses baskets, and used a travel cot for downstairs (which they shared until last week as DTS has started rolling onto his sister during naps)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I guess we're pretty spoilt for space as the twins' room already has a kings size bed in it and could fit two cotbeds - though this would be a bit of a squeeze. We can sleep with them in there as long as we're needed and then when we move out we can always take out the kings size bed/switch for a small double or single sort-of-thing if one of us needs to sleep in there occasionally. There will be loads of room for two single beds in the future if they stay sharing.

I guess I'm just not sure if moses baskets are worth it or would they actually prefer the cosiness in the early days? And I'm not sure if cotbeds win out over cots! I just need to make a decision before they actually arrive Grin

Hello - I wanted a sidecar cot but it wouldn't fit so we went for 2 moses baskets in our room for 4 months. We bought two cotbeds at the same time and had one in the nursery and one downstairs. They (sometimes) shared these for naps (DT2 normally napped in my arms).

Then they shared a cot bed for a couple of months and now both cot beds are upstairs and they nap and sleep separately. Actually DT2 mostly sleeps in our bed but that's a whole other thread!

I liked the moses baskets in our room as we couldn't get the cot bed in there and we wanted them with us for as long as possible. IMO Its definitely worth having somewhere upstairs and downstairs for napping and as DT2 was a screamer I even used a sheepskin when his brother was safely asleep so I didn't disturb him.

A lot depends on your layout and how well they sleep together so most people I know have done something slightly different.

Good luck
