Nap / sleep training for 5 month twins - how???

How on earth do I start this. I'm spending up to an hour and a half trying to get my two to sleep during the day, and am exhausted. My health visitor suggests putting them down to sleep... Easy to say, but when both are screaming, how do you get out of the cycle?
They have never "just" gone to sleep, and if I manage to get one asleep, the other on invariable wakes them up.
I'm at the end of my tether. If I put them in different rooms, one is screaming on their own. I generally try to get them to sleep in their own cots, but have resorted to pushing the pram round the village. It gets them to sleep, but doesn't solve the problem, and means I don't get to sit down for five minutes to eat.
I need practical suggestions on helping them to sleep, please share your ideas?

I've just been through this with my 2nd set of twins and I'm afraid at 10.5 months I had to do the tough love of controlled crying. One night I had no more energy to get up to them and they weren't hysterically crying but as soon as I opened the door they stopped. It took one night of not much sleep but since then they are going 12 hours a night.

Hat off to you HGJ with 2x2 !
Did you do them both at the same time, or work with one and then the other? Once you had the night timw sorted, did it just work ok for naps, or do you have to start again for a daytime sleep?

Wow 2 sets of twins another hat off to you hgj.

Down on the farm will they settle in swinging chairs ?
How do they sleep at night ?

Hi Farm, I'm with you on this, my 5 month olds will only settle in the pram. Right now I've taken the wimps option & now push them round the block over and over again. That way when they are both asleep I leg it back to the house, leave the pram in the hallway and then I've got usually at least 30 minutes to myself. I used to do mammoth walks but realised once they are asleep they don't need movement. It works for me, probably not long term but for now it will do the job. At least I eat nowadays! Good luck, hope you have a better day today.

haha Rets and Farm i do the same thing! ...... whatever it takes to survive eh?! they are sleeping in the hall right now, means i get to have lunch and a cup of tea in peace! they nap in cot in morning and go down in cot at night at 7 no problem so i just let them nap in the buggy for now.

Retsbewdy · 04/04/2012 21:42

twinnies I love it! We're the same, first nap of the day is relatively easy done & in their chairs, and at 7 they go in their cots, sometimes still awake, and fall asleep themselves no bother without crying. Thank goodness for the drought, doing the block tramp 3 times a day in the rain would force me to rethink my strategy!

Never really did it, just fed them to sleep or took them out for a walk in the buggy which worked brilliantly. Later on they went down for a nap themselves without having to do CC, was after 6 mths I think

id have to agree with hgj toughlove i tried everthing to get mine to sleep walking with them in pram driving around at 12 at night but nothing seemed to work its not for everyone but worth a try.good luck it will get better.
