dtds are 5 monthd and haven't been too bad sleepwise until the last 2 weeks. Now they are waking throughout the night, waking each other etc so we decided to stop putting them down in a cotbed together and now one is in their nursery with me or dh on the futon and the other is in our bed room. The one with dh settles when she wakes but the one with me feeds constantly (I guess she smells my milk). How do I get them sleeping? Here is our night...

bottle and bed 8pm
11.30 - bottle (we dropped this last week as they didn't seem interested)
1am wake feed and keep waking and feeding until 6am, finally fall asleep properly. dtd with dh usually wakes at this time for feed then at 7am I'm up for dd1 who's 3.

I know this isn't right but I'm too tired to see clearly how to sort it! :(

Can you not put them both in the nursery (in separate cots)? I know official guidelines are not to be own room until 6 months but we had to move ours out when they were about 4 months as they were disturbing each other and no room for two cots in our room. They've slept really well since. Are they in sleeping bags?

We're putting them in seperate rooms as they wake each other crying. We are still sleeping in the room with them as my twin sister died of cot death so I'm terrified that if anything happened and I hadn't followed guidelines I'd never forgive myself.

They are in sleeping bags.

Oh gosh. So sorry about your twin sister. How awful.

I was going to suggest that they sound like they're hungry and may be ready to wean. However, if you're following guidelines, I expect you'll wait until 6 months.

All my DDs started to wake more frequently around 5 months - weaning certainly helped.

Do they eat well in the day? Are they teething? Growth spurt?

MamaChocoholic · 06/02/2012 22:11

There's a sleep regression around 5 months. It's hell. Sorry. Weaning didn't help ours though, I'm afraid.

But you will get through it. Have you tried co sleeping with the one you're with? It was the only way I survived this time (and I feel your pain having to get up for a 3 year old too). There are guidelines somewhere on safe cosleeping and studies have shown it's no riskier than a cot provided you follow them. It does mean you get more sleep. I doubt a futon mattress is firm enough though. I have a normal mattress on the floor, which means I don't worry about rolling off.

PrincessScrumpy · 06/02/2012 22:28

To be honest, by about 3.30am we are co-sleeping which is why the baby with me then feeds all night.

We have begun weaning as the BLISS guidelines say from 5 months with prem babies (if they can hold their heads up and will take it). I think it's a combination of teething, colds, and constipation (won't be trying bannana again for a while!), and the fact dh was in hospital so I had 3 nights of doing it all myself.

Everyone at baby group is going on about their babies sleeping - it drives me mad. dd1 didn't sleep for 4 months but then slept brilliantly so I think we thought we were home and dry. Just want to be able to enjoy them.

So sorry about your sister and totally understand why you're following the guidelines.

Don't really have any advice but it hope it gets better for you soon.

How prem were your Dts? Mine were 10 weeks and makes it so hard to work out appropriate sleep/eating expectations. (no sleep here either! Dtd 'got it' last week, then we mucked it up over the weekend!)

PrincessScrumpy · 07/02/2012 18:42

They were only 4 weeks prem.

So this could be the 4 month sleep regression?

I plan on using that as a mental excuse at actual, corrected, and all ages in between!
