Parents of twins, can I ask a few questions?

Hi
DH and I will be having IVF in a couple of months. As I am relatively young, there is a slightly higher chance of the IVF being successful, which is great obviously, however this means that when it comes to embryo transfer they may recommend me for single embryo transfer. Before all this, DH and I have to think about whether we will be happy with SET or whether we would prefer to have two embryos transferred, which obviously brings with it a higher chance of multiple births.

We're busy discussing positives and negatives of both, health and change of succes -wise but there's a few little practicalities I'd like more info on.

If you have twins would you be so kind as to tell me:
a. What pushchair you have/had?
b. What car you have?
c. How many big is your house (how many bedrooms)

They're just little questions lurking at the back of my mind Grin

Jane power twin pro (was a gift and very good but I wanted a jogger, but it wouldn't fit through our front door)
Citroen zsara picasso
Two but we've since moved to a bigger one, we have an older child.

I bought the car seats when they were on offer and stored them, I buy things through Kid Start to save money for them all.

here

a) Out'n'about 360
b) Vauxhall Zafira ( 2 x maxi cosi Isofix carseats, dd1 (3) in the bact one side, double buggy other side)
c) 3 bedrooms

thingamajig · 19/11/2011 21:49

To cost these (which is what I assume you will do with this info) use a price comparison website - prices and offers vary wildly)

Byeckerslike · 19/11/2011 21:51

Out and about 360 here too
Volkswagen Touran
3 bedrooms (we have an older ds too but twins are also boys so will share)

LaVitaBellissima · 19/11/2011 21:59

a) I candy peach blossom (so expensive, brilliant but I think I got a bit swept away with it all, even the footmuffs are £85 each Sad)
b) Audi A4
c) 3 bedrooms (1 we use as an office though with day beds for guests)

Twins are fab though and you can do things cheaply/cheaper on certain things. If you do have twins, mine shared 1 cot bed for the first 3.5 months (cot beds last up to age 5 so are better value for money long term) we didn't buy moses baskets, if they slept downstairs in the day we just used the carrycots from the prams.

Good luck anyway

kim111 · 20/11/2011 22:27

a. Out 'n' About 360
b. Ford C Max
c. 3 bedrooms

GibberingGinger · 20/11/2011 22:39

b. Fiat Ulysses. it's shit, hate it
c. 4 very small bedrooms. us in 1st, dd1 in 2nd, DTs in 3rd, computer,
spare bed and clutter in 4th.

EvilTwins · 20/11/2011 22:45

a. Mothercare massive twin thingy (old - don't go there. Buggies were rubbish when I had my twins)
b. Seat Ibiza (3 door) - thought we'd have to change to a bigger car, but we never did.
c. 4 bedroom, though the DTDs are 5 now and still share.

Twins are fabulous. Hope the IVF goes well for you.

ColourMeWithChaos · 20/11/2011 23:00

a. Mothercare massive double buggy (if I was choosing now would be the Out 'n' about 360 nipper double)
b. Chevrolet Tahoe (I have 4 other kids apart from the twins and one on the way)
c. 8 bedrooms (see above) (and we inherited from DH's grandparents as he is the oldest)

fourunderfive · 21/11/2011 01:07

Out n about nipper 360
Citroën C4 Picasso
3 small bedrooms

We had to upgrade our car just to fit the buggy in the boot. Even now the buggy gets stored in the car because it can only just scrape through our front door and doesn't fold down particularly small so there is no room for it in our hallway. It is too wide for the doors of most local shops. Although it is super easy to drive.

6 week old boy & girl twins here....haven't posted before but you can't beat a survey!

Jane Power Twin - got it off Ebay for £120 - good but will bin it off when they hit 6 months-ish
Ford C Max - love it
2 bedrooms - bought a house last year never thinking we'd have twins, whoopsie!

Hi Fatima, I saw your post and wanted to just wish you loads and loads of luck with the IVF.

I remember so clearly being in your shoes and having the same discussion with my DH before we started our first cycle of ICSI and what we should do. It was an enormously hard decision and initially my DH was very against the idea of having 2 put back. However, when we looked at the statistics, we decided that the odds were so much better of having a baby if 2 were transferred than just 1, that it was madness not to. We read a lot of the bumpf they gave us and actually it really irritated me that they were trying to persuade people against a double transfer by comparing 2 cycles (1 fresh emby, 1 frozen) of SET with a single cycle of 2 fresh embys and the similar success rates (when actually there was still something like 15% better odds with a double and of course the cost of just 1 cycle compared with 2!!!!). We understood the health risks involved with a multiple pregnancy and why they now try to encourage SET but for us, we just wanted to increase our odds as much as possible. We were going private and didn't have limitless supplies of cash for several cycles.

We signed our forms agreeing to 2 embys and on the day of transfer they again discussed the increased risk of a multiple as I am 29 and it appeared that our main issue was male factor infertility, but we decided to go for it. I'm glad we did because 2 weeks later we found out the treatment had worked when we got 2 little lines on our HPT!

I am now 28 weeks pregnant with two little boys and am so very very happy. We didn't expect to be so lucky and I didn't even buy an HPT until the night before we were due to test - I just assumed I would start to bleed and the dream would be over, but it worked for us. I don't regret having 2 put back. Yes I'm the size of a house (most people I meet say they never had a bump this big when they were full term with their singleton!!) but I've been blessed so far with an extremely easy pregnancy. I was nauseous for the first 14 weeks but I was never actually sick (and symptoms started 3 days before our HPT when I got 2 migraines having never suffered from them before) and I have been extremely tired - physically I find everything difficult now, but everyone has different pregnancies. Just because you might have multiples does not mean that you will have a horrific pregnancy or that symptoms will be a hundred times worse. Lots and lots of my friends had a much rougher first trimester than I had.

We made the mistake of tempting fate and replacing my Fiat Grande Punto with a Nissan Juke just a week before doing our HPT which though a 5 door car, has a teeny boot. This somewhat limited our choice of travel system but we are able to get the iCandy Peach Blossom chassis and one of the carrycots in the boot (the other will just have to sit in the front passenger seat). I'm sure the 2 regular seat units will fit with the chassis in the boot when the time comes too. We assume that like most parents we'll probably progress to a smaller (unbrella fold) buggy at some point in the first year anyway, which will easily fit behind the front seats on the floor, so not a big worry. Unless you have a sports car or a convertible with a glovebox sized boot, I think you'll probably manage. However, our boys haven't arrived yet so I can't speak with much authority yet!! We also live in a 3 bed bungalow (though 1 of the rooms is teeny and a general dumping ground!) and the second bedroom isn't that big but will have to do for now.

Sorry for the rather long post! Lots and lots of luck with your treatment, I hope it's a success for you - I had weekly acupuncture and reflexology before, during and after treatment which I firmly believe really helped. (especially the reflexology, which I even had the afternoon after ET) If you can afford it, or can negotiate a good price, find a proper reflexologist (rather than one in a beauty salon) and give it a go. By all means PM me if you need any further info or advice Smile
